It was just one guy at EA saying that "there's more room to innovate in the online space, so you'll probably won't see many without an online component anymore," and then there wasn't any downtick in single player at all. Hell, it was actually more common for multiplayer features instead to be removed in the years that followed, as more publishers felt there wasn't a point in competing with the small handful of evergreen multiplayer games.
