Can spectacle, music, non gameplay related things carry a game with OK gameplay?

Pic related (except the puzzles)
>>
Yes.
Nier Replicant and Prototype come to mind

It's a very nice thing to get right but you need at least passable gameplay. I feel Dragon's Dogma failed this with how the leveling works and what enemies you can fight. Is the enemy just spongy by design or are in an area where you shouldn't be yet? Impossible to know. That Moria game is in the other end of that spectrum where it nags at you constantly if you are using weak weapons against strong foes.

This is quite literally AAA games in a nutshell, the gameplay is more like the filler between the spectacle. And yes it can be fun on occasion, but it should be recognized for what it is

Western AAA games have shit gameplay, shit story and shit spectacle because they're all boring open world slop

God of War has good gameplay though. At the time it came out it literally did everything what a good action-adventure title could achieve. It combined a good combat system with platforming and light puzzle elements. Play it on higher difficulties and you'll have to take advantage of everything the game offers you. It's your own fault if all you learned was spamming the square square triangle combo.
