I know no one gives a shit about nu-Halo lore, and they’re right to not give a shit about it because it’s fucking stupid, but I’m kinda angry that they made Let ‘Volir, the Shipmaster from Halo Wars 2, a sort of vehement leader of the Banished. I always found that character so fascinating. He was a disillusioned captain serving a Covenant splinter faction, mostly because he had nothing else to live for except his crew. Then Atriox came out of nowhere and forced Volir at gunpoint to serve him in exchange for patronage. The crew then essentially became a band of mercenaries working under contract for Atriox. Even the Honor Guard Hero Unit has lines bemoaning how the ship and its Elites have been reduced to mere mercenaries working for a Brute warlord. I generally always liked the Shipmaster. He has this really cool guerrilla warfare style going on which perfectly fits how his crew is made up of a ragtag of disillusioned veterans, and the Honor Guard in particular is really cool even if he requires a lot of micromanagement and excels more at stealth and surprise attacks than upfront combat, which again perfectly suits Elites. The Shipmaster was described as an unwilling right hand man to Atriox who only served him out of duty to his own Elites, not because he actually respected Atriox. And I always thought about how cool it would be if the Shipmaster eventually defected from Atriox and betrayed him or at least just ran off on his own. But instead 343i just decided the Shipmaster randomly becomes extremely loyal to Atriox and a diehard believe in the Banished. What a wasted opportunity. Speaking of Elites and wasted opportunities, I’m also angry we’ll probably never see that Jega Whatever Elite from Halo Infinite. He was like the single only good thing about Halo Infinite.
