The custom content is legitimately pretty good, though some of the custom dungeons are hilariously half-baked. That being said, Kara40 and Timbermaw Hold are some of the worst designed raids I've ever experienced anywhere. Requiring a minimum of 8k+ gold per raid for 40 people with Mythic+ tier mechanics and resistance/consume checks on a baby funserver where the player skill, class mechanics, and raiding culture does not facilitate this what so ever is genuinely retarded.
Not sure what Shenna is going to do now to afford rent.

Not only they actively hated certain classes/specs, they made sure to keep their favorites on top of all aspects of the game. The PvP was the worst shit ever. Base 1.12 is a paragon of fun and balance in comparison.

I didn't play Turtle for long because I was generally unimpressed with the custom quests and dungeon additions, but I definitely liked the profession improvements. It was nice training Blacksmithing while I was leveling and actually being able to make gear that was actually worth the time and effort

Playable tauren, trolls, Forsaken and gnomes are also a vanishing fraction of specific groups (the Darkspear are one tribe that was on the brink of extinction, gnomes are the refugee survivors of a near-total annihilation, the tauren were about to be genocided, the Forsaken are just the minority fraction of undead from one kingdom that were able to regain their minds). Even orcs and humans should be on shaky footing. Stormwind humans are recently recovered from being wiped out and the fragments of other nations are scattered. Orcs are just the few survivors Thrall managed to gather and sail away with, and the actual bulk of the old Horde are enemy factions in the Eastern Kingdoms like the Blackrock and Dragonmaw. It's really just dwarves, night elves, and (on Turtle WoW) goblins that should have solid, stable populations, and even then there's caveats like night elves already being low pop and losing their immortality and playable goblins being a specific, niche group.

There are some new dungeons, new leveling zones and new areas in preexisting dungeons. You can group with players of the opposite faction and pvp is turned off by default but you can turn it on and get a 20% boost to xp gained as a reward for taking the risk of opening yourself up to attacks. There's also new races, goblins for the Horde and high elves for the Alliance, and new class-race combos (Shaman and Paladin are still faction exclusive like in vanilla).

The main appeal is the leveling changes. Each zone has a number of new quests and new areas within the zone. There are also many new zones to level in. Many dungeons have new areas added to them as well.
Stromwrought Keep in Balor is probably my favorite dungeon ever made.

I'd say that the end game is the most similar but in the past 1 year they have added a lot more content for it. I never bothered with end game but the leveling was fun.

Nost was like a scene group practically, as far as I understand. They were reverse-engineering proper stats for mobs by watching old videos of vanilla WoW and timing the likely DPS range of the caster and/or reading tick damages. So for sure a lot of love and technical ability went into it compared to any of the more cynical options that were really just cults of personality or grifts.

They made it so any tavern gives you rested speed like tents, so players actually chill at taverns instead of being hobos in front of Orgrimmar. Actually a great change, dude is just assblasted he cant grind at 2x speed after begging people for a tent for 10 mins
Tents still exist, mind you. You can use them for the first 25% exp boost. So the idea is
Chill in Tavern, get 100% rested boost at 1.5x speed. Then if you run out of rest while out in the world and you dont want to go back to a tavern, you make a tent to get you to 25% rested and repeat at will or go to a tavern.
It's actually a great change, just in time for the server to be kill

C&D's have usually lead to voluntary shut downs, the only legal battle Blizzard actually won where the server had to shut down was WoWscape around 15 years ago.

With Turtle, the private settlement means there is a good chance Blizzard paid them off to close down the server. It's easy to fuck the one Turtle staff member in US (Akalix) but legal bills from chasing down the devs in EU plus hoping those courts would actually follow up on it would be a costly and time consuming pain in the ass for Blizzard. On top of that a few of them are out of reach in Russia, Israel, China etc.

It's probably just easier to reach a cash settlement ASAP before Blizzard likely launch their own Classic+ project late this year. It's a little bit similar to Nintendo just paying off the Ryujinx devs to stop working on the project since Emulation isn't illegal so the court battles could just be a costly drag on with Nintendo eventually losing. (even Sony lost an emulation court case years ago)

I barely ever play Turtle WoW anymore but it has been nice to have a max level char with decent gear with whom I can do some PvP every now and then. I will miss that. Committing to the game in the same way as I used to is off the cards but having the option of some casual PvP has been good...

Same dev also made a (notoriously buggy) quest where you show a high elf orphan around Stormwind that you then get as a follower upon completing it. It existed for no other reason than that he wanted an elf loli to follow him around. Needless to say that quest is no longer in the game.

I played some of it. Was alright. Other players weren't too obnoxious.

The additional content wasn't really anything though. There was a furbolg dungeon that had far too much trash and I didn't notice any boss mechanics, and another dark iron instance with far too much trash and I didn't notice any boss mechanics, and noone actually wanted to do any of the other stuff so I didn't get to play any of it. I played a holy priest but the only difference there was from playing it in normal classic was some tiny buffs you could put on the tank. And I guess other races also got fear ward, but I played a dwarf anyway.

So it was fine. But basically just the same as any other vanilla private server.

The leveling was definitely faster with the added xp mods like always-on pvp mode and ability to charge resting xp up. Also maybe farming gold was faster too since I had no problems getting epic mounts and the custom build switching item (goblin brainwashing device?) I needed for my priest to switch between shadow and a healing build compared to when I played in 2005 when it took months to get gold for a mount, but maybe that's just because I was able to farm a lot of stuff people would pay good money for that no one would back then.

Strangely a fun time, I walked in expecting the worst from the usual meme images about anime avatars and what not but it was actually quite the opposite.
The custom content is a mixed bag for me however, some of it is great like Northwind and others not so much. Same goes for the quests really.
The playerbase is like a weird form of autism that you don't really see anymore. Last time I checked anyway, world chat is bordering on /pol/ most of the time and the groups and guild I was in was along the same mentality. My biggest gripe is all the third worlders but it was more like difficulties with communications if you ever had to deal with them, except for the Russians I guess.
