Progress in this game is armory access, permanent shell upgrades, and the absolute most important thing which is getting better at playing the game. The gear comes naturally as your skills improve, and eventually losing a purple shield or a snazzy gun is no longer scary because you can just get them again. Being killed and losing gear is not a loss of progress because that isn't the point of what you're doing anyway. You can jump into a solo with nothing but a knife and come out with a hoard. That's the drama and the appeal of it for me. If I think back to playing games like Quake and Unreal Tournament and Counter Strike way back it was the same. The only real payoff is improving your skills. Everything else is disposable. Perhaps that format is just hard for people to accept these days but I still like it.
