Is it just me or has every game become MMO-ified? Feels like every game, single-player or multi-player, features cooldowns on abilities, damage numbers, needing "spec" into a "build". Why is it so hard for action games to be action games?

what's wrong anon? is the metaprogression dopamine from seeing number go bigger for 1000 hours losing its effect?

Because you're playing ARPGs and not action games? I'd say that some ARPGs are less 'gamey' than action games, they allow you to connect to your character and the world on a deeper level than a typical action game.
