It was the creepypasta of its time, and technically it's an adventure exploration game. Some of the fangames take the idea further, also Madotsuki is hot.

You can be a "fan" of it without actually engaging with it because it has no gameplay and is all just "vibes" shit. That's what people like about it. They like not actually having to think about it. They like not having to put actual effort into formulating opinions about it beyond extremely vague, borderline meaningless crap that they just expect others will magically understand. It is a puddle one inch deep that people gaze into for hours until they've deluded themselves into believing that it is a mile deep.
That is the appeal of it. A "game" for people who want to feel like they have something to say about games without actually having to play games or think manually.

I play the most hardcore pvp games regularly and enjoy sometimes chilling by exploring Yume Nikki and these days mostly 2kki, the later especially has a lot of zen areas to reach.

doubt it

It's the kind of game you play to wind down when you don't feel like trying hard anymore during the day. Yume Nikki and other fangames are best played blind but they get boring after you know everything, 2kki is sort of a live service (as much as I hate to say it) with how often it gets new maps and how huge it is.

All right, dude.

beating yume nikki without looking up a walkthrough or getting hints is far more difficult than completing 99% of games posted on /v/.

The game is technically a labyrinthian collectathon game, the main objective is finding the effects, and some of those also open up new paths or interactions in some of the worlds.

It got popular during the era of the internet when nerd culture was a little more pure. The novelty of an artsy walking simulator, made by some dude online who only seemed to make it for himself was something to spark your imagination at. Then most pople moved on, leaving too much room for secondaries and trannies to swarm in and do their usual bullshit.
Now we have a retarded plethora of fangames not made with any true love or passion, YNO for all the secondaries who need a chatroom for their supposed games about isolation and loneliness, and endless waves of "gobou carrying the fandom on his back" comments every fucking time he uploads.

tl;dr: You had to be there.
