>finish brood war>decide to jump right into sc2>standard no build tutorial mission fine, one base babymode macro mission, sure its just teaching the scrubs>snoozefest bunker defence mission, I guess its a callback to the awful third mission of sc1 that was basically the same>surely we're done with the shit tutorials now right>next mission is another one base spam marines and win mission, then the mission after is a spam marines and spend 30 minutes escorting peopleAm I missing something? when does it get good?
It's been 15 years since I played, but what I took away from it was the campaign really feels like a tutorial the whole way through. it's so scripted and handholdy. It's enjoyable enough, though.I remember really liking a night / day battle against swarms of zerg and one where lava goes up and down, but didn't retain much from it.
It doesn't. Most of the campaign is just dumb gimmick missions where you don't really get to play the game. You have lots of units that aren't even available in real games, either. I'm sure there are fan campaigns with actual good gameplay but the default one is just for the spectacle.
Even the story and writing is shit compared to SC1/BW.
Oh, get used to it. Every mission is like that, a gimmick fest that shows off a unit, and if you use that unit, the mission becomes baby tier. But it's still the best out of the three campaigns, because the other 2 are even worse.>zerg is just a glorifed MOBA where you use kerrigan like a DOTA2 hero but she's unkillable, so she can solo most missions>protoss is the same, but also really culminates in the absolutely atrocious writing
I BRING TIIIDIIIINNNGGGSS OF DOOOOOOM
>>736956709Brood war was rather shit too, original sc was good. Brood war didn't add anything really
>>736956256CnC is better anyway. Firestorm and Kane's Wrath are both kino, and Yuri's Revenge is the peak of the genre.
>>736956709dude starcrafts plot was literally just dood corruption the sequel
Just get through it for your boy Tychus and don't touch anything after that.
>>736956378We also got the really fun escort the Titan mission and then the followup Fuck Up 2/3 Bases With Titain mission.I don't think single player RTS campaigns are the place to be challenged they should just aim to be fun.
>>736956256The wings of liberty campaign is all about spamming the one unit they introduce in that mission. All the way until the final levels on Char. The thing is that the SC2 campaign peaks there. The Zerg and Protoss campaigns are that bad. Zerg feels like playing Diablo 2 (Kerrigan can solo every level) while Protoss is mostly about spamming Spear of Adun abilities than actually building units.
>>736956256Marines are just too strong
>>736957102but at least sc1 wasn't insufferable like sc2 is unless you play it only for the gameplay and skip all dialogue and story (can you even do that? i don't remember)
>sc1 mission>literally just a skirmish battle against the AI but it gets to start with a fully built base>you just turtle until you make a deathball and then you just winIs that supposed to be better?
>>736956256SC2's campaign missions are more "gimmick" based than BW. If you're looking for the more standard style BW missions of "macro up, build a big army, and then throw your big army at their army", then you're mostly going to be disappointed. It all depends on what you're looking for. A lot of people enjoy the missions of SC2 centering around some new, different gimmick for each mission. It's the story of SC2 that most people hate (myself included), but people tend to enjoy the actual missions. If you want something more traditional, you're better off just hopping online and playing real people
>>736958350going from 1 to 2 you might assume a few things (let's ignore the 12 year gap)
Nearly every mission is "spam the unit you just got to win." Only a few really feel like they do more than that. This is applicable even on harder difficulties.
>>736956256Play on Brutal and go for all achievements at the same time within the same mission. Now you're playing as the devs intended with a strict time limit on every mission and required to complete all side objectives as well.
>>736956256im in the same boat>replayed sc1 + bw, completed it 2 days ago>went right into sc2 now I found out I somehow got HoTS & LoTV for free (I only ever bought WoL and uninstalled after a few hours)SC2 WoL on hard isn't difficult at all. Only a couple missions I had to restart once or twice. The last mission "All in" is hard though that requires optimized macro and a bit of micro.Oh and the story is ultra shit. Characters are now marvel superheroes shooting magic balls of power at their enemies.I miss the atmosphere, story themes (and limiitations), and overall feel of SC1. I find the sound effects in 1 to be superior and more iconic. For example the standard terran marine rifle sound effect in SC1 is powerful, iconic, gritty. In SC2 it sounds like popcorn popping in a microwave and it just sounds so weak. I also dislike the new terran unit designs with the mechs and hover tanks. It's generic as fuck. Also all the unit and building models have this bubbly roundedness to them that I find cartoony.. There's no hard edges anywhere.
>>736958350I just recently played through the entire sc1 & bw campaigns and this is mostly true with exceptions. That one zerg mission where you have 20 minutes to blow a whole protoss base was really fun. I failed it a few times and refused to look up a guide. Eventually I found out the terran bases in the corners were weakly defended so on a fresh restart I used optimized building/upgrading to kill their bases fast, start up resource hatcheries for their minerals/gas, then used 5-10 mins to build up a giant army. Really made you feel like a swarm lord.
