You're never forced to use the same 3/4 party members and instead of gaming it you can restrict yourself into giving everyone psuedo-jobs.The mateira system allows for this quite overtly. Last time I played 6 I only allowed each character to have 2 Espers and carved out small niches for everyone based on their default jobs and stats. It was f-n.
