Because it's a hardcore PvP-focused extraction shooter. It's even less forgiving than Tarkov.

At least in Tarkov you can more-or-less sneak around, extraction is usually at the edges of the map, you can use Insurance to retrieve items you've lost, etc... You can sneak in, do some quests, and sneak out, without being forced to fend off fifteen players who are functionally walking tanks. Taking risks is usually optional. You can fight other players for their stuff if you want to, but that's up to you.
But in Marathon, any and all noise you make is broadcast to EVERYONE on the map. They intentionally made this change shortly after launch to encourage more PvP encounters. To make matters worse, extraction points are generally in the middle of the map, and activating them generates lights and sounds to attract other players, which further encourages PvP encounters. And there's no Insurance, so if you lose rare equipment, you can just go fuck yourself entirely, especially as most of the gear in the game cannot be purchased from the store, it can only be found on the maps. The risks are not optional, you MUST fight everyone else on the map, and chances are you'll lose everything with no way to get it back.
To make matters worse, if you want to access the endgame story content, you cannot do so solo. You're forced to team up. You're forced to wipe the entire endgame map of all enemy players in order to access and fight the PvE boss safely. The risk is not optional, and you can't even access the endgame map unless you intentionally bring expensive equipment with you, so there's a 95% chance you'll just lose everything and all you can do is go fuck yourself. And again: This is mandatory to progress the game's story and see anything interesting!

The whole game is specifically engineered to be absolutely miserable for 95% of players, so 95% of players quit the game. It sold over 1,200,000 million copies, yet is barely pulling 22,000 players. What a disaster.

Arc Raiders didn't kill a better game in the form of Destiny 2 to prop itself up, so it makes sense that it gets more sympathy than Concordthon imo.
>>
>>736967942
The problem was from the very beginning that despite it even eventually ending up as the best game in the genre, it would never reach the mass appeal market solely because how much it places reliance on people not being retarded which is extremely rare from a video game in this day and age. It's also the reason it likely won't survive, not the fact that it's Concord which no one sane wants to play or a mish-mash of genres like Highguard.

Hope to have a "Fortnite moment" where being the first big-budget game in a relatively-unexplored genre will both open the public's eyes to the appeal to the genre, while squarely positioning them as the dominant dev in that specific market space, so they can hoover up infinite amounts of money forever.

Unfortunately, the genre they bet the farm on is one that just doesn't have mass appeal, not to say anything of every other questionable decision they made with the game.

All im saying is… if you guys want this game dead, you are doing a terrible job at it. Not even Highguard got this much hate. Also, Highguard didnt have the luxury of glowing reviews. Most people that played it, for free, said meh, and moved on with their lives, leaving the game to its fate. Marathon has a whole defense brigade. You people call them paid shills, but lets be honest, nobody is getting paid in this board, including jannies lel

Its because of monetization. Their data shows that solo players dont buy skins and shit so they get shafted. Marathon isnt the only live service slop that completly shits on solo players because of that.

Picrel, they cannot argue on anything remotely close to reality because their entire worldview is based on falsehoods, so they simply project their 24/7 emotional outbursts on you. They cannot fathom that you may ever have a logical point based on rational thinking and factual data, so they have to accuse you of what they do, having a temper tantrum due to irrational emotions.

It's that and a ton of postmodernist 'reality can be whatever I feel like it is' bullshit, but I don't want to get too deep into it since it's more /pol/ than /v/.

As for Marathon, the post patch chart recovery looks a lot flatter than usual. No springing back up as if everyone was just online and salivating to play. Maybe a bot farm got turned off somewhere.

Kernel level anticheat is never necessary, nor are they perfect. On server based games there are other methods to fight cheaters about as efficiently.
However rootkits are the "easy way" to do anticheat. So its about 3/4 laziness, and 1/4 malice (potential to collect some additional data and send it back home).

However gamers are walking dunning krugers when it comes to tech knowledge. They eat buzzwords like that up readily. So the added value of kernel level anticheat for corporations is that most normies get placeboed into thinking there are fewer cheaters, and that makes them less likely to complain even if they do encounter them.

The sad thing is they probably didn't pay for ALL of them.
Many games "journalists" do it in hopes of becoming paid shills one day.
Which is also why so many continue to glaze big, expensive release.
That is of course ignoring those who just do that shit for the agenda. With stuff like Marathon some will probably just praise it because the expect the "wrong" people to hate it.

The player count always pops a bit after patch day, and they're doing more experimental shit. The overall downward trend hasn't shown any signs of stopping, either.
>>
>>736979658
I'll probably go up again tomorrow due to the experimental game mode.
>>
>>736979719
The "experimental game mode" just forces everyone to free kit it up. Which means you can't win big by coming across some dead guy who the super sweat decided not to loot completely. It's all going to be trash.

Now as garbage as this is, it's still less harsh on the noobs than the existing non stop rapefest, so there might be a bump, but I would be suprised if there's a big change from what ammounts to a shitty arena shooter mode.
>>
>>736979719

They didn't. ARC Raiders faced the same problems as Marathon but came up with an incredibly elegant solution: Aggression-based matchmaking.
If you engage in PvP, you're more likely to get matched with other players who engage in PvP.
If you instead try to cooperate with other players, you're more likely to get matched with other players who try to cooperate.

This completely solves the problem. People who just wanna play Team Deathmatch can play Team Deathmatch, and those who don't, simply don't have to.
Best of all, there's nothing actually stopping you from suddenly shooting someone anyway during cooperation, so there's still tension even when working with other players. All the upsides with very few downsides.

Marathon, in comparison, is made by people who want the whole game to be PvP.
They are only now, five weeks into release, adding a system (C.A.R.R.I) that rewards you for cooperating with other players. The roadmap they released at launch shows it was planned all along, so why the fuck did they wait until the game was in a fatal freefall before implementing it?

>>736969702
>>736969739
That's even worse. I wrote 95% to give myself some leeway with player numbers.
>>
>>736974104
When you die in Marathon, you lose your entire inventory. You don't just lose points/ratings, you actually lose all your weapons and equipment, permanently. It's far, far more punishing than other PvP experiences. Even other extraction-shooters like Tarkov have systems that let you pay in-game currency to get your inventory back. Marathon doesn't.
>>
>>736980423
Marathon could add ABMM today and it wouldn't do much. The maps are too small and the UESC robots are too generic and limited in type to make a PVE Marathon anything other than a content poor (and uglier) Destiny.

>>
>>736980423
It gets glossed over a lot since most people posting about Marathon haven't actually played it but the game released incomplete. It's missing a lot of things that were clearly meant to be in the game at launch. One faction doesn't have a quest line and their cosmetics are only being added in this patch even though they're equivalent to the other factions in every way.

It held above 30,000 for a month, but it's been losing like 1,000-4,000 players a day.

It never reached the 80,000 it had at launch past the weekend. It's been no where but down and day old "24 hour peaks" on StDB for ages now. It's honestly shocking Bungle and Sony haven't thrown the towel in yet. It's clear Cyro and all their temp shit isn't bringing people back in massive numbers.
>>
>>736981887
>it's honestly shocking Bungie and Sony haven't thrown the towel in yet
The numbers weren't dire enough to cancel it after a month (like Highguard), and it wasn't a complete disaster (like Concord), but it's clear the game won't ever make a profit. Sony's next investor call is going to be real interesting if Marathon is struggling to pull 20k peaks by then.

That's not the case for Marathon. Exfils can appear in any of the predetermined locations, which are all over the map, mostly near PoIs. But final exfil is always near the center, which I like because that makes it more or less equidistant from the map edges.

it's bungie's patented bullet magnetism(TM). Similar concept but different, since aim assist pulls your cursor to enemy bodies while bullet magnetism just nudges the bullet toward certain areas. Or to put another way, aim assist is proactive, bullet magnetism is reactive.

I am having a good amount of fun I think. That was only true for Xbox (being part of MS), but even they got neutered after wasting too much money. (Granted, almost $80b to get ActiBlizz and Bethesda, plus decades of loss on the Xbox hardware was way higher than Sony wasting $4b on Bungie.

Sony's a lot more deliberate with their money, and their new CEO was already shit talking Bungie as early as last November about how much they cost. VC money also dried up bad since 2025. I think companies aren't gambling on $250m+ moonshots anymore.
