Here is the bottom line

BotW:
+Better "Story"
+Better UI (more smooth gameplay)
+Better puzzles
+Novelty
-Dungeon Lead Ups, Dungeon aesthetics (Main Quest)
-Bosses
-Music
-Sidequest
-Variety (Enemies, no caves, etc)
-Finale

TotK:
+Bosses
+Combat (actual reasons to fight things for mats to make Scythes and shit)
+Variety (Enemies, caves, etc)
+Dungeon Lead Ups and Aesthetics (main quest)
+Music
+Sidequest
+Finale
-UI (very clunky UI)
-Puzzles
-Story
-Novelty

Conclusion? Neither is that much better than the other. Prove me wrong /v/.

Even though the story should theoretically be a small factor for both, TOTK’s felt so offensively bad that it’s what I remember most about it

feels right, totk was pretty fun but disappointing if i think "i waited 7 years for this?"
The depths was just that one shitty pitchblack botw shrine but for a whole zone, the sky islands sure are there, and there's not enough new outfits (and the outfits that are new feel oddly girly, like they were meant for zelda or something)

I do wonder if people have replayed each of these games beyond their initial run. Often you hear how BotW made them feel, but that was on a first playthrough. Any sense of discovery is officially gone and the poor bosses, Sidequest, variety and main quest stand out. Whereas with TotK people say it made BotW feel like a "tech demo", but on a second run you realize the game can be annoyingly clunky to play, and how easily cheesed much of the game is.

Totk literally has the better story, lol.

That is something I always wonder about the older titles. You hear everyone praise Oot all the time, from the perspective of their first playthrough. They can't stand to play it without a schizophrenic item and area entrance shuffle now. You can tell their wires are all crossed and misfiring.

For some I think building genuinely turns them off. It's admittedly a bit clunky at first but after a few hours it didn't seem like a big deal. Since the game was built around that mechanic people couldn't look past it and it killed much of the game for them. That and the reused overworld over shadowed anything positive the game did (i.e despite TotK having more variety in combat enemies and bosses, a largely better mainline quest content rich wise, and a better ending).

It even repeats the same bad time travel paradoxes from Skyward Sword since two Master Swords end up existing at the same time.

Building feels like a natural extension of the block pushing puzzles from previous games, I love it.

Original map vs reused map in an exploration-based game means BotW wins by default

Not upon revisit. BotW doesn't hold up on a replay given how it is in comparison to the main quest line of TotK, and how much it lacks in the world from enemies, to caves, to actually diverse bosses, and an actual decent final boss.

>b-but muh isolation and feels to exploring the unknown.

I play games more than once to really accurately judge them. That "feeling" doesn't hold up on replay.

TotK is worse because it could have fixed BotW's flaws. The six year wait between SS and BotW still had games coming out. The wait from BotW and TotK? Ports and crummy spinoffs. The wait from TotK to the next game? BotW and TotK with a better framerate and a topdown game with BotW's menu. TotK only tacked more stuff on BotW and added more problems atop of BotW problems as stated before.

>link uses master sword
>link sends it back in time
>zelda is charging the mastersword for 1000 years
>during this 1000 years, the sword that link has been using doesnt cease to exist, it is both in his hands and being charged in zelda's head
>there are 2 master swords existing at the same time
you are retarded for not understand this, and other anon is retarded for thinking that its a paradox.

> totk has better music than botw

this is so bizarrely wrong its the first time I've ever heard someone say it. Not even mad, just completely bizarrely wrong that invalidates the entire thread

I'm mystified

Open worlds aren't about exploration or even non-linearity, they're just an interactive, padded level select. The actual exploration and non-linearity is contingent on the "levels" in the open world level select, and on those merits BotW/TotK are not games about exploration.
>>736992975
>TotK is worse because it could have fixed BotW's flaws
It couldn't have fixed BotW's flaws, because those flaws have been either getting consistently worse in the Zelda team or are mainstays of Fujibayashi directed Zelda games.
People like to say that BotW was a reaction to SS, but they're not really all that different, the director is just a bit more experienced at leading the same project.
>The 6 year wait
Yeah, that's the problem. 3 years of development time is all a modern, professionally developed title really needs, anything else represents either a drastic development shift (moving to a new engine, throwing out most work due to a paradigm shift) or a catastrophic failure (switching studios, amateur work, consultants, trying to bail out a sunk cost pit).
