Yeah. SA2 looked insane and is 60fps, nothing to do with SA1 looking like an N64 game at 30fps.
Even with how old the hardware was they must have a plan to get VF4 running, too. That would have looked worse than the PS2 version for sure, it wouldn't have been too noticeable worse also, considering some complete amateur managed to run VF4 stages on DC.

the biggest problem of the console long term is actually the controller. Piece of shit has way too few buttons and a whole missing stick. The disk is also a huge problem.

It was a weird time. RE4 was designed with the intent of being a Gamecube exclusive, it didn't start getting ported off to everything under the sun until after the Wii edition. Technically, Mikami still owes us a self-beheading over the PS2 version. He still cared about that at the time.

There's a classic story of an MS exec pissing Mikami off at the time because he asked what games are to them, Nintendo said games are toys, Sony said games are entertainment, MS couldn't give a straight answer and gave a soulless corpo lecture, so he never had RE4 or any RE game ported to the OG Xbox.

I don't think it's that bad considering when it came out. The N64 was barely 2 years old at the time and the Dualshock was maybe a year old. It was a wild time of rapid evolution and Sega shot their shot too soon, but for 1998 standards I think they did alright.

I'd argue that the Dreamcast failed in great part due to Sega never getting out of their "We're an arcade company" mindset. They never really saw consoles as anything more than a way to release home ports of arcade titles. While this worked pretty good for the Mega Drive/Genesis, even as early as the NES their competitors were realizing that consoles allowed for a lot of kinds of gameplay that arcades couldn't really replicate no matter how much more powerful they may have been. But Sega refused to really learn that lesson and the Saturn and Dreamcast were both designed and marketed as basically the equivalent of the NeoGeo AES. But whereas the NeoGeo even in the arcade golden age of the early 90's knew to stick to it's lane and be a "boutique" console for rentals and hobbyists, Sega thought the mass audience still wanted ports of quarter munchers at the turn of the millennium. Like look at the Dreamcasts library in the two (really 3) year lead it had on the PS2. It's basically nothing but arcade ports when Sony was releasing expansive games like Final Fantasy 9. Had the Dreamcast actually used its massive head start to build up a big library of console style games to show off against the PS2's pathetic launch lineup, they may not have gotten crushed so quickly and easily.

I remember the first time I played a fps on console and the dual stick control scheme just seemed so natural it's really confusing to me why it took so long to really solidify itself. I just didn't really play any shooters before that, not on PC or otherwise so I guess I just had a fresh mind for it. Same feeling with mouselook, I'm even more confused why that took a while as well.

They're neat proof of concepts but if you actually cared about playing, you probably already have a PC, laptop, or phone that can run all these N64 and GC games already. Translating the game code to run on different hardware is one thing.
Optimizing the game is a completely different matter and requires a lot of time and hardware and software knowledge... like a complete team that fully understands how the game engine and the hardware that runs it work.

The only reason (and that is the ONLY reason) the dreamcast failed was it completely lacked anti piracy protection, people could burn discs and straight up play them on the console, I know because I was there.

Third party developers stopped developing for a console that couldn't ensure sales of their games and jumped ship, that's literally all there is to it.

Not true. The exploit that allows burned games circumvents the checks completely. The last Dreamcast revision removes MIL-CD support (the thing that was being exploited) and still to this day can not play burned games.
