Beat pic related today and I admire E33 for how strikingly it blends style, emotion, and atmosphere into something that feels both grand and painfully intimate. I especially love the way its setting, combat, and artstyle all seem to serve the same eerie, dreamlike mood. The combat's probably the best the JRPG genre has to offer. That being said I do think it eventually leans a little too hard into family drama shite, and while that gives the story emotional weight (both for me as a player and the characters), it also makes some of the broader mystery and scale feel narrower than I felt was set up.I totally get why everyone liked it so much though. Easily a 9/10. Lune is best girl.

>>736994325I agree with it and I'm one of the game's most outspoken defenders on vee. It's still an 11/10 game and I still like the direction the story took in the final chapter. But I wish it wasn't such a hard pivot from the original premise. You can take the story in that direction and show everything they showed while still finding at least a little time to relate it back to the people of Lumiere and their near century-long struggle. I have absolutely no issue with the fact that everything occurs inside a magical painting controlled by the Dessendres or that none of them ultimately care about its inhabitants. It would be nice for the game itself to care though. Even just a mention from Maelle as she's pleading to her father, accompanied by some sort of montage or flashback, would be something at least.
>>736994163Really a terrific example of what modern writing is missing. E33 is written earnestly and isn't afraid of trying to illicit actual emotion with its storytelling. Modern writers are fucking allergic to earnest storytelling and instead everything has to be sarcastic, ironic, and couched in nihilism. E33 was incredibly refreshing in terms of storytelling.

Games like Bravely Default and SaGa series, where you actually have to think about your team composition, are rare. I never liked SMT, but seeing how far they've fallen with V's casualisation is tragic too see.

>>736996669>I never liked SMT, but seeing how far they've fallen with VClearly you've never played them either, because the earlier games' combat was both far easier and simpler than newer titles.
>>736996479It really is great and ranks high among JRPGs. Maybe not the best as I haven't played all 9000 of them but up there for sure. The main thing it's missing, which I hope they introduce for the sequel, is a tempo control system, something akin to Grandia's IP gauge or SMT press turns. I would perhaps also like dodging/parrying to come at some sort of action economy or opportunity cost, so that it weighs into the strategy of the fight instead of being its own minigame which is universally advantageous and with zero downside. Those are improvements though and based on my personal taste. The system is pretty fucking good as is.
>>736994325It's true and I had the same issue initially.>Oh, so the world doesn't matter, it's just a drama about some pretentious ass people I know nothing aboutIt's the "what I want the game to be" vs "what it actually is. For what it tries to do imo it's really good, I think Verso and Maelle are some of the best written characters in vidya, but the "I don't give a rat's ass about some random cunts with god powers" reaction is perfectly valid. I'd guess they did it this way to kinda put the player in Maelle's shoes, to perceive the setting as more than what it actually is, but it clearly did backfire to some degree.
>>736994829>"I voted E33, because apparently it's "astroturfed" whatever that means">"I mean, I see the word used in relation to E33 all the time on /v/"That one guy on /v/ who spams the word won hard with this.

>>736996992I'm talking about the older titles, that 'old = good, new = bad' faggots would claim as being better despite having never played them. III is indeed harder, SJ is harder for the most part until endagame, where VV is probably the hardest in the series when you start fighting the optional endgame bosses.

>>736994163I loved the game, but being able to literally spam dodge and parry makes the game being turn-based completely pointless, because you're acting out of turn. I don't think having Souls-style bosses that spam attacks works well with the turn-based format, but that's just me. Still an amazing game though.

>>736994163Did you not get the new script? That was last year's shill game. This year you're supposed to shill Crimson Desert.
>>737001825The issue, as they critics it, lies in reframing the game from being about an entire civilisation going extinct, to being just about one family's drama, as the painted are not real according to them. In-game, only Clea holds this view, and she's not exactly a reliable source. Everyone else, from real Renoir to real Verso, see the painted people as real. I consider them sentient beings, with the capacity to feel emotion, pain, create works of art (painted Alicia's poem) and even rebel against their creator. I see the Dessendre family as greek gods, their family drama destroying entire civilisations.

Some of them do a really good job of setting up the gravity of the work the party has to do, only to have some giant plot twist at the end to render it all NULL AND VOID. Xenoblade is a fairly good offender in this. Tales handles them a "little" more intelligently. A twist in Tales adds surprising context as opposed to rendering the entire plot up to that point moot. That said, E33 does try to warn you. It's a hilarious moment, because it's a fantasy game and you don't fucking question why everything looks the way it does, unless you're already spoiled. Strongest points: Story, MUSIC (especially), characters and acting/voice acting. It also gets bonus points for nostalgiafags that like overworld exploration and old RPG level designWeakest points: It's still an asset flip. Sometimes you can REALLY smell the generic UE cutscenes in transitions and camera anglesAlso very poorly balanced act 3. When the game launched, you had no way of knowing whether going straight to the final mission or doing sidequests was the way to go. You could go and do a million different side pieces of content and then go to the final mission and one shot the final boss. If you first do the endings and THEN do the side content, much of the mystery and magic dies out simply because the game is already over, regardless of any additional piece of loreIt's still undeniable that gaming would be a little bit better if most big studios adopted these kinds of projects
