I am playing Metroid Prime 4 again and I realized that people were too hard on it. It's nowhere near as bad as people make it out to be. It has great music, great graphics, great performance, and great boss battles. It's only real issue is that it can be annoying. However Prime 4 isn't the only annoying game to exist. There's far more annoying game experiences out there. Take Silksong for example, that's a really annoying game people love in spite of it. In Prime 4 you are treated to epic high flying moments, and then you arrive out in Sol Valley where despite your map being marked with the location of the final teleporter master key, Myles Mackenzie will radio you and say it's Volt Forge time. You go there any have a fantastic boss fight against Sylux and then the annoyance, you have to take the thunder chip all the way back to Fury Green to install the thunder beam, despite there being places to use it already. Sure it's annoying, but that's all it is, then you're back exploring again and soaking up the atmosphere the game carefully cultivates. This is a good game, not a perfect one, and there's no doubt in my mind that people will come around to it sometime this console generation and be claiming it's the second or third best Prime game in the series.
millennial writing 0/10
It's a good 7/10 game, but we don't need to write essays on it.
>>736998835Terrible game design, terrible characters, terrible story. What do you mean with annoying? Silksong is a masterpiece.
>>736998835not a real metroid game
>>736998835I feel like it had everything that made the other games good, but unfortunately can't really do anything better or different than that. You could really feel the troubled development and at some point Nintendo gave them a deadline and development became rushed and unfocused. Like if they had more time they could've turned the game into something more fully realized, but it had already been too long. I sort of hope they can have more time to work on the game and update it because it feels like Nintendo's version of stuff like Cyberpunk though definitely not as buggy or underbaked.
>>736999109>I feel like it had everything that made the other games goodlol no, the level design and exploration suck dick compared to the original trilogy. Yes, even prime 3 which was noticeably worse on that front compared to 1/2
I sure love constantly switching between scan and gun mode in the middle of the game, whoever thought of this mechanic should get a raise!
>>736998835The game, much like many modern games, has the fingerprints of amateurs focusing more on pointless gestures to trick their oversight, rather than developing a good game. The game calls itself a Metroid Prime game, not because it is designed like a Metroid game (though at this point there are more non-Metroidvanias in the Metroid series than the other way around), but because there is an existing audience for it that will ask fewer questions because BRAND.The game was given to Retro studios, not because they had the skills to make it, but because people remember that a studio sharing their name made the Prime games. The game uses open world, not for any real purpose, but because it's the most effective way for the developers to buy time for a doomed project by making the development burden look significantly larger and more complete than it actually is.The game includes foreskin helmets, not because it the players will like having NPCs shoved in their faces every 5 seconds, but because it will make the consultants happy who have been assigned to try to bail out a project that has in development for years with no progress.
>>736999095then why is it in your metroid game tier list?
>>736998835I agree with you (except for Silksong, which is my GOTY) , but the /v/ narrative is that it's a disgusting piece of garbage that's even worse than Other M.I think it basically depends on what you like in a Metroid Prime game. If you like to get lost and feel alone, then yeah it's a bad game. But I like the gameplay and ambiance far more than I like the level design. 2 things where MP4 shines with the best bosses of the prime series and an absolutely flawless art direction reminiscent of Alien/The Thing. The backtracking and exploration in MP1 and 2 where teddious as fuck, and I played those game at 15 on release. The hint system was god aweful too.In MP4 the level design is garbage, yes that's true. And the desert is usueless, that's also true. But since I didn't care too much about those I really enjoyed my time with the game. I just wish the game let you pick Hard difficulty right away , and that McKenzie shut up to let you get lost instead of telling you where to go nonstop. As you said, it makes it a "good" game. But this is /v/ and youtuber clickbait video mindfucked everyone into hating the game before playing it so it was a lost cause.
>>736998835Correct take.
>>736998835I thought It was 2006 or something when I was playing it. Then I checked. oh shit it is 2026.
>>736998835Silksong was a great game that made fomobaited retards butthurt when it dared present something resembling a challenge, and that was the result of the devs making a game they though the fans of Hollow Knight would enjoy. Prime 4 was a massive shitheap that was in every way worse than the first three games, and that was almost assuredly the result of corporate fuckheads trying (and failing) to pander to a wider audience, fucking over their longtime fans in the process. The two games are nothing alike.

Sex with balls.
>>736999109Yeah it's not really fair, the game was announced with a title card drop during the first year of the Switch, and Retro wasn't even handed the project until years later.
>>736999482>Desert is barrenWowEvery other area is pretty
>>736999179Saying it's worse than Prime 3 just feels incredibly contrarian at this point.
>>736999267I really wish they would just go ahead and give a scan burst that files everything in the room to logbook already. I don't see the point of keeping the scan visor stuff going forward. I cannot imagine anyone likes the missable scans that Prime series is known for. Things you see with your eyes should just have things to read about in the logbook automatically.
>>736999179I feel like all the Prime games had pretty poor exploration to begin with, but it's just the nature of being fully 3D and them not having the time or patience to stick secrets in every corner, which is understandable.
>>736999346It's definitely a Prime game, but it might have been better to call it a new sub series title. It's a good game for newcomers to Metroid, but it's titled as the fourth game in a series and that could turn people off.>open worldYou say that, and the only semblance is Sol Valley which is most definitely better described as a hubworld. What exactly is open about the area? that it's large? the other areas it connects to are in the corners of the map. I wish we got an open world Metroid game, it would have been an interesting experience.
>>736999752Not only you have to constantly switch mode, but it also takes some time to switch for fuck's sake. I died multiple times because I wasn't able to tell if it switched mode midfight and I wasn't able to deploy the shield.Garbage design.

>>736999752Also I spent the entire game scanning things and for what? Literally for no reason, I don't give a shit about some artwork I can look up on my pc.Makes me furious.
>>736999375>except for Silksong, which is my GOTYHow do you not agree, that game is super annoying all the time. When I played it I had the most miserable time all the time. It felt like it was designed just to be as punishing as possible. I never felt like it rose above being Dark Souls as a platformer.
>>736999932It's bad mechanics for no reason. It's bad game design.
>>736999509There's a difference between something being challenging and something being needlessly tedious. Every boss fight in Silksong overstayed its welcome, had unpredicable attacks your first bouts with them, and when you died you were sent really far back to a checkpoint. I can't imagine loving it too much even if you claim to, because there has to be some amount of luck, and entertaining masochistic tendencies. Maybe loving the game just to stick it to others, priding yourself in your elite gamer skills. I've played many better games than Silksong in my life, and to think people thought of it as a GOTY contender the year Donkey Kong Bananza came out is laughable.
Metroid Prime was always shit.
>>736998835It’s ok, but without exaggerating everything Snoys wouldn’t have any ammo against Nintendo, so that’s how it ended up
>>736999960Not him. That is not annoying lol. This is annoying >>736999953>>737000078The only bad thing about Silksong are the gang fights because it's hard to track 10 things at the same time.I'm a boomer with slow reflexes, Silksong is fine. Its game design is excellent.>and to think people thought of it as a GOTY contender the year Donkey Kong Bananza came out is laughable. You must be fucking joking, a baby game with boring gameplay and zero artistic merit is GOTY? >>737000078>>736999960So it was tendies who cried about Silksong at release, I see. Eveything makes sense now.
>>736999375I went in wanting to love the game and ended up disliking it, and not for the reasons you assume. I love games like Metroid Fusion that are slandered for being linear, but Metroid Prime 4 doesn't hold its own in enough areas compared to a game like Fusion. While the graphical fidelity is impressive for the hardware, the art direction itself is quite safe with the exception of areas like Chrono Tower and Volt Forge. The majority of the areas seem like they're trying to ape Prime 1, both in their visuals and their set-pieces, and are failing miserably, which is especially strange considering they just remade the game on the same hardware. Also Prime 4's bosses are probably the worst in the series, since they either boil down to one-note puzzle solutions (flower boss, sand worm) or damage sponges with constantly repeating attacks (omega griever, ice boss, Sylux phase 1), with final FINAL boss being the only glimmer of good boss design.
ACfag detected.
The level design is just so shit that it's hard to like the game. And while thematically a desert should be barren and empty, why the fuck would you use something like that to connect every fucking area and making traversing it mandatory?
>>737001225The thing I hate the most about the bosses is that most of the time you can't avoid damage. Sylux is the worst offender.
your historical revisionism and post-mortem shilling will never catch on, beyond is kusoge. being a contrarian doesn’t make you interesting, your /v/ peers don’t actually respect it outside of (you) farming
>>736999873It's not really like a Prime game and is more of a devolution than Corruption was.>It's a good game for newcomers to MetroidIt's not really reflective of the overall series at all (even accounting for the fact that only half the Metroid games are even still Metroidvanias) and like you said it's the fourth game in the Prime series, mainly for marketing purposes, and includes some random pre-existing character that no newcomer would have any investment in.>You say that, and the only semblance is Sol Valley which is most definitely better described as a hubworld. What exactly is open about the area? that it's large? the other areas it connects to are in the corners of the map. I wish we got an open world Metroid game, it would have been an interesting experience.A hubworld would be smaller and more focused, this is more clearly an open world that includes elements to collect and waste your time with. Open worlds aren't generally that well defined, but at their core they're just an interactive level select with stuff to collect, there's nothing you can really use to disqualify Prime 4 that wouldn't disqualify most open worlds like Asscreed, BotW or SotC.
>>736999109>OP) #>I feel like it had everything that made the other games goodAbsolutely not. The desert was the least of the things that bothered me. The biggest issue here is that the areas themselves were corridors without any remote sense of mystery. They just sucked, so the desert, which could have worked as some sort of palate cleanser, feels even emptier, because its not like you would need a rest from exploring the simple ass areas. And yes, even the frozen lab was too simple, no matter how cool the setting seemed on paper.
>>736999095>pretending Beyond is better than Other M>Echoesfag putting that above SMEchoesfags continung to be insufferable
Nothing will change the fact that Prime 4 is a disappointing game. Yeah, I'm sure everyone here waited nearly a decade just for the final game to be unfinished builds desperately taped together by a desert. The level design is shit as stated already multiple times, but then combat is largely the same three enemies reskinned when Samus is on foot and the bike is dealing with like two, maybe the most fun thing is the charged lightning beam chaining on targets and that's not a feature mutually exclusive to this game. Why do the teleporter keys have so much emphasis in moving the plot when they're pretty much the last thing Samus actually needs? Three sets of key items and nobody could make up their mind on what to ditch, you can tell the game was reshuffled so much before looking at all the unused dialogue. Its only impressiveness is that it looks and runs mostly fine on the original Switch, loading times aside since you're podding your ass back and forth to Mackenzie or the JO crystal deposit. They could have jewed people into buying a new console for it but they didn't.
>>736998835Dude psychic boots lmao
>>736998835The game has many lows but also some great highs like the bosses, omega griever is one of the best metroid bosses.
>>737007142The lab would've been better if it was something other than a straight corridor. They even had those cool outside areas that they could've used to weave the different parts of the lab together, creating shortcuts between the different parts and having a general traversal hub for the lab so it would have felt bigger than it really was and also have the backtracking area feel more natural instead of just being another small corridor at the start of the lab

You can't even see what the hell he's doing because you're locked onto the tentacle and you're view is limited so even if you wanted to let it go and dodge you can't.This is just one example. The stupid dog fight with a hidden timer is also another example. Why even waste ammo? just dodge in ball form. It's just stupid game design piled onto stupid game design.
>>736998835I beat it and 100%'d on hard mode yesterday, i enjoyed it a lot. Even the NPCs grew on me, i really wanted to save them at ending... I agree there are a lot of things that could have been done better, but it is not anywhere close to be a terrible game. Hopefully they address those issues in Prime 5 if it ever happens...that being said. 2 > 1 > 4 > 3
>>737008875The parry is bad.The dual analog controls are unnecessary and just make the game more error prone. The upgrades are kind of lackluster, especially the pickups that are just missiles and health, since most of your upgrades are just lock&key alt modes for missiles (storm missiles) and bombs (cross bombs), so all the pickups just get funneled into missiles. The EMMI sections are tumors. The Metroidvania style map feels really weirdly designed with constant turnstiles and teleports, so it's not comfy to traverse when doing anything other than the intended route. The sequence breaks feel like a checklist, to the point that powerbombs are just explicitly disabled if you get any before you are supposed to have them.It was fun to play, but there is a lot wrong with it.>>737009310>Difficulty is higher in the game where every setpiece or boss respawns you right outside the gate with full HP.

It's "open" but also distinctly separate from the actual locations you go to.It's baffling this was the "compromise" they decided when they decided to not do an actual BotW style open world, because Zelda moved away from this structure since it was basically satisfying nobody - neither the people who wanted a linear game, nor the ones that wanted an actual open world experience.

>>736998835People hate it because Mckenzie exists. And they are right, he shouldn't exist, his mere presence and whenever he opens his mouth turns the game instantly into 1/10.If you could mod that piece of shit from the game, and it would rocket INSTANTLY to being at lest a solid 7-8/10.
Desu of all things that this game does, the bossfights are where I think it actually surpasses the other metroid prime games. Not necessarily in terms of presentation, because I think quadraxis is still my favorite boss. But in terms of gameplay bosses are way more involved and require more shooting and more dodging. I actually died to sylux in the final fight when I replayed it on hard mode, even when I had 100% completion.

Super has shit bosses and is a much better game, Prime 4 has great bosses too but the game sucks
All style, no substance. The whole game is extremely linear, the set pieces are extremely linear, the desert adds nothing but tedium, the green crystals are tedium, enemies are basic ass variants of themselves (ice, fire, desert), new abilities aren't interesting and is just Samus's regular abilities with "psychic" as a prefix, the characters range from mediocre to annoying, the story is poorly made, Sylux is not even in the game except the beginning tutorial area and the final boss, the game games the deaths of the characters multiple times before their real deaths for "emotional impact", the ending sucks shit because Samus left people to die after killing Sylux when he fell into the void (but haha not really! Somehow Sylux returned)And the game trying to make some stupid religion with Solan or whatever is gay as fuck.>Samus… may the force be with youThe only decent things are the visuals and music, but you barely get to be in those areas because they're just looping, one-way hallways. And the pyschic spider ball but that is barely used to it's potential. The bosses were neat and I like this game's combat, but there were a lot of SPHERE bosses and their connection to Metroids and Sylux are barely explained other than>this thing got Metroid in it!And with the enemy variants, why are so many games doing this. Especially Nintendo. BOTW did this a ton and even after ToTK added a few new enemies it was still bare for such a large world. Kirby Star Allies did this too when they said they were bringing back the ability to combine Kirby abilities. I thought it would be like the N64 where Kirby has some unique combinations, but it was just>sword>ice sword>fire sword>electric swordIt's such a lazy way to add variety

>>737016250not him but you're a retard, constant long loading times in Dread are a bigger problem than most other games because Dread focuses on quick action/movement based gameplay as opposed to methodical exploration of the older metroid games. >>736998835It’s a 6/10 game in a series where the minimum expectation is a 9. It has redeeming qualities, such as the controls, the bosses, the graphics are probably the best in any game ever and the music is amazing. There is just way too many flaws to consider it a good game though, the desert and the linearity really kills it.
>>737015548I'm pretty sure I got hit several times.I also got hit during the electric dragon thunder storm when staying on safe spots. Fucking bullshit.
The final boss where all your retarded friends have stormtrooper level aim and are constantly dying cemented this as the worst by far one for me.
On a surface level it's fine. The gunplay is in line with the series, arguably slightly better with some of the new shooting mechanics and combined controller and gyro aim. The visuals are solid, locations well designed visually. But anything beneath the surface level begins to feel like an outright worse game than the series has been before. Locations are designed extremely linearly with no natural looping in the way that typically defines Metroid, effectively every location is just a long straight line coming out of the central map. The central map itself doesn't serve the game, and never feels worth it or particularly fun. Vi-O-La could be fun if it was in a game where there was literally anything in the map where you use it, but then at that point why are we discussing what an open world motorcycle gameplay should be like in fucking METROID. It's fine. It's not an abhorrent experience. But under any scrutiny it really falls apart.
