Why are devs getting so good at making retro games whilst modern games are running worse and looking worse. Where have all the good devs gone?

One does it for a hobby and has way more free time while the other is limited by money and time constraints.
>>
>>737024646
A small group of people or a single dude working on something that already has a solid foundation, at their own pace.
Modern games are 100+ devs messes in which only a few of them share the vision and aren't just there to get paid for codemonkey work and whatnot. Even a great game with a great director will struggle to get that vision to transfer to all the devs when things get so massive
>>
>>737024646
wtf. are there games made using stuff like this?
i didnt think there were that many creative projects for old consoles but there should be more since anyone could just run them with an emulator even right?

They should be porting n64/PS1 games to Dreamcast.

As it turns out porting a game to a more powerful system is hard so that will filter all the retards.

You have to think about what to add and what not to fuck with.

These games usually end up being pretty good fan remasters like RE4 project hd.

The easier it is to port a game, the more likely it will end up being shit.

You usually just want to go one step forward. So n64 to dreamcast is hard to fuck up.

>Was the Dreamcast weaker than the PS2
Yeah, in every way. GTA 3 wasn't highly optimized and didn't make full use of PS2's hardware capability though. GTA 3 port for Dreamcast has lowered geometry, scaled down texture assets, more optimized asset streaming routines, and more optimized stuff in general, yet it still runs worse than the PS2 version.

The Dreamcast GPU has double the VRAM
Good luck running shenmue on PS2 rofl
>>
>>737035162
>Dreamcast GPU has double the VRAM
PS2's RAM to VRAM throughput is higher than Dreamcast's VRAM bandwidth.
>shenmue
There are dozens of PS2 games with better graphics than shemue.
>>
>>737036080
With larger VRAM and tiled rendering, the DC can render a larger framebuffer at higher native resolution (with an on-chip Z-buffer), and with texture compression, it can compress around 20–60 MB of texture data in its VRAM. Because the PS2 has only 4 MB VRAM, it relies on the main RAM to store textures. While the PS2's CPU–GPU transmission bus for transferring polygons and textures is 50% faster than the Dreamcast's CPU–GPU transmission bus, the DC has textures loaded directly to VRAM (freeing up the CPU–GPU transmission bus for polygons) and texture compression gives it higher effective texture bandwidth.

Dozens of games and none of them are shenmue because it can't run these "inferior" graphics

I can't think of a game that has aged worse than GTA 3.

>games don't age you stupid zoomer
I bought GTA1 the day it came out and played every mainline game in the series.
>>
>>737024169
I don't know what's this obsession with old consoles? Why do you care about closed proprietary product that was ignored by devs and publishers back then? GTA 3 was released on Windows PC, platform that had more freedoms back then, and now there's reverse engineered port that you can run on more platforms: Linux, macOS with different CPU architectures (this Dreamcast port is actually same reverse engineered engine).
People should grow up and realize that corporations are not their friends, and even if this shitty console succeed instead of other shitty consoles their life wouldn't be any better.

It actually has better geometry from the Xbox version, it has double the draw distance compared to PS2 (since this is PC source port) but most importantly the game runs at 480p and not interlaced, meaning double the vertical res while running at a similar framerate as PS2.

old games were made by the old masters in tight teams, porting them is not the same as making a new game
new games are made by bloated replaceable drones and sweatshop pajeets

I've always wanted to see devs put out a new title developed with their old engines.
For example, Nintendo shocks everybody by making a new Zelda game that would be the third game on the OoT engine in current year. Surely it would be cheap for them to do compared with building a new game and it would generate as much, if not more hype as the bulk of the audience is 90s-tards. It'd be interesting to see how modern devs do under the same limitations and with 30 extra years of industry development bias.

I'm not talking about a lame romhack either, I mean a full developmental wing dedicated to making a big*-budget modern 64 game
>>
>>737024348
because it makes console wars trannies shut the fuck up
>>
>>737032915
>still good a good benchmark (and the only standard) in scientific computing
You're right, but that's also because they generally have to worry about massive amounts of computations with highly precise floating point values.
Hence the term "FLoating point Operations Per Second".
It's a fair bit less relevant to games outside of poly count.
It would be nice to have a more generalized stat that takes overall hardware specs into account.
>>
>>737038197
Im with you on this anon.
I genuinely think the mandate that hardware and tech must improved year over year has been a cancer on the planet.

N64 gen shouldv'e lasted another 5 years and developers just have to push it to the absolute limit before the next generation arrives. IT would mean every single generation is packed, PACKED with games for the same hardware, and we've all learned through passage of time that more hardware does not equal better core games.

I bet Nintendo could've made something almost resembling Wind Waker and Twilight Princess on N64 with what we now know about developing for it.

Same goes for everything, cars, phones, all of it should be mandated that Toyota can't just make a new corolla every year. No, they have to support and maintain it for 10 years, parts and supply chains are numerous shit just works, no one is rebuying cars and phones and tech constantly, just repairing what we have until we truly truly need more tech prowess to continue.

360 generation could've easily kept going up to this current date so long as this push for 4k etc didn't exist. I guarantee you'd be able to run/develop a game like Elden Ring almost unchanged on PS3 given enough savant coding.

This shit is the real thing polluting our planet, not c02. Endless trash and plastic and waste and rubbish and manufacturing.

China should never have been allowed to manufacture anything for anyone also. Cheap goods = cheap wages = cheap way of life.

With the decomp we're getting to the point where every aspect of Ocarina of Time can be modified with new mechanics, items, levels, bosses. It goes beyond just a romhack and basically turns Ocarina of Time into a framework that you can extend to build your own games with as a foundation.

no, star fox 2 was completely finished in the 90s and they just decided not to release it.
nintendo still has some other finished games for old consoles they're sitting on like panel de pon 64 and odama for wii. they also just released two unreleased virtual boy games on NSO.

Does this mean gta 3 would have saved the dreamcast if it got ported back in the day?
