With random old guys aside from hoping they're knowledgeable, you also have to find one thats not too drunk to speak. Catholic priests might be better but you have to remember that the ultimate solution for them is God. They have experience with dealing with helping the community but they probably aren't prepared to deal with more special cases. Therapists are usually people who are a better learned in the field of mental illness and might have encountered people with your same issue, and if they haven't they can at least refer you to someone else through the network who might be able to help you.
