Instead all we get are Deviantart-tier OCs with passives and Hypers that get more and more absurd with each new release, because FUCK YOU if you play an older DLC character or god forbid a base game character. I finally gave in and quit with Hero Kai and Hyper Ellie's release, because being killed from full health as Fernet and Kyoko solely from Hero Kai using his Hyper was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Yes, but Nath has to sacrifice all of her Stars to do so. Hero Kai only gets set to 1HP, something that's negligible when you remember he gets +5 EVD, meaning nothing beyond a nuking attack is gonna threaten him.
Meanwhile the devs have a free ride to infinite DLC via cosmetics, yet the only one we've ever gotten was Suguri and Hime Winter Costumes for some reason. So many of these clone characters like Fernet (Noble), Natsumi (Sweet Blogger), Krilalaris (Pajamas), etc. could've just been cosmetics. Not only would it have cut down on the insane roster bloat, but again, people would still buy it. At this point I think the people working on the game are just allergic to good ideas.

They never really tried to balance the game, buffs and nerfs have rarely done much and almost never happen. Outside of the busted highroll hypers of newer characters, the same bully/tank statcheck statlines and decks have been the best pretty much since the game launched over a decade ago. Barely anything regarding the standard gameplay has improved since the game came out.

Eventually you realise that for Fruitbat it was never about fun gameplay. Phle and Hono want to be rich. So, character choice - especially DLC character choice, contributes to win rate much more than deck picks and card plays.

They want you to be addicts, always buying new dlc, because otherwise you can't play, and Phle can't go to sushi bars.

People definitely overhype the DLC units in general, but it's not quite cut and dry.

The best strategy for winning the game even before the game was on Steam was to always go for stars norma and to just rush through star normas as quickly as you could. This included avoiding battles (They don't give stars consistently), drawing cards (Drawing a card usually means skipping on a bonus panel), and trying to time landing on your home the moment you got the bare minimum stars for your norma. Logically this just makes the most sense because interacting with players less and trying to win as quickly as possible = less chances for things to go badly.

This meant that defensive characters were better since they could generally do that more consistently without dying, and spawning the boss faster heavily favors characters who are tanky enough to just shrug off the boss.
Every single balance change 100% Orange juice got to the overall gameplay was a nerf to this playstyle. This is because the devs know this strategy was good.

However the majority of people don't actually play this way. Most people actually play the opposite of this strategy. The most popular characters are all highly aggressive characters that often lack defense. This isn't just because people find this more fun, but because a large portion of 100% Orange Juice's playerbase is genuinely stupid and thinks this is the best strategy. They see big damage numbers and their brains go into big unga bunga mode.

Because of this, the DLC characters heavily favor offensive characters that have more and more bullshit ways to kill people. Because:
1. Defensive characters are less popular and less fun
2. Making better defensive characters actually threatens the balance of the game
3. Playing defensive is technically better, so "stronger" offensive characters is actually more balanced.

The DLC characters aren't OP, they're powercreep over old offensive characters that people mistakenly thought were good.

Yeah DEF is a seriously undervalued stat. Even +1 makes a character extremely hard to kill. +2 and +3 are almost a guaranteed win. Orange juice treats the stats as 1:1 but they're really not. +1 EVD is dogshit compared to +1 DEF and likewise ATK requires you to be able to start fights consistently and not instantly die to a lucky 5 from a DEF character. Any character with a combination of ATK and DEF is busted.
