Dreamcast in 1998 was truly ahead of its time

>Support for Sega's own fast/streamlined/documented SDK or Windows CE (to make porting games from the PC easier)
>SH4 CPU is say more complex than SH2. PVR is way more complex than anything doing graphics in Saturn
>480p with the DC's PowerVR GPU
>Rarely-used volumetric per-pixel shadows and volumetric fog features
>Order Independent Transparency and is the only system to date that came with OIT at the hardware level
>transparency sorting in hardware when regular PC cards made you manually sort transparencies
>16MB of RAM and only a 200Mhz CPU
>Native VGA out support
>independent filesharing between memory cards without the console needing to be present
>a large (again, for the time) optical disc format that stored up to 1GB of data
>dreamcast’s gpu could sort up to 256 layers according to transparency completely automatically. draw order was basically a non-issue for devs
>Had the highest quality video output of the generation, while PS2 was known for having the lowest quality and looking the blurriest overall
>Sonic Adventure, Shenmue, Soul Calibur, Jet Set Radio, Skies of Arcadia, Resident Evil Code Veronica, Dead or Alive 2 are technically impressive
>Modern game controller is heavily inspired by Dreamcast controller 25 years later
>Doom 64 port has entire world and the all of the player's weapons have real-time normal mapping (DOT3 bump mapping, with tangent-space light direction vectors and three-dimensional normal texture maps, that normal mapping) that interacts with my custom dynamic lighting system (up to 16 simultaneous point sources, geometry tessellation for improved quality)

Must have been a big success then

Too bad nobody could trust Sega after their long line of hardware fuck-ups. Their incompetence precedes even the 32X. Their handling of their 8-bit console line was atrocious. If it weren't for them beating Nintendo to the 16 bit leap and their use of aggressive marketing tactics, I don't think Sega would have survived past even the Genesis.

Only to get immediately outclassed by the PS2 just a year later lmao

Nintendo succeeded harder than ever with the Switch era despite fuck ups during the Wii/WiiU/3DS era, so why couldn't Sega turn the tables if they just played a bit smarter?

The Wii and 3DS sold great. Way better than any Sega product. The Wii U was the only real slump.
