>black and white game >still has yellow paintGames are a humiliation ritual now.
>>737105946I can see why it happens, games get playtested into oblivion and people drop games (particularly ones less than 20 dollars) if they can't immediately understand what's going on.
>>737105946>nowkek, they've been a humiliation ritual since their inception
kinda crazy that sports games are the only games without yellow paint
>>737106008Sure, the playtesting doesn't help, but fundamentally this kind of thing is just necessary in the kind of industry where you're working with hundreds of other people from inside and even outside the company that will continuously add to, contradict, change, remove and otherwise overwrite your work.Signposting needs to be obvious to avoid being completely scrubbed out and it can't depend on any prior trends or design language that may be changed or removed, hence something like yellow paint which is obviously a signal.>>737106635They're typically more tightly focused and rule-based, so they have a consistent design language or build on existing associations.
>>737106635They have yellow cards and flags instead
I'll be honest with you, I'll take yellow (or whatever other color) paint over having walk around scrutinizing with a magnifying glass for hours stuck on the level if the level designers are so incompetent that they literally can't think of any other ways to avoid this. And if anyone says it never happened to them in Doom, Heretic, Hexen, etc. then they are lying.
>>737106770It happened to me but I never complained about it. Would end up finding extra secrets due to back tracking.
>>737106770>Doom, Heretic, Hexen,Most of them are secrets
>>737106770>>737106825>Doomdepends which onedoom 2 was pretty clear cut.doom 64 i really had some trouble. a lot of switches opened doors that were nowhere near, kinda annoying
>>737106817Good for you, I think it easily gets annoying because running around aimlessly, even if I stumble upon secrets, is not fun and I'd rather do the fun part that is blowing up monsters.>>737106825I don't mean secrets, it happens with normal progression too.>>737106898Happened with all old-school Doom games, maybe not so much in 2 and I also remember getting stuck in 1 more, but definitely did happen there as well. 64 is by far the worst offender.
>>737106770>walk around scrutinizing with a magnifying glass for hoursThat's the best feeling. I love video games
>>737106965these games where designed for replaying, navigation was treated as a skill of its own
