You don't have to trust them or expect much from them, but you should still try to cultivate love for them, try to do what's best for them, and hope that they're able to improve. Everyone is on their own point on their journey towards understanding, you should accept them for where they are and treat them accordingly. And that doesn't mean giving away free shit or protecting people from consequences they invited, often treating people with mistrust is the most loving thing you can do for them. That doesn't change that kindling warmth in your heart is important, even if most people don't get to see it....And doing that is fucking hard, because again, most people are awful.
