>The Epic Games Store is almost 10 years old, launching all the way back in 2017. And while it's kind of come a long way since then – it has a search function now – it's still exponentially worse than Steam, which it was built to dethrone. https://archive.ph/wip/1vCTmhttps://www.ign.com/articles/the-epic-games-store-will-never-be-as-good-as-steam
Imagine if hey spent those 10 years improving the store to actually BE another option to steam.Instead of trying to coax people away from steam with free gamesInstead of manipulating people and legal systems with moral blackmail to try and force steam down to 12%Instead of diving deeper into fortnite being the only game they focus onInstead of buying exclusives
I can think of a couple things that would make me switch from Steam to EGS. >human store curators>accurate tag/genre system>devs get penalized if they apply inaccurate tags>users can filter any number or combination of tags>early access-like system but limited to 2 years>mandatory refunds if the dev can't deliver the early access promisesBasically exact same library as Steam just allow me to properly filter the shovelware.
>>737129286>The Epic Games Store is almost 10 years oldIts been this shit for so long?
I will now straw grasp for any reason to get anons to hate steam for the rest of this thread.

>>737129286>The Epic Games Store Will Never Be as Good as Steam>And that's a GOOD thing. Here's why:
Let me know when that 12% makes the games cheaper for ME
another "kick the ladder down" article from one of gabe's minions
>>737129286KekGood. Hope all the Epic shills killed themselves years ago
Can you imagine giving a fuck about the opinion of this thing? Good god.
>>737130163>refunds That would fuck over the store owner because refunds cost money. Zero chance of that happening.
>>737129286IGN will never be as good as GameSpy.
Honestly I don't get the competition. It works just fine. Load the client, launch my game, done.Do people actually use steam friends lists and shit? I don't like how steam moved to electron recently, cause it's performance got markedly worse. But I think they're pretty much equal in terms of "I can launch a game from this".Admittedly, I do leave steam on 24/7 and only launch egs when I'm playing an EGS game, maybe that speaks to how I don't even consider it, idk.
Epic had every opportunity on the planet to make their storefront competitive with Steam and they simply didn't. The only thing they tried was bribing people with free games, and even then all people did was collect their free shit and go back to Steam.
>>737130531What i want is to force devs to set up achievable goals for their early access game. Ideally a game that is content complete but needs 12-18 months of polish. No more launching into early access with a concept prototype that would get them laughed out of every pitch meeting. Not something like pic related. A list of promises that would take even a well funded and experienced studio a decade to make.
I don't understand, at the very least you could have copied steamCompeting with steam would take a lot of money but epic had massive "fuck you" money
Timmy genuinely thought taking a little brother route would be his winning strategy lol. Show up, cry that it's unfair the competition gets all the attention, scream and whine that you should be favoured despite putting in zero effort, then after years of failure claim it's not your fault because the other guy had an early start. Pathetic.
>>737130163All that just to say you're never switching.
>>737130486easy there with the jump scares anon..
>>737129286The problem with EGS is there's not really a way to build a community within it. That's what keeps people on Steam and away from EGS or Galaxy.
I’ve gotten like 15 games I wanted for free, and far cry 5 for a fiver. I’d say it’s done it’s job
>>737131020I think their strategy is buying a customer base with free games instead of actually improving the store. That's why nobody buys games there. Their store is just shit.
>>737130223it's 7 year old, but the retard said "almost 10" to make it sound even a bigger failure lol
I don't care, GoG also doesn't match steams feature list. It doesn't have to. I buy the game, I install the game and I play the game. The time I spend on step 1 and 2 is less than 1% of the time I spend on 3. It doesn't matter. Not even a little bit. The whole obsession with EGS is bullshit.
I never understood how companies can be that fucking retarded>massive example of something working by simply providing decent enough service>literally have the work cut out for you to be a potential competitor>don't bother and make an inferior version all the way down>fail>"maybe the problem is that we aren't fucking the customer enough"
>>737131450Because everyone wants to sell data because being a storefront is no longer viable commercially.
>>737131450EGS was obsessed with Steam from the start. Also don't compare GoG to the turd that is EGS. GoG wanted to have its own niche and do something good. Epic is a shitty service brought by a console kike who thought his corpo strategies would give him instant monopoly over PC gaming.
>>737130970Valve should withhold all funds until 2 weeks after the game is actually out. If early access is not supposed to be a way to crowdfund then the devs shouldn't need the funds, right?
>>737130690Steam has a bunch of other useful featuresSteam Reviews if you're checking something out, from actual people who bought the game and I can see how long they played it.Steam Input is also another big draw, I can load up any game and get a working gyro setup from the community in a minuteAll of this is built on top of Steam just to make it better, meanwhile what has Epic done for EGS?
>>737131557this is the most idiotic thing I've read recently, being able to take a cut on transactions is peak renteer economy scamApple does it, Google does it, Steam does it, Timmie wanted in on it, etcthis isn't about data no matter how you look at it, you're just spouting common wisdom slop, like 'data is the new oil', without understanding it
>>737131659I forgot about steam input you're right, that's pretty good. Most games do work without it nowadays and it does cause me issues pretty often though cause it conflicts with me trying to use my controller without it and screeches at me.I haven't read a text based review since like 2010, we have youtube now, why would I EVER want a review that doesn't include footage of the game in action?
>>737130254[Heartwarming news]
>>737131528>I never understood how companies can be that fucking retardedthey're just retarded, it's that simple.
>>737131020I feel like you've brought a lot of baggage into this take
>>737131621In a couple of years AI will be good enough to handle all administrative tasks. Maybe then they'll have the means to actually enforce their rules.
>>737131742A video review doesn't show how long the hack has actually played the game at time of review. I've seen assloads where the video reviewer says things that are blatantly wrong (proving that they barely played the game)on steam reviews, that'd succinctly show up as>30 minutes playtime
>>737131450simplegog does its thing, it never tried to fight steam head on, or make it seems like they're the good guys while steam is the big bad villiantimmy has since day fucking one actively antagonized steam, hiring influencers and "gerrilla marketing" specialists to talk shit about it while introducing the one thing pc gaming never needed: exclusivity bullshitplus trying its best to fuck compatibility with linux systems just because steam supports it, so games from its launcher won't run on the deck, consequences be damnedso yeah, fuck egs and fuck timmy tencentgo eat your rock collection, you baldy fuck
>>737131308Its job is to make money by selling people gamesThey got 5 bucks from you in exchange for almost certainly more than 5 bucks of expense giving away those 15 free games you claimedDoesn't really sound like a job well done to me
unironically if they had just made all games cheaper instead of free it would have worked better.
>>737129945Stop being so antisemitic
>>737131757i love how he even start saying "we tried everything""we just couldn't crack the code"few sentences later there's a list of everything they didn't try at allthey just went lol we'll buy into the ecosystem and PROFIT!fucking hell man
>>737129286it barely even tried. Also, I have to say, GOG galaxy is also shit tier with EGS, since they purposefully removed steam integration and instead sided with Epic.it could've been something.
>>737130254[Gay News] I'm still a gaytarded frogposter
>>737129286It's odd, it looks like it's just a design/engineering issue or lack of features of the store app which you'd think they'd try to fix, but they don'tSo they must have a different idea of what a store should be
Steam will never be dethroned because of the simple fact that it was the first store. They can create a literal, 100% better store than steam and people still won't change because they don't want to lose the games they already have on steam (and they don't want to have 2 stores installed). The only real solution would be for the consumer to be able to transfer their game keys from one store to the other but that would be a licensing nightmare.
>>737131757>314 commentsreally curious to see what they were saying
I like the Steam forums because I'm an old man who absolutely fucking REFUSES to use Discord.
>>737132730the solution is simply time, over time other platforms will be forcedThe more platforms are forced the more the aesthetic advantage of having all your games in one place is eliminated.Same thing that happened with streaming, but you don't pay a subscription, you have to have a different launcher instead.steam may well stay number 1, but it's going to stop being the one
>>737132730Steam cultists are completely insane and won't play free games from any source. Direct download? Emulation? They are mentally incapable. There is no reaching them with anything but a bullet.
What if Epic openly had a 30 day refund policy like the law requires?
>>737132730Steam will be dethroned within a year of Gaben passing. It’s clear from Valve’s glacial development pace and diminishing output of good software that Gabe’s having to tard wrangle his lazy team, and if the company has to continue without him then you can sure they’re going to sell out as quickly as possible. Once the service starts declining, consumers will be more receptive to migrating elsewhere.
>>737133386Literally how the fuck do you propose to "force" people to buy from more than one store when they don't want to?
>>737133472I emulate. I use downloads. I refuse to use Epic Gay Store because I know who Timmy is. Taking his "free games" is like taking candy from a man who raped your dog.
>>737129286>And while it's kind of come a long way since thenThey added a shopping cart in 10 years. Yeah, they came a long way since then.
>>737131757I didn't even know Prime Gaming was a thing until just a few years ago. Even then they basically gave out literal who games through twitch. Granted I do have a decent library of GOG games now due to it.Their own "store" also had an issue with outdated games. The Baldur's Gate 1+2 enhanced I had on it was completely untouched compared to the GOG versions.
>>737133692the same way League of Legends did, they made their own launchersame way timmie did, same way Blizzard does, etcBypassing the Steam cut is eventually worth it, and once you've done it once, you have the infrastructure to do it again.the most likely end state is a few big stores, Steam being the biggest one and many launchers for companies that can afford it
>>737129286It take them almost a decade to say the obvious.
I'll switch to ESG the moment DLsite brings their catalogue over to them, unrestricted, uncensored, everything they have available for Japanese people available for us.
>>737133386>>737134217Funny that you say that, because every publisher under the sun has already ran off to create their own store, failed, and came back to Steam. EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda, Xbox, etc. Even Blizzard conceded and put Overwatch on Steam. i assume you're too young to know this
>>737129286I still have yet to hear a proper reason for why not having a proper search function for years is pro-publisher.
>>737131330>I think their strategy is buying a customer base with free games instead of actually improving the store.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAKOWcs8w54
>>737130254[Uneventful news] Anon is buttmad
>>737134217That has never worked and never will work. You don't solve the problem by persistently ignoring it (as Timmy just found out).>>737132730has it right: The only true way to prevent online stores from becoming pseudo-monopolies is to allow customers to move their libraries to a different store, and there's no way in hell that's going to happen.
