What would you have done differently?
>>
>>737168985
sink gaben's yachts
>>
>>737168985
Not be Tim Sweeney
Never say PC gaming is dying and consoles are the only way forward.
Never claim publishers decide who the lead store will be.
Don't chew on that remote.
>>
>>737168985
make the launcher super lightweight
direct the users to the browser/website for store and all the other knick-knacks and separate the unreal engine dev app/launcher
>>
Offered a flat 15% discount on Elden Ring when it launched, take the financial hit.
Then start adding modules of 3rd party integrated services like
A discord link that games can use to make lobby chats or the launcher can use for friends list video calls and friends list pings for asking which friends want to play a game.
Add in a link to a modding website and some 3rd party launcher like thunderstore so gamers can just mod their games from the launcher
>>
Copied steam 1:1. That's it.
>>
>>737168985
Keep selling on Steam and not be greedy.
>>
>>737168985
Not declare war against Linux like Sweeney did when Windows is clearly a dying platform.
>>
>>737169759
>2 more weeks
I'd become Amish before willingly using lincucks in any capacity.
>>
>>737168985
Not keep games hostage.
Give the customers an incentive to use it, instead of devs/publishers.
At least give it the bare minimum of modern shop QoL stuff.
Have a CEO that isn't a terminally online xitter.
>>
Stop making games and gaming platforms a "social experience"
>>
>>737168985
how about not going woke for starters
>>
>amazon tried to "disrupt" steam for 15+ years and failed hilariously
>tim tries it again anyway
can't fix stupid
>>
Accept the fact that fat fuck gaben has effectively brainwashed the majority of pc gamers into sucking his dick and that all you can really do is make a game platform as opposed to a storefront, e.g. Fornite, because it's going to take a lot of fuckups on the part of valve to undo 15 years of mass gaslighting of the population who genuinely believe retarded shit like "gabe saved pc gaming" and "before steam there was no such thing as sales on pc games" and so on.
>>
>>737168985
>Pressure shareholders into silencing Tim Sweeney before he starts fucking up the company's image
>Appeal to potential customers by making a baseline functional storefront, acknowledging that it isn't a full-on ecosystem like Steam and staying in our lane
>Gradually roll out more social features and workshop support for user-generated content
>Start trying to headhunt developers and studios AFTER building consumer trust

make a real steam competitor, it had no profiles or achievements or any social aspect it was just a shitty launcher. why would anyone pick it over steam?
>>
>>737168985
DRM free.
Linux support.
No mandatory account with phone and email verification, just allow for cryptographic passkeys.
No mandatory launcher, just doubleclick the executable to start the game and allow a program like Lutris to download and update games.

Realistically these are the conditions that need to be fulfilled if you want to compete with Steam. Deviating from this at all means that you are reintroducing problems that most people think have been solved by Valve with none of the necessary trust and sunk costs that Steam has built up over the years.
Even just copying Steam isn't enough, because people don't want just another Steam, just look at how that worked out for streaming services.

I would have never done the exclusivity rugpulls. They're literally the only reason everyone hates Epic.
>>
>>737168985
I wouldn't have decided to make it, to begin with. Also, the all-black theme sucks ass, i hate it.
>>
>>737168985
i wouldn't have bothered with a game store after not only having the game engine market cornered but also an asset store for it ad well as use for special effect in films. use the money you would have wasted on dumb shit like exclusives, free games, hiring shills, acting like a clown, etc. and used it for outreach for developers to make them less retarded so they at least know what the profiler is to fix their fucking games.
>>
>>737170959
>>amazon tried to "disrupt" steam
it is like when someone reveals they have done voodoo against you
would have worked better if they kept it a secret
>>
>>737168985
>What would you have done differently?
-Buy studios instead of game deals
-Copy good features from valve
-Try to have 3-4 banger live service exclusives
-Try to be like Blizz pre Microsoft
-Bundle Fortnite Skins in Store Games
>>
>>737168985
is it still alive?
>>
>>737171943
Yes but all the free games they give now are shit so I don't even bother to claim them
>>
Nothing one could have done to beat it
Steam offers such a complete feature set that you can't make a business out of the few tiny gaps it doesn't cover and it will beat you with seniority
Even gog is unsustainable, it got sold off
>>
>>737168985
I prefer GOG's attempt via humility and pro consumer actions than Timmy's attempt that seemed to be fuelled by jealousy and provoking a console style gang war that doesn't need to exist in the PC market.
>>
>>737169716
Why would people with a steam library jump ship at 1:1? You need added value past that.
>>
>>737171938
-Buy studios instead of game deals
-Try to have 3-4 banger live service exclusives
-Bundle Fortnite Skins in Store Games
they've literally done all these
>>
>>737172514
>humility
You mean begging for donations? I doubt that's a viable business model.
>>
>>737171198
>Pressure shareholders
Epic is a private company.
>>
>>737172561
It's what fetish artists on patreon do and they're rolling in dosh.
>>
>>737172598
People are lot more prepared to be patron to an individual artist than they are to donate to a profit motivated publicly traded multinational corporation.
>>
>>737171198
>Gradually roll out more social features and workshop support for user-generated content
Workshop only truly works as a concept if you have the market dominance/power Steam has
It would only make sense for EGS perma-exclusives, as if a game launches on both no one's going to want to upload mods to the Epic workshop, if a game is timed exclusive mods are going to gravitate to Steam the second the Steam version drops
>>
>>737172561
No, I just mean not swinging at the other people in the same race that you are.
>>
>>737168985
>Don't do exclusives
>Constantly add features
>Stop the free game giveaways after 2 years so you don't create a userbase of leeches
>Do the Fortnite skin-with-a-purchase promo from day 1 when it was at its peak instead of 7 fucking years later when it's on the decline
>Put a muzzle on Tim Sweeney so he can't make stupid Twitter posts
>>
>>737168985
Keep selling on Steam as a publisher. They could have probably gotten away with a ton of crap if Tim didn't deliberately go out of his way to inconvenience gamers in the first place.
>>
>>737172521
Of course, but copying steam is just the first step. The Epic Games Launcher has such a terrible UI.
>>
>>737168985
Not create it.
>>
>>737168985
Stop tim sweeney from using twitter, his tweets have been devastating to EGS
Don't make anything exclusive except fortnite, but putting fortnite on steam would be a power play move if done right
Require that games sold on EGS have to be DRM free
Make the store less shit and don't be a hipster about it, steam already paved the way
Publish games that don't suck
Port some good old ass games to PC that are stuck on old consoles, buy the IP rights if you have to
End the weekly free game giveaway bullshit after GTA5, they will never top that one and every giveaway after that is just training people to not buy shit
Fellate the customer like your life depends on it, because it does

It's too late for them now however
>>
>>737171938
Not spending years implementing a simple shopping cart is of course also an idea..
>>
>>737168985
Make a Fortnite-integrated gaming focused social media service first, then add third party games to it gradually. Your friends list, achievements, review system, cloud saves, mod sharing etc all need to be ready for use and familiar to your user base via free-to-play titles like Fortnite before they ever spend a dime on actual game purchases.
Make it entirely browser-based, not a separate app on your PC. Pressure Google into making new web standards to facilitate this, the grip Chrome has over desktop web browsers makes this possible. Use this to push into the mobile gaming space instead of the dumb shit Tim actually did.
Don't say a fucking word publicly about developer fees unless you're willing to push those savings on to the consumer.
>>
>>737168985
they hired a creator of fucking steamspy and still couldnt copy even the basic features. they got what they deserved
>>
>>737168985
Nothing. Steam is simply too big, convenient and popular to compete with.
>>
>>737177396
Galyonkin was a fucking retard who initially didn't even want to let games go on sale and thought EGS would be a boutique store.

The current guy running EGS (Steve Allison) isn't much better, but at least he knows that their client is trash and they're (very, very slowly) working on improving it.
>>
>>737169716
This and work to improve it and become better
>>
>>737177541
yeah I know, my point was more like that they had an advantage of knowing what worked and what didnt for steam but they did literally nothing with it
>>
put a hit out on Lord Gaben
>>
>>737168985
I would have done government lobbying to get Steam closed / its commercial license revoked.
>>
>>737168985
Make the store really good to use first, before I try to spend all my money on buying exclusives.
