There's literally 0 reason to own a "retro PC" if you're not a collector. You can play all the old games on your current setup. Old games often didn't even work without patches.>But Win98Windows or Linux with 9x theme and disabled AA for text>but DOSDosbox-x or Staging
>>737173704I can't tell you if you don't give me the specs
If I have to play something that that would probably be NetHack, maybe The Ur-Quan Masters (Star Control 2), Heroes of Might and Magic 3, etc. That being said, my current setup is better so why would I? Like, I could contemplate e.g. installing some early-2000s Linux distribution (I'm guessing from 48x CD d rive it's circa 2000), OS/2 or Plan 9 to (re)acquaint myself with how those systems worked with contemporary devices (how long it takes to install from disks, that sort of thing) and maybe in course of that exploration also launch a game or two, but I can already play at least 99.99% of games of that era.

>>737175213Not OP, but what's so hard to understand? It's not about the convenience or practicality, we just want to experience old games the way we remember them.

>>737175213Glide emulation is soulless
>>737177512Because what most people remember are the games, the OS aesthetic and mood (things you can emulate), not the 30mins long tinkering to make shit work. Also because a lot of people think they need old PCs for old games.

>>737176613In cases like sega saturn etc yes.But PCs were always a hodgepodge of different components. If anything, something like dosbox or 86box have more chance of running games than a real machine.

>>737173905It's your CPUs clock speed that affects how fast the game runs, because programmers tied the game logic to it.
>>737179278Xcom was one of those games where the drive speed would affect the core game calculations itself. It wasn't core speed. Both my mate and I had the same cores but he had an 8x speed drive and the game ran at super speed for him but not me.

>>737180236Objectively it still gives worse experience than nu tech for old games. I often watch this Dosgamert guy and half the games he tries on old setup don't work.
