I liked it a lot. I do think it's too similar to the original still, unlike Remake2 which is a vastly different game from the original but I digress, OG-RE4 was such a landmark game when it comes to TPS that it's kinda hard not to be similar to it.

No. I played the original all the way through like a fiend. I put the remake down right at reaching the island because I knew it wasn't going to get any better at that point. It's just a bland/safe modernization and no masterpiece. Not even close.

The problem is RE4 is one of those "best game ever" games that develop an annoying fanbase. As a result the remake gets particular scorn because its existence challenges the narrative that the original is perfect, since it shouldn't be possible to improve on it in any way. For this reason you'll even have people go as far as insist the original is "better in every way" even though that's an absolute that's easy to challenge.
