Giygas fucked off after Mother 1 and then his mental and physical condition deteriorated to the point he had to be restrained in the devil's machine to somewhat reel in the psychic damage he was hurling all over the universe, and whatever flashes of lucidity he has simply amplifies his despair.
He basically went from really powerful alien to outer god, going mad, getting the prophecy where he'll be killed by Ness and co, destroying the future then traveling back in time to where the party fights him at the end of Earthbound.
