It does happen, but it’s really rare. But in single player, you can set your own limitations and challenge yourself the entire time. >>737227145Arch. I think Pop took a stand against the age verification shit.
>>737213454Pick literally any other distro, Ubuntu is a huge noob trap that sucks ass and is broken for most tasks that is more complicated than browsing the web or doing school work. The 2 year release schedule is particularly bad now because the "cutting edge" has matured to the point where you'll have to wait up to two years for fixes that everyone else gets a week or a month after its made, you seldom get botched patches (unless your running Arch) because all rolling distros now stagger most fixes by a week to a month so that shit has a chance to get fixed before it reaches the general public. Ubuntus own repos are also just bad and badly maintained so that's another thing you have to deal with if you want to switch to Ubuntu. If you really want to get something that is tangential to Ubuntu then just install Mint because at least that distro works out of the box more often then not and is a bit easier to handle if shit breaks. If you are tech savy enough to know how to install a distro without consulting a guide and have at least a little bit of patience then I'd recommend something like Fedora or one of the distros based on it since it's essentially just a "newbie" distro with more control over stuff. Once you feel comfortable with Linux then you can go to something like Arch if you really like to tinker with tech.If you have an Nvidia card then just save yourself the headache and get Bazzite if you only wanna play vidya or Pop!OS if you want to have a more "mature" distro with more general use stuff pre-installed.In my opinion, stay away from every desktop environment that isn't KDE Plasma if you are new to Linux, Plasma is an almost 1-to-1 copy of W10 looks wise and have 90% of the same functionality but without the bullshit stuff that comes pre-installed on W10/11.
>>737227565>Plasma is an almost 1-to-1 copy of W10It's significantly better than W10. It's closer to W11 if W11 was functional and let you customize it. But it's miles ahead of both.

Benefit of gaming on Linux is the lack of bloatware bogging down your system, search on Windows 11 alone is 180-300+ mb on ram and a percentage of processing running in the background as well and that's just one program, with certain Linux distros you can basically run it bear bones on drivers and the colonel
OK faggots since you're here and considering switching to Linux and you're paralyzed by the choice of all the distros let me break it down for you.You only need to consider 3 parents.>Arch - Rolling release, always uses the latest stuff>Debian - Long term support, stable, always behind>Fedora - Very up to date, but not like arch.Every single distro worth a damn is built from one of these. Ignore everything else. These are the only parents that matter. For gaming, you need the latest drivers. Debian is a poor base for this because of how long it takes to get updates. Ignore any debian based distro for gaming unless you're a drooling retard. If so, go with Pop!OS or Linux Mint.Fedora is good if you think you're a bit retarded. Some options are Nobara, Bazzite (if you're extremely retarded) or just straight Fedora if you want to use it as a workstation too.For Arch, CachyOS is idiot-proof in terms of installing, and arguably the best gaming OS. But because it's always using the latest stuff, sometimes things might break. Pick it if you're less retarded than most people. If you think that's too hard, EndeavourOS is a good middleground for arch based distros. And finally, if you love to tinker, straight Arch. It has an archinstall script that automates the autism for you. But it's still not as pretty or easy as Endeavour or Cachy. Arch is the total freedom, build your own OS option.Whichever one you choose, get KDE Plasma, It is the best desktop environment out there, and by a lot. You can customize it to look like windows or mac or something else entirely. Start here. You can always change at any time and go for GNOME if you hate yourself or Hyprland if you want something offered nowhere else and want to basically only use your keyboard. To recap:Pop, Mint or Bazzite if you're brain damaged. Nobara or Fedora if you're normal.Cachy or Endeavour if you're technically mindedArch if you're autistic.

>>737228279I'm not sure if recommending PopOS is still a good idea, or whether it just keeps getting recommended because people recommended it in the past.CachyOS also isn't more idiot-proof than Arch, like most Linux distros it's just proofed against a different type of idiot, since it can potentially add some additional troubleshooting. I just need Nvidia to fix the motherfucking dx12 regression. I have been screaming about this for probably a year or more, and it still isn't fixed. >>737283776Once the Steam VR is out ARM will get full proton support.
>>737284109CrossOver doesn't use Proton directly, it uses Wine (which Proton also uses). However, CrossOver has some different obstacles it needs to deal with; most notably, Apple Silicon doesn't have 32-bit ARM hardware which complicates emulating 32-bit x86 games with good performance. It can be done - Windows 11 comes with an emulator called Prism that does it really well, and you can actually get great performance on a lot of older Windows games in a Windows 11 ARM VM on a Mac, where CrossOver would give you terrible performance. But CrossOver doesn't have that kind of thing yet. It's also questionable as to whether they'd integrate that kind of translation into base Wine, given that it's an Apple-specific problem that wouldn't be relevant to Linux running on non-Apple ARM64. So the CrossOver devs might just try to implement it in their own product. They are the ones doing most of the development of Wine, so they probably have the know-how, the question is whether there's demand for it; if people just want to play newer games that don't get Mac releases but are 64-bit anyways, then no point trying to get old games to run on CrossOver, you can play stuff like Satisfactory or Trepang2 via CrossOver just fine as it is.

>>737212845I'm playing half life 1 on it because valve screwed over the mac userbase worse than the artifact fanbase and one day they will pay for their crimes
>>737285385it'll never be fully open because nvidia considers the software end of their GPUs to be the real product you pay for. CUDA alone is worth literally trillions (until the AI bubble pops). with AMD and intel the driver software is just the thing that makes the product work, plus they were already doing huge amounts of linux kernel work that benefits desktop users so fuck it why not, may as well make the linux drivers easy to use and distribute.nvidia trying to dictate the entire linux desktop ecosystem with shit like eglstreams was just pure hubris though. in hindsight it's funny that it took them literal YEARS to cave on this even though literally no one else had any reason to do things their way
