Is it time for the resurgence of the RTS Ubermensch?
>>737224429No
>>737224429>TW40k releasing next yeari'm so ready why did this take so fucking long bros
>>737225209it's dawn of war but worse
>>737225209They needed to make a new game engine for it.
>>737224429Total war is the only acceptable rts model. Spamming build unit as fast as possible to the point it becomes some Korean bugsport is retarded and no fun. Having to strategically organize and maneuver and then finally controlling the battle realtime with whatever you were able to organize beforehand is a thousand times more fun.
>aoe2i wish they'd buff handcannoneers
>>737225261Can't possibly be worse than DoW4. DoW4 looks floaty and has awful sound design.
>>737224429Neb is by no means a replacement for homeworld, even if its fine as its own thing.
>>737225325Anon, most RTS aren't korean bug man click fests. You can get by with most NOT doing that obsessive clicking and still do fine. What the ultra diamond grandmaster lord league players are a tiny fraction of the total playerbase in any game.
>>737225325To be fair, one needs to have discipline and a certain amount of IQ to make and follow build orders, also to adapt when the BO gets countered. BOs are highly similar to chess openings and people condescending on it shows they lack the acumen to appreciate the skill involved in it.
>>737225367>Neb is by no means a replacement for homeworldI agree. Nebuchadnezzar is a city builder.
>>737225337No
>>737225853:(
Dust Front dude also posted a new video recently so the project is still alive at least.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQthkIpbXcg

>>737225676Is this as good as the Impressions Games city builders? Also, has anybody played Tlatoani? Is it decent at least?
>>737226829I wonder what our resident mesoamerican buff thinks about this.
>>737225209CA was trying hard to break away from Total War with HYENAS because modern CA absolutely hates TW and being the "TW"company. After that shit show crashed and burned, SEGA came down on them hard and made sure that they ironically remain the TW (and Alien Isolation) company from now on.
>>737226825Play xenonauts 2 instead.
>>737225209>>737224429Get that shit out of here Total war isn't a real rts, it's for lazy fags
>>737226829Aztecs look broken af especially the infinite mutant beast summoning shit.
>>737224429the problem with RTS is people want to compete with sc2 esports instead of trying to make cool campaigns and giving out map editors with the game.
>>737227193It's clear that neither DORF nor dust front nor any of the Age of games try to be Sc2 and the anticipation/success of these games speaks volumes.
>>737226829>announce 2 new civs for the remaster>outright say the first one is a completely remade Chinese, second kept secret>everybody wanted Aztecs / something adjacent>turns out to be Japanese>great civ but not what the people wanted>massive outcry>devs make Aztecs
>>737227119I don't know but the Aztec goddesses are very sexo
>>737225512Chess sucks because it has openings and they define too much of the game. Go is a much better game because the game blows wide open after a large variety of openings.
>>737227135You'd think they'd try to break away from being the "TW company" with a smaller budgeted game so if it failed, it wouldn't kill the company. You know, a sane option.
>>737225325Here you can see one of the main reasons why RTS declined. Most people didn't actually want to play an RTS game but a specific subset of it, in this case an RTT
>>737228078I mean they have made a bunch of other stuff, with Alien Isolation probably being the most prominent non-TW game, but they also fired the whole team after the game released.
>all those playtests for Dawn of War 4>every single one is an email telling me I haven't been one of the people selected to play itI am butthurt.
>>737225358dow4 looks like a mobile game that got ported to pc
>>737228426There's a lot you could do to make actual Real Time Strategy less retarded, but taking all of the Strategy out of it definitely isn't it.
>>737224429>>AoE2, AoE4 and AoM still getting DLCsProbably the biggest surprise. I guess the campaign crowd is actually buying shit.
>>737227109I don't think anything is AS good as those, but it's blatantly inspired.
>>737227193no. the "problem" is you have different people wanting different things out of the genre. that's why you'll never again get some all-encompassing goty that checks all the points for everyone. opinions have stratified to such a degree you got sub-genres catering to specific wants.
>>737228574You're not missing much. Trust me.
>>737228918it's astonishing to me how well that 2d art has aged. especially the more stylized zeus/poseidon and emperor.

>>737229292How did The Settlers just die?
>>737229296meant for >>737228887
>>737229215Yea. Each faction dlc has a dozen of campaign missions. Hell even the DLCs of single new gods have a mission for them. The devs know that campaign sells.
>>737229296>Baldwin & Bullseye DLC comes out in two days
>>737229292They released more and more, pushing mtx and other bullthit into it.
>>737229346The transition to 3D hasn't been kind to it like it hadn't been for many beloved RTS games.
>>737229292>amazon faction with female warriors and male slavesThis game was based beyond reason.
>>737224429I remember the weird era when we got some RTS, but they were sadly just uninspired rehashes. Even strangely some managed to get decent budget.

>>737229408Fucking ubisoft.
>>737229802yeah but then i have to talk my friends into installing a game you can't buy anymore, modding it, and into installing Hamachi or GameRanger so we can play together.
>>737229296>>737229381Yep I'll be buying that
>>737229716This genre must die
>>737229654>>737229802I just want it actually 60fps.
>>737224429>be top 5% aoe2 player>try out other rts games>skills dont translate over at all and lose motivation to playhow do i fix this?
>>737230083Do.
>>737229408the spiritual successor to settlers is Pioneers of Pagonia
>>737229215Yes. "We want the e-sports crowd" was always a big industry cope because it's easier to just release balance patches than actual new content. Amusingly enough, this is good use of DLC as delivery method versus conventional expansions because you can just release one new faction and ~10 mission campaign to satisfy most of your players.
>>737229215I think the problem is that a lot of games are being made as multiplayer focused initially. Like you already need a sizeable playerbase and a good way to learn the game through single player content first for multiplayer to not die like instantly.
>>737229654EA would have to renew their licensing for the old games, Return of the King and others are in the same spot
>>737229346>the settlersman that reminds me>cultures>the nation>alien nation
>>737230201Just started playing this and realised how bad I am after not playing a Settler game past 4.
>>737229654Second was a better game, but I still prefer BfME1. Some of the best use of license out there.
>>737230094wait, is it actually locked to 30FPS on PC? i only ever played on Xbox 360.
>>737224429>40kslop>Some game that's been around forever already Dorf rts looks cool but I'll believe in it when I sees a release date.
>>737230094Sage Meta Tool should work I think
>>737225492You're trying to explain it to someone who's only experience with rts is looking it up on yt and clicking on the first result.
>>737230397
>>737230476Yeah, animations, everything.
>>737224429>nebulous fleet command coming in to replace homeworldlolThe dev already gave up on the dynamic campaign mode and caters 100% to the 13 people still playing pvp. It has the slowest space combat of any game I've ever played. It's neat but it's nowhere near a replacement for anything.
>>737230907speaking of which, why was proper 3d freedom never used in any space rts games? homeworld is the sole real example.
>>737227374>its papa lotlis this real lol
>>737230951Because it's hard to get right. Nebulous at launch was riddled with camera jank because the dev couldn't anticipate all the various ways people would try to line things up correctly. Most studios would rather not even bother and will just make it a 2d plane with a bit of manual elevation changing.
how do I into total war
>>737230863wow, i did not know that. that's dark.>>737230397was the first game also locked to 30FPS?
>>737231125To this day I like Shogun 2, it's just comfy.I would not call it an RTS tho.
>>737225676mmm ziggurats...
>>737231125If not Warhammer>Learn the basics of formation based warfare and its tactics, google hammer & anvil and go from there, morale is everythingIf Warhammer>Morale doesn't exist here, make your tactics about how to best kill the enemy army with the least amount of damage done to yours

>>737230951>mfw HW3 couldn't even get formations right
>>737231793To be far no one with actual budget is even trying anymore. At best you get DLC for existing games and remakes.
>>737231832Neither could the remasters
I saw this on /vst/ so I'm gonna ask here>Starship Troopers: Terran Command>Aliens: Dark Descent>Terminator: Dark Fate: DefianceWhat's with the recent trend of licensed strategy IP games being good?
>>737230907Don't you know? Campaign mode is releasing soon.https://youtube.com/watch?v=D4BOaaB9I1Q
>>737231958because no one else is even trying. those are just decent games that would realistically get swept aside if they had to go against GOOD rts of old.
>>737231865Didn't a AA studio make a C&C clone which failed to meet expectations? They're trying but they don't understand what made the OGs great.
hey guys Peter here hehe :Dremember that if we ever talk about strategy games we cant forget classics like Black and White, Populous and Dungeon Keeper!also make sure you check out my next STRATEGY God Game MASTERS OF ALBION, OUT IN EARLY ACCESS NEXT WEEKBe ready to be amazed!

Godsworn is pretty alright, in early access and only made by two devs. coop with ai is a bit of a meme sometimes
>>737232641peter molyneux more like peter molypoo
>>737230201damnthats a good looking game from the steam pictures
>>737234169Shut your goddamn mouth. He's a saint.
>>737233652I don't like the aesthetics.
>>737232069That's not the same thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evdY2V8WVk0
>>737235892Well if it gets more people playing the game, they'll pivot towards more single player content. Let your wallets do the talking.
>>737232124Which one? Tempest rising? I enjoyed that one quite a bit. But I enjoy playing trough the campaign and thats it. It did not have any extra pve content and I don't give a fuck about pvp.
>>737228950>you have different people who want different things from the genreSomehow this problem never affected shooting games, or racing games, or the ever expansive rpg. Widening the genre would make one presume that it would keep the genre alive as it now caters to a wider variety of people looking to play a specific kind of rts.
>>737227781As someone said, Chess simulates tactics while Go simulates strategy.
>>737236593Tempest rising was C&C without the aspects that made C&C stand out.
>>737237260Like what? It felt really close to the OGs to me, the only thing that I could pick out that made it different is that units had abilities or effects. Where older games were a lot more vanilla in their design.
>>737237260I just bought that game it better not be shit
>>737237660It lacked neat visuals wherein it was easy to tell units and environment apart, it doesnt have soulful FMVs and the lifeless cutscenes fail to embody the spirit of C&C, the story is also a shameless rehash.
>>737227135some devs really need to accept that they're only good at one thing and stick to it
>>737237824I mean, I get why they did not do acted scenes. And yeah, some of the visuals were lacking, but stuff like drones were pretty well executed. I would love more tesla shit, or railguns however.
>>737229823Ubisoft bought and killed all my favourite gameswe should be legally allowed to kill ubisoft ceos
>>737237850It's not that easy. Dev burn out is real.
>>737224429don't forget dust front, empire eternal and sanctuary shattered sun anon
>>737237921It only just got super weapons and the super units range from "big artillery" and "ball". Most of its units I would put as functional but don't really stand out that much, same for many of the unit voice lines. You're not getting any "FLAAAAME TANK" or even something as basic an ear worm like "Missile squad ready!"It's gameplay is fine, but there's a lot of missing charm that made the CnC games memorable.
>>737238098>It only just got super weaponsWhat about the third faction? Did they release it?
>>737238098I think thats pretty fair as far as criticism goes. I don't think I could quote a single unit from it. Meanwhile shit like "rubber boots in motion" lives rent free in my head.
HOLY FUCK JUST STOP CHANGING THE GAMEPLAY
>>737227135What I find funny is that CA burned through all of their Warhammer profit on Hyenas and SEGA let Relic go because of it.Imagine wasting millions and the other company that just exists in the background gets cut instead of you.
>>737238620If I were working at Relic, I'd be pissed. Work hard on a largely successful RTS series, but forced to rush out the final expansion to the second game, that when you finally get to the 3rd game, you're told to make it into some kind of MOBA style RTS hybrid game and nobody likes it.
>>737232993You have it backwards, at least as far as Grey Goo goes. That game is good looking, especially for its time. They were also kind of cooking when it came to faction design, the three sides were very different from one another and Goo in particular was very unique. Once you get past that though the actual technical design of the game is what lets it down.>Incredibly sluggish pace, most units are very slow as is economy with slow unit production speeds, research and resource collection>Half assed campaign, only five missions per faction giving you not enough time to get to grips with new units and faction mechanics before the difficulty ratchets up. Story feels very rushed>Mission difficulty feels insanely random, start up a new mission and it's a coinflip as to whether the enemy AI will rush you immediately or passively hang back, sometimes it feels like you need to be everywhere on the map but your units are too damn slow>Final campaign ends on a sequel / expansion hook but the game sold like shit so it never manifests. Final endgame big bad faction gets dropped as a free update with no story content to go with themCould have genuinely been a great game but it just has too many issues that compound into an unfun experience. If the game had a less sluggish pace and they doubled the number of campaign missions they might have done well enough to the point where they could have gotten their expansion and have the game feel complete.
>>737238741I was thinking about their 8 bit army games when I was writing that.
>>737238878Haven't played those but they do kind of look like the complete opposite of Grey Goo in terms of game design. Are they fun?
>>737224429Eugen systems already saved RTS genre.

>>737239037Eugen perfected it with RUSE. Literally better than World in Conflict, and now they've become DLC merchants. Not as bad as Paradox, but they're getting there.
>>737240951I bought the entire premium edition for something around $30. Quite the steal tbfqh.
>>737240817Rise of the BBC posters
>>737228918Emperor would be so hecking kino if it wasn't for the retarded ancestors.
>>737245690Ancestors are nothing. Just have a surplus of pottery to smash regularly. It's the Fengshui system that drives me up the wall.
>>737237020Because RTS player base is infinitely smaller. Too much fragmentation actively hurts it.
>>737245757It's the whole pottery smashing mechanic that really fucks with me. I could live with it with some basic automation, but now it's just forced tedium. The feng Shui is refreshing after having played C3 and Pharaoh to death, even if it has its problems.
>>737237020>>737245872The bigger issue is that RTS players don't like to move on to newer RTS games since their skill doesnt exactly translate to new games unlike shooters.
>>737247417RTS skills do translate to other RTS's thougheverbeitered.
>>737248790Why don't SC2 pros ever move on then?
>>737229075That looks like complete ass. Especially the UI
>>737250975fr fr we need minimalist UI which look similar to all the other games currently in the market. Stylism is for uncshit
>>737250030Because it's their job to play the same game over and over again?? It's like saying why don't LoL pros ever play DotA 2 or some shit
>>737251246Stylism is good but bad styles are bad. See how Atlus is the only one doing it right for JRPGs and how everyone else copying it falls short.
>>737251458Making stylistic UI for RTS games is no easy task.
