Total war is the only acceptable rts model. Spamming build unit as fast as possible to the point it becomes some Korean bugsport is retarded and no fun. Having to strategically organize and maneuver and then finally controlling the battle realtime with whatever you were able to organize beforehand is a thousand times more fun.

Yes. "We want the e-sports crowd" was always a big industry cope because it's easier to just release balance patches than actual new content. Amusingly enough, this is good use of DLC as delivery method versus conventional expansions because you can just release one new faction and ~10 mission campaign to satisfy most of your players.

The dev already gave up on the dynamic campaign mode and caters 100% to the 13 people still playing pvp. It has the slowest space combat of any game I've ever played. It's neat but it's nowhere near a replacement for anything.

Because it's hard to get right. Nebulous at launch was riddled with camera jank because the dev couldn't anticipate all the various ways people would try to line things up correctly. Most studios would rather not even bother and will just make it a 2d plane with a bit of manual elevation changing.

It only just got super weapons and the super units range from "big artillery" and "ball". Most of its units I would put as functional but don't really stand out that much, same for many of the unit voice lines. You're not getting any "FLAAAAME TANK" or even something as basic an ear worm like "Missile squad ready!"

It's gameplay is fine, but there's a lot of missing charm that made the CnC games memorable.

If I were working at Relic, I'd be pissed. Work hard on a largely successful RTS series, but forced to rush out the final expansion to the second game, that when you finally get to the 3rd game, you're told to make it into some kind of MOBA style RTS hybrid game and nobody likes it.

You have it backwards, at least as far as Grey Goo goes. That game is good looking, especially for its time. They were also kind of cooking when it came to faction design, the three sides were very different from one another and Goo in particular was very unique. Once you get past that though the actual technical design of the game is what lets it down.

Could have genuinely been a great game but it just has too many issues that compound into an unfun experience. If the game had a less sluggish pace and they doubled the number of campaign missions they might have done well enough to the point where they could have gotten their expansion and have the game feel complete.
