maybe once a year I try playing this game because I know people consider it to be really good but I just wander around aimlessly and nothing happens until I get eaten by something

I believe wandering around is the way to enjoy the game. The main objective in the first half of the game is finding the actual main objective, then in second half following it. If you don't like wandering around and don't enjoy simple exploration then it's over.
I can bring up analogy to people in real life who went sailing into unknown because they could but it sounds a bit corny

That really is kind of what you have to do.
Some people click with it immediately but rain world at it's core is about the little interactions that add joy to the exploration. So some people just need that initial "oh okay I get it now" moment before you get hooked.
>>737241007
I have mixed feelings. It's buy Joar who's behind all the art and style and feel of the original rain world, but having it be so focused on chaotic multiplayer makes it hard to take in. I had a bunch of fun kicking people off bridges going at 200mph but I feel like I already got my fill of it. I hope the single player component has a lot more meat to it.

made me realize how much the transitional parts of each region are.
>near the gate to a new region
>environment gradually (or sharply) changes to the new area's aesthetic/theme
>enter the gate, trepidation mounting
>cautiously wander in
>new music track plays as you try to find the next shelter to safely explore from
all missing when you just teleport into the middle of the region without any context around it
also bitter aerie sucked ass as a modded region and it sucks ass here split into 4.
but i appreciate that it builds new ideas instead of just fixating on the gay iterator shit that was barely in the base game.

Yeah that was one of my biggest issues with it too. I'm hesitant to progress on a path when I know that if I go through it I'm going to have to loop around an like three entire fucking dimensions just to get back. Cold Storage in particular was bad about this and feels downright impossible to traverse without the float.

I wish they would stop updating it so we can go back to playing vanilla with modded regions in peace.
Overpowered ability renders the entire campaign mindnumbing, the cool modded regions they used to build it got ruined by being chopped up into tiny pieces ruining all sense of flow.
And the new lore is so in your face ooooooooOOOooooOOOo myserious metaphysical stuff, which was mostly confined to small moments and the ending in the original for a good reason just really ruins the grounded "world" feel of the rain world experience.
I don't downright hate it, but the enjoyment I get out of it is the same I get from playing rain world in general. Downpour atleast was able to lean on the construction of the original but the watcher is just so ramshackle, rushed and unpolished.
It has some good vibes here and there, and I like that the games toolkit is basically out of the blackbox so we get actual new creatures (albiet very few) and visually the game just does things it couldnt before. But I have to ask myself if it was worth it. They put more effort into selling fucking merch than the actual game now. And the constant hotfixes do nothing for anythone except fuck up our modlists.

The worst part is I love the concept of "what if rain world but LSD dream simulator just fucking end up in random wacky places spirital dream nonsense". But slapping a few modded regions together and not even polishing them up properly really just isn't how you do that at all. They needed to build proper mini regions instead of splitting up Aether Ridge into 6 fucking pieces that are still too big for the concept.
>>737242005
Cold Storage wasn't even finished in the original mod it's from and it's barely changed. They also nerfed most of the challenging platforming even though the watcher can fly later in the DLC. They also ripped out al the paths that actually let you leave the fucking place when you just want out.
>>

>made me realize how much the transitional parts of each region are.

>>
>>737241589
They basically are making Rain World 2. They said they're moving away from the DLC expansion model and onto standalone stuff. And that we'll get information "soon"
They said the original story is finished with Watcher, so what they do from here is anyone's guess.

>bitter aerie sucked ass
you mean Aether Ridge? It was meant for hardcore players who know advanced movement and the layout of it made sense when it wasn't cracked into pieces like in dlc. I like the palette of it but visually the design of rooms is terrible.
It's a shame both dlcs are made by modders, original game's rooms were all made by 1 dude and I loved his style. Thats why I don't play modded regions, they all are very different to what I like in RWs design
>>
>>737242294
>you mean Aether Ridge?
i do, yes. couldn't remember the original name, i only played it when it first came out. it was ass because the whole fucking thing was covered in tiny micro steps and awkward geometry that made just walking through the damn thing a chore. wasn't a fan of its gimmicks either.

>It's a shame both dlcs are made by modders, original game's rooms were all made by 1 dude and I loved his style. Thats why I don't play modded regions, they all are very different to what I like in RWs design
some of my favorite regions are modded, but yes, i agree. the base game regions have consistent idiosyncracies to them, and all have pretty disitinct landmarks and variations within each region. a fair few modded regions boil down to just variations on one theme, without really exploring it. aether ridge being one particularly awful example of this. but thankfully they aren't all like that. the other modded regions that made it into the watcher are better examples, though still a bit annoying to traverse themselves.
>>
>>737241007
idk if its fun or not but the visuals are so ugly, which is weird considering rain world is one of the most beautiful games ever made. the low poly models with low res textures look like shit in an hd resolution. they need to drastically reduce the resolution it runs in to give it that crunchy ps1 look.
>>
>>737242553
>some of my favorite regions are modded
any recommendations?
>>
>>737242053
I do think there is something kind of cool about suddenly appearing in a new region and having to get your bearings, but it's just so awful for navigating the world map as a whole. You can't possibly know where regions are in relation to each other because it doesn't make sense by design. Even after playing through Watcher I could not tell you how to reach any given region, but after playing Survivor once I could easily reach any region by picking the rough direction I knew it was in and walking.
>>
>>737242239
Honestly feels really snobbish.
Both DLC's were basically a collection of fan works, the main dev is working on his new multiplayer combat racer. So what we just got a bunch of modders making their own rain world with blackjack and hookers? Can they atleast finish porting their own mods to the main game or are we just never getting Aether Ridge 2.0 now because it got ruined by the watcher?
>>737242294
Aether Ridge kind of suffers from being the first work of its scale. But I still think the way the modder managed to weave all the subregions together and subtly direct you through a path that terminates at the bottom leading you towards a karma gate is very impressive and has a good understanding of region flow. (Which is why it sucks so much ass in the DLC)
I think there are plenty of good ones though, Scorched District and Oceanic Aquaduct probably being my favourites. Undersea while rough around the edges also really captures that sense of exploration from early rain world for me.
>>
>>737242617
badlands and the root were my favorites, but they're pretty ancient by RW region standards.
>>
>>737242756
>So what we just got a bunch of modders making their own rain world with blackjack and hookers?
Pretty much been the case since Downpour. One of the original devs oversees it but judging by what happened with Watcher these guys have full freedom to fuck things up
>>
>>737242553
I do love the expansions even with their flaws, but my main issue with them in general is that they have areas that are so overly decorated with foliage and backgrounds that look like platforms that make it hard to tell what exactly is traversable at a glance. You have a problem if I feel the need to open a map just to be able to tell what I can jump onto.
>>
>>737241591
Probably could have been a lot better if the publisher didn't push for it to release as early as it did, half of the DLC was missing at launch
It's been 1+ year since release and they were STILL recently fixing basic stuff like a softlock in the true ending or portals not showing up on the map when hibernating

Downpour was atleast still a mod of the main game and constrained by it. Any complaints with the lore aside I really enjoyed additions like Metropolis and I found Gourmand and Artificer to atleast be fun modifiers to the base gameplay. Both inferior to hunter but still a fun romp.
Watcher tries to do it's own thing but was just completely rushed and sloppy and built out of the scraps of other mods from the base up.
How the fuck are they going to build something new from the base up? They took a bunch of complete works for the watcher and still somehow managed to make every part come out unfinished. It's almost impressive.
As far as building a single region (as in full regions not the shitty mini ones in the watcher) goes I won't fault them. I think the full version of stormy coast and coral caves are cool.
But their ability to coordiante and put together a full product is beyond abhorrent.
>>737243309
The DLC didnt even have the main ending or any of it's lore pearls on release. It was also missing whole creatures and some of the best regions namely pillar grove Even with all the content in it still feels unfinished though.
>>
>>737243309
With the 1.5 patch they added 2 endings (including the true ending), several regions, new creatures (that don't spawn in if you use an old save, just for your awareness), some new mechanics and a new NPC tied to the new endings, also they did a pass on visuals
More recently, they did another pass on visuals and added a new mechanic related to void worms iirc, also support for safari mode

That one is one of my most hated regions. Absolute retardation, there was a

I hope the full version of Fetid Glen isn't abandoned, I really wanted to see what Kaeporo had intended with it as a full region when it was being made for downpour. It's so unreasonably dank, I love it.

thats funny, exterior is one of my favourite areas. Climbing Moon's walls and legs in Downpour was kino, the underhang section is even better than one in 5P

If I could do anything I think I would shrink myself to the size of a slugcat. I’d leave the world of men behind me forever, and live amongst the slugcats. And I would bring technology and art to those uncultured swine, and I would build tiny tools for their slugcat hands made from toothpicks and marshmallows. And I would be their King... nay... their Prince! Gilderoy the Slugcat Prince! Ruling from my grand castle inches high, carved from the finest popcorn plant. And there I would dwell with my three slugcat wives, and my twelve slugcat concubines. Oh, ho, ho, ho, ho! Oh, but the wars we’d have with the scavengers... terrible. Just terrible. Those metal slugcat warriors, the atrocities they’ve seen. Yes, that is my dream…

the reveal in watcher is retarded and something devs intentionally went away from when making original game:
>I second everything James wrote above, but I'll try to give my angle. Yep, we have thought about more recognizable architecture, but we gravitated away from it. For a few reasons, the main one definitely being that one James mentioned. If you can recognize too much in the environment ("That there's a fire post", "that there is a roof drain pipe") the environment wouldn't feel alien anymore. As the creature you play is supposed to not really grasp what's going on in the world around it, the player should be in on that impression. We are going for a thing that's more abstract or expressionistic - what's displayed on the screen is supposed to serve an emotional narrative, and that emotional tone has "not quite understanding what's going on" as a very important center piece.

>Another is that recognizable objects cement the scale too much. Experiments with assets such as a door frame and similar has had the outcome that the viewer apply human scale to them by default - and then the slugcat and everything else is given a very distinct relative size which is something we're not really comfortable with. How big is a slugcat compared to a human? Waist-height, knee-height, almost as tall? We definitely prefer never to answer that question and not have the player think about it either. Slugcats, vultures and the other creatures exist in Rain World, and its their sizes compared to each other that are relevant.
>>
>>737240341
there isn't, it's literally just wandering around the game
also screen traps where you get eaten immediately upon entry because the world isn't frozen while you're crawling out

>The scale issue is actually not that big of an issue to me personally. Might look a bit too small at times, but this is a weird cartoon universe where things aren't really that pinned down. I honestly couldn't tell you how tall a slugcat would be next to a human, which is kind of the point, because it never is next to a human - it lives in its own realm. The weird scale of the water reminds you of that a bit, which I'm not entirely opposed to. Then again, I'd prefer it being ambiguous to it being visually well-defined that the slugcat is small as a raindrop, because if you forced an answer I'd probably have to say that it's closer to an earth-mammal in size than a droplet of water
>>
There's a lot of interesting thoughts on the game in devblog, must read for all RW fans
>I have been thinking about what sort of narrative I could insert into Rain World, without breaking the things I do like about it. A while ago I had a conversation with James, and he gave one specific type of narrative a name: "Silver lizard stole your girlfriend"-narrative. Rain World should NOT have a "Silver lizard stole your girlfriend"-narrative. Everything about it is wrong. I think what bugs me the most is the anthropomorphization of the bear creatures. Waaaay to many human qualities implied. Girlfriends. Individual villains. Revenge motifs. The bear creatures actually have very few human qualities. They obviously utilize simple tools, but they don't seem to be able to manufacture them, and there's no indication that they have a language.
This one is old, back then slugcats were still called bear creatures

>>
>>737244234
I hated drought, but it did do ONE good thing that I loved. When you hibernated, it showed a sort or cryptic "forecast" of the rain cycle, and it would rain intermittently for 1-2 pips out of the cycle. So, it forced you to find a hiding spot until it passed. I thought that was cool as hell, really added some variety and made the rain feel dangerous again.

Unfortunately no weather mod tries to copy that, it's either constantly drizzling or it's nothing. I want a standalone mod of just that feature, fuck drought itself.
>>
>>737246913
>one of the echoes calls you "some kind of rodent"

When I played Rivulet, I had a terrible, terrible time in the Rot. I followed the overseer's guidance, but somehow, I just kept going past the thing. It is really unfortunate how taking the cell fixes the rain timer, though. Now you're once again experiencing regular rain, except you're not just the Rivulet, but the Rivulet with the macguffin cell. Submerged was nice and different, but as with all Downpour regions, it was way too large and overstayed its welcome
>>
>>737260120
I agree about the cell, it shouldn't have changed the timer. The whole fun of early campaign is racing between shelters and trying to scrounge up food in your 5 minute cycles. I enjoyed carting the cell around though, the extra movement from it is fun

Downpour expanded on the timeline
Watcher expanded on the world space
>>
>>737260998
It would be interesting way to make 2nd half of the Spearmaster's story harder but the problem is if you already visited important areas you can passage back with key items option enabled. And the whole ecosystem is at its worst making it one of the hardest campaigns.
There's a lot of questionable game design in Downpour and Watcher

When I first got to SM's campaign I thought that holding two spears would have been more impactful than it really was lmao. Nowadays, I think Hunter's backspear is way more meaningful than SM's dual spears bullshit ever was and its sad. Still don't know who on the DP dev team thought that making the character with no mouth haul a fucking pearl around the map was a good or fun idea.
>>
>>737261470
Yeah, it only matters for big bugs and Vultures, the latter of which are impractical to fight in many circumstances especially since it's trivial to fill Spearmaster's food bar by taking pot shots at whatever passes by. Can't Hunter hold two spears with some roll shenanigans anyways?

Saint was strange.
I think downpour had slugcats going to five pebbles as a thing they do for every campaign added to the repetition
>>
>>737261470
Spearmaster was the first character I played so I went in with no knowledge that Five Pebbles is the key to literally all the fucking campaigns. I expected this whole timeline deal to affect the vanilla regions much more extensively, so I was pleased when I managed to get lost in the new Garbage/Citadel transition area, then visited Waterfront and Moon. Then I went for the Rivulet campaign, which should be on the opposite end of the timeline, and the regions were mostly vanilla...
>>
>>737261796
Not sure, I only really played Hunter the one time outside of expedition, so maybe they killed it.

Timeline changes were lacking but honestly, how can anyone make a future and past version of, for example, Farm Arrays? It made sense with Garbage Wastes and Waterfront being close to Moon and collapsing but I can't think of anything that would work in other regions.

hmm thats a good one actually. They did it with Drainage for Saint
>Make some pipes available for some characters but not others
now this one is depends on situation. I like following same layout but having more visual changes. Blocking off entire paths doesn't sound fun, that happened to one of the routes there's in Shoreline that is missing in Waterfront. They didn't add new one to compensate for it, making overall layout of region a bit more linear.

most default runs in Downpour are so damn streamlined. There's of course things in each that encourage thorough exploration of all regions but it's something that is not required for normie endings. I think gourmand, if you redid his crafting to be more streamlined and less absurd would be very close to the quality of hunter. It would be nice if he could hold 2 things in his gullet too, to really sell the idea of "the smart item using slug"
I really enjoy playing him in expedition and such. The exaustion adds a genuine consideration to gameplay especially if you decide to play with low scav reputation. And if the crafting was mostly on stuff like lanterns, flashbombs, maybe bombs that make spores but not actual sporepods. Probably the only time ive ever used flashfruits to walk past scav tolls was with gourmand.

>I dropped a Gourmand playthrough once because of it. On a second attempt, I decided to just chill in each region for a much longer time, experiment with the crafting and such, and I had a much better experience
I like Gourmand's campaign and the foodquest gets me to explore a little more than normal, which I like, but holy fuck I can't stand the stamina mechanic he has. Shit drags his campaign low for me just because of how much it makes it a pain to move around and climb poles. I'm going crazy about something I remember in the vanilla game pre 1.9, but I'm not sure if it's true or something I made up.
I remember than if the slugcat held 2 edible items in both hands I remember that holding the pick up button (eat function) makes it eat what's on its right hand, and only that item.
Post Downpour DLC, holding 2 edible items in each hand then activating the eat function makes the slugcat eat the item from the right hand, then immediately continues to eat the item from the left hand. This is annoying for when you are carrying a mushroom and a food item, and only want to consume one.
Can someone tell me if I'm right or wrong?

Strange that almost 9 years later and not a single mod that could "fix" this behavior.
By the way, is there any lost media mods from the vanilla era? According to this weird russian wiki of the game, there was a region called Concealed Garden that even had a special gimmick that gave a mutation to the slugcats allowing you to "hear" the thoughts of yellow lizards.

I spent two fucking hours bashing my head against those fucking niggers only to find a dead end. So I backtracked back to Outskirts to go through that other gate that I found earlier. The 5 karma level one. My first playthrough was wild. I love to explore though, so it's all good.

>I guess if you're willing to enable mods mid playthrough, it's a shitty band aid for what's probably the worst mechanic in the game.
I'm the biggest hater of RW mods though, thats the reason why I'm so conflicted with its DLCs
>>
>>737267696
You might be onto something. I went through Chimney Canopy while being roasted by friends and then got filtered while trying to climb the wall with the lizard spam.
My favorite segments now are ones with lots of chaos and action where you're navigating a battlefield. Or water sections but purely for aesthetic reasons.

if you want a bunch of pictures of every region, there's a merged screenshots folder here that andrew made, it has screenshots from every room in the basegame

and this one has all the downpour screenshots for each scug
I use them for wallpapers a lot, I don't think there's a downpour one yet though

I found it weird that you could force your way into Submerged Superstructure as Survivor, despite the fact the region itself and even the entrance to it are not designed to any slugcat but Rivulet.
It is hard to navigate with short lung capacity, but at least there is one colored pearl and Moon's old cloak.

Desolate Tract feels like a region that would work better in 3D tbdesu. Maybe that's just me wanting a 3D rendition of this game, but I'd love a 3D game of this style. Hopefully that "Signal" project Videocult were working on is something like that, no mutliplayer centric shit.

It's a really good game got me by surprise, after survivor I played monk and learned to use stuff I didn't as survivor, like, I did not know you could ride the jetfish, how bubblegrass worked and the little blue rocks that are actually food if you drop them in the water.

Also as monk I gave moon her cloak, I hate that underwater area. Then I played hunter and as annoying as It was I enjoyed it, didn't make it to the depths tho.

Haven't played the other ones yet, maybe I'll do it sometime in the future. Thanks for reading.

I thought the DLC was going to be a iterator sending the Watcher out across a long distance to try and meet up with another operator but what we got was really gay and lame.

Them being different should be the expectation, the most disappointing areas were the ones that felt too much like the iterator complex if anything.

I'm pretty sure the only new creature they added since release was a drill crab variant. Oh, and maybe a sky whale variant for locust maps.
The new ending stuff is nothing exciting gameplay wise, you just do the exact same shit as with the Prince but close portals instead of rotting shit up.
Only interesting part of it I guess is the actual ending sequence for lore stuff.
You're not gonna miss out on much by just watching the ending cutscene or whatever instead of replaying. They fixed some of the glaring issues but it's still a chore.

How can a new player even get stuck in farm arrays? Don't you have to pass the toll booth? I think people would immediately see 5 fucks with spears and think it's immediate danger they should run away from before even trying to figure out WHY they're there.
>>
>>737303829
Unless you actively go out of your way you probably won't even find Farm Arrays on a blind Survivor playthrough.
>>
>>737266256
Never understood this since the controls in the game are fine. You pretty much learn a lot of the important mechanics through playing. I didn't look up anything in the game and learnt how to throw a spear into a wall to use it as a platform, backflip, re-orientate myself in pipes, boost through pipes, boost out of the pipes, boost out of water to reach higher ground, store an object for later and probably some others I forgot.

Admittedly, there would be some nice concepts to know like throwing an item when you jump to go further or backflipping and throwing a spear up/down but I think the game is fine without a guide unless someone is REALLY struggling to understand.

The only issue I ever had with the controls was the long jump because sometimes you needed to be perfectly on a ledge to make the jump and you'd miss a lot and fall to your death like in Chimney Canopy and Sky Islands.
>>
>>737304191
you never actually need to down throw unless you climb the wall tbf

I'm so glad I got filtered by Chimney Canopy on my first run and went back and found the Garbage Wastes path from Industrial, I would have been fucked
>>
>>737267696
Yeah, I was stuck in Chimney Canopy for a long while and pretty much went in a circle around Garbage Wastes, Industrial Complex and back to Chimney Canopy for a total of 10 hours thinking I was making progress before eventually finding Shaded Citadel and making real progress.

In the end, those three are my favourite areas and favourite part of my playthrough. I still listen to the Threat Theme from Industrial since I just loved hearing it and I like when there's a lot of chaos going on, like a Scav, some lizards and a fucking vulture in the sky while you're trying your hardest not to die is peak rain world to me.
>>
>>737267696
>that fucking part with a million kelps

>>

I love how this theme feels like you're really high up, I'm not sure how they did it but it perfectly encapsulates dangling from a spear in the wall with a fall to your death below and a vulture above.

I don't understand the whole idea that you're supposed to suffer through the learning process when the actual game is so much fun. Sure you shouldn't look up maps, routes or monsters, but knowing what kind of sick shit you can pull off with with the simple control setup was key to my enjoyment of the game.

>It's always been my intention that the story of rain world is that of the character, rather than that of the world, and that it is produced by the game engine rather than through writing. If you decide to take down a Vulture, and actually succeed, that is the story. If you save pups, or don't, or befriend some creature or kill some creature, that is the story.

>That said, we do love our environments and of course we have ideas about what's what in the world, and we would like to try some "environmental storytelling." But don't expect to get some super clear linear array of events spelled out to you haha, we'll be hinting here and there but you'll have to do most of the work yourself.

>The main character is a creature that's somewhere on the edge between animal and human thinking, meaning that it can only almost make sense of what it sees around it. It can maybe understand that the symbols on the wall bear meaning, but it can't understand the meaning. It can see that one machine connects to another through pipes, but it can't decipher the functionality much beyond that. It can guess that this big place might have served some big purpose, but it can never quite reach a clear understanding of that purpose. We want to mirror this experience in the player.

have they ever said anything about lizard behavior? what got me wondering was how white lizards will chase me to other screens sometimes, and sometimes prefer to just stay where they are and re-cloak and wait for me. it's almost like individual lizards have a range of behaviors, kinda like how some scavs are more or less aggressive
>>
>I gave them a pearl I thought they’d like and they still hate it!
>>
>>737312012
they did, but I don't have any quotes of it saved.
Lizards are not some dumb monsters that hunt you specifically. There's deep behaviour systems in there, different character traits, their reputation with slugcat and other colours of lizards, reputation with different creatures. This system exists in every RW creature, but some are simple, like the lantern mice, others are incredibly complex ,like scavengers.
>>
>>737312012
to add to white lizards specifically. There's a special trait, I think it's called 'mean', thats is more common in white lizards at The Leg. It makes them much more aggressive in comparison to their usual ambush predator behaviour

>>737317707
From what I understand about the situation he's perfectly fine financially, and while I don't know the exact profit split between him, james, and their new publisher, I'd imagine he's taken care of.

The real villain of the story is adult swim ironically, as Rainworld was originally published by them (they published a bunch of weird avant-garde videogames for a bit) but then they completely de-funded and removed that branch of the company, and basically dumpstered every way Joar and James could update/interact with their game legally. This is because to publish updates, DLC, or anything else for the game they needed permission from adult swim. This lead to a lengthy legal battle where from what I can tell Joar's passions went to different things, and he simply hasn't wanted to return to developing on Rainworld even after its legal troubles have resolved.

Now he's working on Airframe Ultra, which I'm not that interested in.

My first playthrough i never saw Moon or filtration at all. I somehow went straight to Five Pebbles, and then he said west so i went straight to the farm arrays and then the end.

Different experience for me. I started playing the game right around the whole pandemic lockdown stuff in early 2020. Probably the comfiest time to play rain world since I had so much time indoors and the game was somehow scratching that exploration game itch I had at the time. No idea if I would do that nowadays if I were new to the game.

Rain World is the greatest game that will ever be made. There will never be another Rain World.
