Why did this series fail and die? What went wrong?

So I played Valkyria Chronicles 4. The first game was my entry into Japanese SRPGs, my favorite genre now in the current slop RPG era and the dead field of strategy games

Game 4... The Japanese don't learn from their mistakes, I haven't seen a game with such obviously stupid decisions in such a large number in a long time

- The ranking system is stupid. I closed all the maps on A. After I realized that the rank depends only on the speed of completion, I started rushing everything to get more experience and currency and this killed all strategic interest in the game
- Once again, only two of the plot characters died, instead of the story completely going into military drama and hopelessness, they hand out a plot anime armor to almost everyone
- The player can move one unit ten times, while the enemy can only move bosses twice per turn, there should have been an obvious limit on the number of actions per unit per turn.
- The game ignored the most interesting potential drama and dilemma in the plot: Minerva's discovery that Leena was an enemy spy and that her squad and all her friends died because of the treason. I don't understand how they didn't even try to play out this story

The mission design is often really dumb. I remember mission 9 of VC4 where the ice witch is shooting at you. There is alot of enemies, but the goal is to just capture the objective. I just loaded the APC up, then got as close as possible to just have people exit, eliminate the few people inside the enemy HQ, then captured it. A bit of RNG required on how enemies moved but you could ignore like 90% of the map+enemies.

Its the consistent poor objectives which makes cheesing the best choice, plus not much innovation between VC1 to 4. Why can't we have interiors, breaking into houses, shooting out of 2nd story windows? Or atleast mild destruction

Absolutely made for justified war criminal rape sex as recompense. Also yeah reasonable thoughts on the game OP, I agree, yada yada. It really isn't great to incentivize speeding through the game but I get why they did it. Idk, the whole conept seems like it can't be expanded on. It's fun working through a battlefield like a puzzle game but also very tedious. Id just toss it and start a different system more about simultaneous rounds.

This isn't unique to Valkyria Chronicles in particular but a lot of Japanese IPs suffer the same fate.

It was worse in the first game though, they toned down scouts movement speed or increased shocktrooper, I don't remember wich, in 4

That's not entirely true, it has the potential for substance, you wouldn't even need to completely reivent the mechanics or engine, just changing some numbers, better level design and challenge design would improve the game tenfold, the potential is clear which makes it more sad.

To be fair they did a good job of diversifying the missions, all the maps are different, they are kinda interesting, but the fact that you need to complete them as quickly as possible to get a high rank kills the entire game design, as a result, in most cases, you just transport three soldiers behind enemy lines in a car in a couple of turns and that's it.

I agree about destructibility and ineractivity, this would show the development of this games for sure.

4 was very clearly made by devs that didn't play the previous games. 2 and 3 fixed most of 1's problems only for 4 to bring them right back.

You just have to larp and self-impose challenges, like not upgrading, not using cheese tactics and it can be fun.

The game would have been massively improved by imposing the same ranking system as Advance Wars, where speed enemy kill count and reduce ally losses are all factored into your score. Just up the speed par up a couple more turns.
Make the tank an actual wrecking force and important to use in every level rather have it parked at base while you scout rush everything.
Gut the effectiveness of orders.
Give snipers interception fire but at a smaller vision cone than scouts and shocktroopers
I liked a lot of the new classes from VC2 and wanted them in a real game like VC1 and VC4.

The tank is probably the hardest thing in this game to balance. In the endgame 2 have you a light tank destroyer, only used 1 AP and one shots pretty much everything since the main gun was accurate enough to pop heads across the small maps. The meta just became giving the tank 5-6 turns to clean house and then running over a scout to take camps. But, yeah, overall the problems in the game all feed back to the central problem of speed being the only factor, and in 1, 2, and 4 that timer is tight. Three is at least lax enough and has good enough map design that you don't feel encouraged to cheese it.
