This trope doesn’t get nearly the hate it deserves
>>
>>737257431
I like it.
>>
didn't you only have missiles and the morph ball in the intro?
>>
Best way it's done is that you don't get those powers back but you get different abilities that make you way stronger. After beating the game you can try playing it again with original powers
>>
Yeah it loses that feeling of progress if you're just getting your stuff back

How about a game where you start with all kinds of powers but you have to sacrifice them and weaken yourself to proceed?
>>
This is in fact videogames for once but

>new trope
Hell naw, this is just Metroid Prime 4 following the trends of bad console games from the late 00s and early 10s of making you super powerful at the beginning and losing that shit. It's real old actually.
And it fell off for good reason.

The first Assassin's Creed game did it too, I wasn't aware other games had done it as well

Castlevania Symphony of the Night for one example

>new trope
boss baby
>>
>>737257969
>The first Assassin's Creed game did it too
huh? i don't remember that. you start off with like 0 of the syncing shit. also the first game was incredibly barebones. it was basically a tech demo
>>
>>737258008
You just lose some good gear. You don't actually have any of the powers you need to traverse the castle at the beginning. Death doesn't snatch the Bat form from you for example.
>>
>>737257431
We get it, OP, you follow an extreme faggot
>>
>>737257431
is this trope really that bad? in some games it can be reasonable, by giving players a taste of what's to come
especially if they have little clue what they're actually playing
>>
>>737258102
Yeah, but you also start with throwing knifes, ability to parry, ability to dodge, shorter but faster blade and increased dmg. You lose all of that after Al Mualim degrades you and then gradually get it some of it back after each eliminated target
>>
>>737257914
Not identical but that happens in risk of rain 2 when fighting the boss, during the phase transition he steals all of your items and can easily destroy you if you're not careful. You then have to fight him briefly as a base character with no additional power until you can damage him enough to get your items back. Definitely catches you by surprise the first time you encounter it and depending on your items it can completely brick your run by making him nearly impossible to damage enough to get your shit back before he kills you
>>
>>737258102
You start off with all your gear, but also deface the three tenets of the creed, which is what gets you "killed
" and demoted

Must have been a long time since you last played this game
>>737258008
Incredible
>>
>>737257431
First time I encountered it was in Darksiders. Hate it. Never played a game like it again.

This ''new trope'' was coined as a Abilitease 15 years ago by Giantbomb.

God of War 2 and 3 did that, Kratos is maxed out at the start of both.

The trope of posting twitter screencaps and calling it discussion doesn't get nearly the hate it deserves. Form your own thoughts and attach them to a sexy drawing of a video game character.

This is metroid prime 4 following the steps of metroid prime, which also does this.

Wukong did it fairly well
intro was a tutorial boss fight as THE wukong where you couldn't really die but felt badass then you take control of the chosen one and slowly get wukong's abilities and become wukong
>>
>>737258181
On paper I agree with that but something is always off about them, like a god losing all his power because he tripped in the stairs.
You also never had enough time to learn any of the shit they give you so it's just frustrating.
I prefer the trope of getting imprisoned and having to relearn how to fight without all your gear and possibly learn new skills that will combine with your gear when you get it back. The difference being you get everything back in an hour instead of over the course of the entire game.
Pikmin 1 gets a pass because it's the whole point.
>>
>Samus when she has all of the upgrades but she just got a new mission
>>
>>737257431
yeah i can't stand this. all it does is remind me that video game progression is pretty much bullshit. it's not like "woah look at these powers!!! oh no i lost them, can't wait to grind my ass off to get them back!!!"
>>
>>737257969
Damn cant belive the only video game youve ever played was the first assassin's creed... grim
>>
>>737257431
Well you faggots just keep buying sequels instead of new games so they need to keep reusing the ol'reliable plot devices to explain why you lose all your powers from previous games.
>>
>>737257431
KCD2 does this and it's a complete fucking piece of shit.

I hate when it is just magically taken away from you, I tolerate it when there's a timeskip in between games and it's implied that the protagonist is out of practice.
>>
>>737258181
It's a player psychology thing. You may think it's a "taste of what's to come" but for some it's like it ruins the surprise of how powerful you can get. Or the feeling of losing them and have to "get them back" frames the whole grind and game in a negative light (you aren't getting more powerful but getting back to your baseline). So a lot of players react negatively to it. Which is probably why it's done away with.
>>
Don't mind it in theory but it tends to be frustrating because the base state you're left in is way too barebones. Even the dumbest gorilla nigger learned more mechanics during the short intro than he'll have access to after losing the powers. That's what makes it frustating, not just the fact that you start powerful and lose powers.
God of War III you don't even recover the same moveset, you learn a new one, so that's pretty cool that you can reproduce combos from II at the start that don't actually work with your full end game moveset even if you're more powerful by then, but it still feels equally frustating just how limited you are right after.
>>
>>737257431
Isn't the problem with Metroid that every single game is just getting the exact same powers all the way back since Super? The series hasn't added any actual new things afaik and maybe that's the reason it was dead for so long.
>>
>>737257498
you have missiles, morph ball, charge beam, grapple beam, and varia suit
you get all of those back by the end of the first area anyway, except for grapple beam but who cares
>>
>>737257431
I remember way back in the day Metroid was criticized by nearly everyone for doing this, chads and nerds alike, although people like that didn't even exist.

There are two proper ways to do this:
1. You play as a different character that has everything and the intro is basically a flashback, but the protagonist is not this character and starts from scratch, bonus points if the former shows up multiple times and you have to run away until you can fight them.
2. Do not design an intro stage that requires abilities too much, if the point is to tell a story it shouldn't even be that long in the first place.

the reason devs want to give you the upgrades in the first place is that they put all the most fun gameplay behind the upgrades, so if you started without any upgrades you get basically the least fun version of the game possible. that's what the devs think any way. there is a disconnect in perspective between devs and players because the devs just spent several years playtesting this game. they are seriously bored of it and can't get it up for simple tutorial style content any more. meanwhile a new player will typically be grateful if there is LESS SHIT GOING ON. but devs just have these been-there-done-that-goggles on and cannot relate to how an actual first time player would perceive the game.
>>
>>737258239
>Al Mualim degrades you
Ass ass in?
>>
>>737261273
Yeah i know that was the old way of doing it, and i really wished i could say game design learned and improved from that, but nowadays the industry is about to crash thanks to AAA devs who couldn't hate playing and knowing videogames more.
