>>737258659Eh, I dont know. I've played older games on a newer 4k HDTV and didnt have any issues. It doesn't look bad either, I get that a lot of people want to re create that experience. And if I would have known I would have kept that huge Sony trinitron I had. Shit weight liked 1000lbs.
>>737258891A grown man posted this
I used to think this was bullshit and that you could just use CRT filters if you really cared that much, but then I got a CRT and holy shit these games look so much better on CRTs. None of these games were ever meant to played on anything but a real CRT.The difference is like night and day. I'm sorry I failed to believe the truth at first.
>>737258659flat screens have really fucked geometry. you can see it in the OP image. flat screens are really just good for watching laserdiscs. composite on a consumer set>flat screen rgb/svideo/component
>>737258973CRTs are so fast the camera cant keep up but our eyes can
>>737259147That's the thing, of course you're not going to have any real issues playing on a modern TV. The main point is that the optimal and crispest image is going to come from the CRT tv, preferably if you can get the games to run on devices which output at optimal 240p. At higher resolutions there are diminishing returns and you get to a point where you may as well just use a modern TV. PS1 / SNES and lower all look amazing on a CRT. PS2 and up, it depends on the game.
>>737259320Looks fine to me
>>737258659I dont have the space for a big CRT so i'll cope with filters meanwhile. Also probably going to mod the remastered soundtrack next time i replay DKC.

OLED + CRT shaders does the trick
>>737259207yeah modern monitors could never give you eye damage from how bright the screen wasi dont miss it honestly
>>737259762The PS1 had hardware dithering intended for composite blending. RGB looks objectively inferior on the machine, this is not up for debate. RGB onlyists are lowscum retards.
>>737259814you can't get eye damage from bright screens, unless you somehow got the chinesium LEDs that dont filter out UV raysthe main issue with CRTs is just the weight and the size. my 23" computer CRT weighs like 20+ kg. the only upside is that CRTs came with ridiculous refresh rates, so 100 hz was kinda the default

The motion clarity and (perceived?) lack of input lag is what makes me miss them It's just not the same in those aspects (so far)
>>737258659After 20 years, I finally decided to give it a try. Got a 21'' CRT TV with component and s-video. >>737262760probably you're just like my mom. she always thought the TV was shit because she remember how awful the noisy TV antenna.was.she could not believe how good netflix looked on that thing when was connected via composite. (27" crt btw)
>>737262760>I've grown up playing on CRTslol yea of course you did
>>737258659So why didn't you put a retro game in the picture? That's an old game.
You can't beat an actual CRT. Any filters or whatever is pure cope. That being said, I use a Retrotink 5x for 6th gen and back games personally. I've thought about getting one of the "high end PVMs" that they shill at the retro store and a little desk for it, but I don't know. If I'm going to be honest I spend the most time on my PS5 Pro. I've pretty much played all the old shit I want (and its alot).
CRTs are nice. I like them.
>>737260018The one that isn't connected to the TV with composite cables in the front panel?
Every CRT near me (because I refuse to trust the postal service to take care of a heavy CRT) is just a 27" or bigger unmovable beast. I'm just considering buying an LCD from the mid-2000s.
>>737269002This but they're all RF only.
>>737269385I actually picked up a CRT off the side of the road that's RF and I have zero use for it.

Games were designed around crts so it's not exactly surprising they'd look the best that way. The question is how big of a deal that is to you, since it's hard to find one by the roadside nowadays and you'll likely be paying out the nose for one instead. I still have two old family units I rescued and kept, I genuinely don't know what I'll do when they finally die on me.

>>737274082We could have today CRT advantage in flat displays, the technology behind that was SED.Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display (SED) was a promising, ultimately defunct, flat-panel technology developed by Canon and Toshiba around 2005–2006. It aimed to merge the superior picture quality of CRT (deep blacks, fast response) with the slim form factor of LCD. Prototype SED TVs displayed exceptional brightness and contrast at trade shows but failed to launch commercially due to high production costs and intense competition

>>737281030>red white and yellow outputsThat's composite video signal (only the yellow RCA connector), White and red are stereo audio L & R.If that's the case you'll need an extra converter, a VGA - RGBHV to composite/S-Video converter (Pic related). My set-up for getting 240p is the Following: PC/Laptop HDMI output at 480p (640x480 pixels) to HDMI to YPbPr transcoder. --> YPbPr Signal to GBS-Controld Downscaler to 240p --> GBS-Control connected through Component (YPbPr) SEGA Saturn Cable to TV (Red, Green, Blue RCA Cables). If your TV doesn't have component you will need to add Pic related to the end of the chain, you could use a standard VGA Cable instead the Saturn Component Cable for that connection.
>>737282346that doesnt go inside anything right?
>>737282391You could print a case for it.Also if you have an old PC, laptop or Raspberry PI with VGA output, you only need the previous VGA RGBHV converter only, install Batocera Linux with the CRT emudriver scripts and you're set up.I do use all that convoluted set up, since I use my laptop for other things

you know, when walking my dog a few weeks ago I came across a 20ish inch trinitron someone just put out on the curb not 3 minutes from my house. I thought "I should come back for that when I'm done walking the dog." but then I talked myself out of it because I don't have any consoles and I don't plan on ever buying consoles and it would be too much of a pain in the ass to add the analogue video board to my mister due to the custom case I made for it. so I never came back for it.but I just ordred a superstation one which is a consolized mister that has composite, component, and s-video ports as a back up mister/travel mister.fuck I should have grabbed that damn trinny

From what I gather in this thread, people only buy CRT's so they can show them off to other posers on the internet
>>737293704Pretty much. But I do enjoy playing old games on a proper era display. Here's a NGC game emulated on dolphin and displayed on my CRT TV.
>>737293704Also, there's the great possibility to play games that were never available on your region, japanese exclusives translated to English and hacks that enhace or fix certain bugs.Castlevania Rondo of Blood (For the PC Engine CD / Turbografx-16 CD, pic related) never came outside from Japan, but thanks to emulation we can enjoy playing these jewels, plus displaying them on a CRT TV like the era appropriate medium is the cherry on the top.
>>737293042>but still can't properly play PS2, NGC, Wii, XBOX or DreamcastIt can't play them at all - which is why I own those consoles for those games. You can send your PC screen over to your mister via ethernet with mistercast and it basically does what a GBS-C does but maybe not as well latencywise, I've never investigated the numbers on it but it's not more than 1 frame. I still want to invest in one of those analogue scalers one day for my widescreen EDTV - I was thinking of copping an OSSC pro but fuck they are pricey. At least Nintendo still keeps 480p going.>>737294381>Also, there's the great possibility to play games that were never available on your regionHell yeah, I've been playing PC-98 on my monitor and they look incredible at their native res. >>737258973It really fucking does look like that.It works for pixel art because it blurs pixels into each other, making a sort of AA effect. But it is really fucking blurry and colors bleed into each other. This is the principal point, if newer games are nothing but slop there's 40 years of games to emulate, choose and play from.
>>737294994$199 US Dollars and also from the Krikzz page:* The built-in CD-ROM2 core does not work if a CD-ROM or Ten no Koe 2 is connected to the console's external expansion port, or if the console has a built-in CD-ROM. For this reason, the cartridge cannot run CD games on PC Engine Duo systems. So, if you have a PC Engine Duo then no CD Emulation for you. Also for less than the $199 US Dollars you can get the proper hardware for connecting a PC to a CRT TV and have all the videogame systems for emulation from the Nintendo Wii and below.
>>737295234You're a fucking retard if you fell for the TurboDuo meme of yesteryear. Not only is it unable to use the Turbo Everdrive but it also has no expansion port for RGB output and horrific Gamegear tier timebomb capacitors. My whole Turbo Everdrive+EDFX+CIB Coregrafx with 8 games cost me a grand total of 400€ which is frankly fucking nothing for a perfectly equipped system. Yeah I could've gotten a thinkpad for 50€ which can emulate all of that for free but the hardware is half the experience with consoles.
actually the developers envisioned me playing them in bed on my changheld they just didnt have the technology at the time
It's really fucked up that wr don't have the technology to build CRT's anymore. I feel if we did, they'd be making a comeback now.
>>737258973That's because cameras are not human eyes.People don't realize how natural and bright CRTs are in person.
>>737295382Just because you can, it doesn't mean everybody has the means for it, or someone just could get a Duo in their hands. 400€ for you could be pocket change, but for some people in other countries that money could be two months of work, so emulation can be the sensible choice from them you elitists piece of shit.
>>737295882>but for some people in other countries that money could be two months of work, so emulation can be the sensible choice from them you elitists piece of shitSounds to me that they have the much more acute issue of being brown.
>>737291253what converter do you use for your laptop? I got a amd card for my desktop so I can plug it in natively through dvi-i
>>737258659>spend time searching the perfect CRT after having them through the entirety of my childhood and wanting to relive it.>find the perfect one and spend close to 200 dollars on it>plug it in and immediately get excruciating 15hz coil whine that gives me a a headache after 10 minutes of use>never had the problem as a kid but are now sensitive to it as an adult Well those 10 minutes were fun, I guess. I need to get a PC CRT monitor, for the higher hz coil whine I can't hear, and just don't have the time/money right now to deal.
>>737296254You lose the higher-end hearing range by the time you're 40.
>>737258659I still have my sony trinitron + modded snes/ps1/ps2. Using an emulator is just not the same
>>737258659enjoy your literal radiation sickness lmao
>>737296327Insane how entire generations died from radiation sickness between 1940 and 2010.
>>737294381rondo of blood is available on the wii virtual console. been playing that on a CRT ever since
>>737296183Is a HDMI to YPbPr (Component) transcoder, it's literally a DAC (Digital to Analog) Converter, and that goes to a GBS-C that Downscales to 240p
>>737294381>Castlevania Rondo of Blood (For the PC Engine CD / Turbografx-16 CD, pic related) never came outside from JapanIt was included in the PSP remake from 2007.
>>737296327I'm ready for Chernobyl!!
I just spend 1000 dollars australian on a Sony tinitron svideo CRT 27 inch in near mint condition AMA
>>737298098>no RGBLikely worse than my 50€ eurotrinitron and you could've snagged a PVM for that money.
Based CRT chad demonstrating the flexibility of modern emulation, and adapters, AND showing you how easy it is.
>>737298098Show proof or didn't happen
But I don't want to put my PS3 onto a CRT just to play PS1/PS2 games when I still need it for PS3 games.
>>737298521Just get a PS2 then? The PS3 scales PS1 and PS2 games like shit.
>>737260096as SNES devs really intended to be fucking chrono trigger effects
>fgcniggas drove up the price on crtsI just want a little trinitron for my desk without having to pay like 500 bucks for a tv made in 1997.
>HDTV i bought in 2009 finally died>Was a big, beautiful motherfucker with a wall of inputs, 4 scarts, 9HDMI and a bunch of others i didnt even recognise>Money is tight right now so get a budget more tv>Picture is excellent, games on modern consoles never looked better>Only inputs are two hdmis>Doesnt even have a headphone jack>mfwAt some point technology stopped being about offering choice and merely about adding one more screen to rent to advertisers to sell problems rather than solutions. I want to say 2007 was when it started.
>>737293704Congratulations on noooticing literally what everyone does when they post something on the Internet, zoomer retard. Now show off your haircut.
>>737274082Palmer Luckey mentioned "quantum ray tubes" as in aside in a couple of interviews. It's supposed to not work exactly like a CRT but have the same picture.
>>737274072Don't you hate e-celebs enough when fucking avgn, irate and even real hd footage of the past has shown games running on proper CRT composite even at the buttfuck of europe and japan?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUEfp_hsC9Uhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKXr_DbqHsUAll of These retards fell for the RetroRGB podcast scammers and their reddit bullshit where those two retards there spread that composite is le bad to shill their shitty RGB and SCAT euro cables.the only games that were made for RGB CRT are PC games but that is a special case because VGA Shadowmask is stupidly better.>>737270942preset?>>737287690Brainlet take when Doom 3, Half Life 2 and FEAR proves you wrong
>>737291743>playing fucking sonic on RGB
Is there any PS2 to hdmi option that doesnt suck shit and give a worse picture? I just want to play my PS2 games on my bedroom tv again.
>>737274172>he doesn't know about suck-starting a shotgunSo you are just underaged.
>>737300478I got my first RGB SCART cable 25 years ago when I got fucking fed up having to tune my PS1 with the dogshit RF dongle every time I wanted to switch from watching TV broadcasts to playing my PS1. I don't know how you viewed your games in your destitute brown shithole, but I haven't looked back since.
>>737300747It's always lulzy when ESLs try to call other people ESL because they don't understand a turn of phrase, or they see an obvious typo.
>RGBtroon is a scatfagevery single time
>>737300694https://electron-shepherd.com/collections/all/products/electronpulseBe advised that this isn't an upscaler and your TV will most likely not accept 240p over HDMI and even if it does modern HDTVs introduce input latency when deinterlacing and upscaling. The resulting image quality will also be hit or miss, depending on the upscaling method. You would ideally use RGB SCART/component to an upscaler/deinterlacer of your pricepoint which would output proper HDMI to your TV.
>>737300824You're the one trying to save face, izzat boy.
>>737300596Yeah, I know, but at the moment I only have a YPbPr component output from the GBS-C to connect it to the TV, I'm waiting for the "Pic Related" >>737282346 to arrive from the mail and have Composite and S-Video options.
>>737301335If you are playing through pc to tv signal, experiment with Blargg's Shaders to see how it goes there before the converter arrives.
>>737300596The entire game isn't set behind a waterfall.
>>737301710>what is the shield effect>fire blending>casino zone>the acid zone tube effectsI could mention more but then i remember one thingRGB was the poor man's signal because it was cheap and no one wanted to buy composite or s-video to arcades whom were expensive.
>>737301859>the signal requiring more isolated cables to display an image was the poor mans signalPretty grim that americans, in addition to not affording to treat their mental illness, are still intimidated by a built-in video output option consoles have had from 1985 onward.

>>737302253japanese*you got bought out
>>737300694Not that many besides what anon said on this post >>737301136 Another option is getting an upscaler like the OSSC or GBS-C, they are cheap and works for any console made before the Wii as seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yAl_wUd764>>737301672That's an interesting idea, I would try it later.
>>737301150I just joined the conversation, Izzy Wilde.
>>737299948You can find them on Facebook marketplace. Any CRT is fine, graphics come from the basic design, not the Sony name.

>>737258659this but crt royale on a 77 inch OLED
>>737308546Unfortunately OLED TVs still lag behind CRTs and even select LCDs in motion clarity. There are CRT-like scanning filters that close the gap but they require flagship OLED PC monitor tier refresh rates. This strobing also exacerbates the lack of full-panel brightness of OLEDs.
>>737269002I bought my CRT from some guy 2000km away. It came in some shitty box with random pieces of styrofoam threwn in but still working fine. I still agree it's a risk but CRT are sturdy enough.
>>737300765zoomer hands wrote this post
pictures of crtvs look like shitlook at that picture it's all blury n shitno one want that
>>737299948>trinitronDon't fall for the meme. Yes, they're solid CRTs, but their name and physical look is what makes them expensive and not their quality (even though they are good sets). Panasonic, JVC, Toshiba, and others have made sets that are on par with or even better than the Trinitron series.
>>737309896I'm 31 so a millennial.
>>737291481the cathode ray technology itselfthe image is analogue, meaning it's highly dependant on light and optics physics
>>737291481>>737310875Actually it's not specifically light and optics but rather electromagnetic force since the image is created due to high energy electrons hitting the image surface causing it to glow. Black levels were superior to LCDs due to the "black pixel" emitting actually zero light on its own. Meanwhile LCDs are liquid crystals changing their properties due to electricity applied to them, changing how much light they pass through. LCDs were notorious for low contrast due to the always-on nature of the backlight. The only way to get LCDs to actually have very good contrast was to actually stack 2 matrices so instead of one 1:1000 contrast matrix you had stacked two of them creating maximum of 1:1mil contrast. The absolute top of the line colorist displays are created this way and modern 4k display using this tech costs currently around $20k.
>>737291481Maybe the big laser in the back.
>>737311882I forgot to mention that electro*magnetism* mentioned includes two magnets literally bending the travel path of the electron beam to scan across the image plane.>>737312048IT'S NOT A FUCKING LASER. IT'S AN ELECTRON BEAM NOT A PHOTON BEAM!
>>737258659in my tests, i found that a crt is mandatory for n64 and below (240p). When it comes to 6th gen and Wii, (480i) it really depends on the game, sometimes i prefer play them on the CRT; sometimes using the GBS-C, and even sometimes directly plugged to the TV with component, too bad i dont have a CRT with component inputs
so im a little baffled, i thought component was king for older consoles, but now people are saying composite is actually preferred for older consoles?
>>7373141708-16 bit - compositeeverything else - component
>>737289340Ignorance may be bliss in your case. I went down the hole many years ago and never left. A heavy cost was paid, but my picture looks real fucking nice now, at least.
