I wanted to play this but wikiwalking all the time for quests, systems, plus the jank of an 20+ year old game is fucking tedious.
>>
>>737269829
i would only play this because the artstyle is unique, no other game looks like it
>>
Way too late to the party, fren. You had to be there. Now you are physically incapable of understanding, ever. Sorry.

Not saying you can't extract any kind of fun from it at this point, but that ship where the game truly shined and people remember back fondly of, has sailed decades ago.
>>
>>737269829
Its jank due to the fact that this game came out before World of Warcraft, so it only competition at the time was Ultima online and Everquest.

Also, this OST continues to live in my mind rent free.

literally the point of it being an MMO is that players would discuss and figure shit out in real time (to the point square would deliberately obfuscate players on things like days of the week mattering for crafts), now that people already figured this shit out 20 years ago yeah it loses some of it's appeal
>>
>>737269829
The UI/controls are fucking abysmal. I would play otherwise but holy fuck they haven't updated that shit since 2005.

Back in the day we didn't have wikis, or rather they were very basic, recall doing a massive group run for one of the Chains of Promathia bits and we kept getting lost because the guy leading us was doing a shit job following the online map
>>
>>737269829
It was meant to be this way. It was fun. You couldnt even alt tab back in 2005 cause it would crash the game. the whole point was speaking to other people and finding out mysteries together.
>>
I'm kind of glad the best MMO of all time is permanently gate-kept though, I wish nothing but the worst for zoomertrannys who killed all modern MMOs by demanding all content be hardcore raids (that they don't even participate then) You never deserved to experience prime XI ever, and you never will.
>>
>>737269829
I'm just waiting on them to drop the playonline bullshit

There is a video game, out right now, where you play a runescape style mmo. Its single player and all the other "players" are ai npcs.
There exists in this world, right now, the capability to release an offline single player version of 11 with ai npc players. You would create your character, chat with other bots who have names, personality and social obligations or stuff they struggle with. They could talk to you about it. You could make friends or enemies with them. It could be done as a 75 era game too.
It could be done.
>>
>>737269829
You could just accept not playing optimally, and just go out into the world and do things as you encounter them.

>>737270124
I always preferred this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZNX_QN5kdo
>>
>>737270425
I experienced prime XI and it was really really bad. You're just a brainbroken retard.
>>
>>737270898
You're a larping zoomertranny, you can't fool anyone that actually played.
>>
>>737270997
>reeeeeeee
Nah. Grinding is shit and you are literally mentally deficient if you enjoy it.
>>
>>737269829
I got my ex and a mutual friend to play Horizon with me. They had complete opposite experiences and it was funny. Gf fell in love with the game and we gasped when we saw that standing on the bridge as a ship comes in plays a cutscene of you being forced off the bridge. The game oozes SOVL and fun for patient people. She quit while waiting for Aht Urghan as a 65 PLD. I got her into OSRS since I wanted her to experience MMORPGs where you team up and MMORPGs where it's largely solo. To this day, my ex loves recounting her time in FFXI with me. It has such a good community and creates such amazing stories.

Mutual friend got absolutely filtered by having to look at a map and interpret a grid, called it bad game design that a high level enemy (probably the bat) was in King Ranpierre's Tomb, and kept dying. Also picked BLM and couldn't figure out how to cast spells without it being cancelled by melee hits. She eventually got to Dunes crabs and was being "omggggg a level! ^_^" type 2000's stuff so much that someone asked her "what is it like being trans in X?" and she had a meltdown to me that someone thought she was a tranny, kek.

Nobody cares if you don't like "grinding" you can just fuck off from the genre you zoomer trash.

Yeah this is what a lot of people don't get. MMORPGs were originally glorified chatrooms where shit was supposed to force you to figure it out from scratch with fellow players, or was supposed to be a tediously long grind but the community/social interaction was what kept you there. Now everyone bitches about MMOs lacking content, content droughts, being full of RP trannies, etc. but that's because you were never supposed to be able to log in and clear everything in a couple hours without having to interact with a single other person.
>>
>>737270898
No you didn't.
>>
>>737271191
Dear god shut the fuck up, that is not what MMOs originally were. You're talking about the DikuMUD cancer.
>>
>>737269829
just play the better FF MMO
>>
>>737271182
There is nothing about MMOs that mean they have to be an autistic grindfest. That is a choice.
>>737271239
I did though.
>>
>>737269829
Just watch some 30 hour lore recap video on youtube instead and move on, that's how you save at least 1500 hours of your life
>>
>>737271345
The whole
>uM aCkShUaLlY yUo JuSt MiSs ThE cOmMuNiTy!!!
is the most retarded midwit joshstrifehayes take from people who weren't there. I was obsessed with the game and I hated interacting with my LS. I loved the world and being in the world.
>>
>>737271402
>claims MMOs don't need grinds
>Can't name a single type of content that would make people want to log in more than once a year
hmmm curious
>>
>>737271506
I don't care about what makes broken brained subhumans keep logging in. All of you should be euthanized.
>>
This was probably the most fun I ever had in an MMO. Everything was a pain in the ass but the world felt huge and the experience was something special. I played EQ before this but I fell in love with FFXI, especially the music. I still sub every couple years to experience a little bit of that again. They've changed a lot about the game but its bones are still the same. Every time I come back to it the Vana'diel March still reminds me of late nights and endless weekends playing it 20+ years ago.
>>
>>737271589
Ok? You can close this tab now.
>>
>>737271506
>Other games figured out how to hit the same reward centers grind hits faster, more effectively, and more monetizably
>MMOs start dying off instantly
I was objectively fucking right the entire time.
>>
>>737269829
nah it's good
>>
>>737271769
Are you referring to gacha games siphoning money off of subhuman SEAmonkeys as a successful win against the MMO genre? lmao
>>
>>737269829
endgame progression took years and leveling also took forever. this was anti-rush: the game, so that’s not a big deal

>>
>>737269829
It was tedious when it was new too, you're lucky to have a wiki.
>>

Live service games in general. You can see it in a microcosm in South Korea.

I hope you're not trying to go into law or something.
>>
>>737270212
works great on controller which makes since considering it was originally a ps2 game. with luas you don’t even need to hit buttons
>>
>>737270279
Ah the good old days of gaming, where you had people print out maps to save 3,000 gil.
>>
>>737272004
Cool false equivalence. The way you see MMOs was built on exploiting psychology. The moment something showed up that exploited the same psychology more effectively is the moment most of the MMO playerbase moved on. This isn't the same thing as a shit pop star with marketing behind them outselling someone else, it's a shit pop star taking another shit pop star's gimmick and doing it better.

I'm right and you will never admit it.
>>
>>737271165
XIM is kino, a good mix between FFXI and a modern game.
>>
>>737271345
The evolution of the genre was DnD->MUDs->MMOs. MMOs were just graphical MUDs initially.
>>
>>737272481
No, a lot of early MMOs had nothing to do with MUDs, instead the evolution was D&D -> singleplayer RPGs -> online versions of singleplayer RPGs. Neverwinter Nights was just your average gold box game turned into an online multiplayer RPG. Ultima Online was an Ultima game, but online.
>>
>>737272738
The early MMO designers were quite often MUD designers. MUDs and MMOs were intrinsically linked.

>. Neverwinter Nights was just your average gold box game turned into an online multiplayer RPG
Anon, Neverwinter Nights the MMO predates the Bioware gold box game and they are not similar.
>>
>>737272154

>>

>>737271165
BTW XIM got an update and its fucking Kino, its a turn based strategy, plays like Final Fantasy Tactics, you hire a bunch of FFXI mobs and level them up and stuff, its great.
>>
>>737273492
Is that the XI mobile game they never released?
>>
>>737273614

>>
>>737273030
Player retention through grind IS exploiting psychology. Sorry you had to be informed.
>>
>>737272481
it's funny because modern "MMO"s have devolved back into MUDs with how the entire game takes place in 5-10 person instances again.

>>

It's the Final Fantasy game that was most in need of a Remake. Instead, they decided to ruin FFVII.
>>
>>737274495
Anon, XI *is* a tab target MMO. XIM just removes the jank that was already outdated even on its release and replaces it with a game you can actually play without fighting the horrendous engine and UI.
