Everyone also watched cable TV back then and there were a lot more game commercials, I vividly remember seeing Kingdom Hearts commercials for the first time and thinking the game looked cool as fuck and I wanted to play it. Digital distribution didn't matter, you just went to the store and bought the game. When you went to a game store, you also looked at all the other stuff that was out and grabbed anything else that looked interesting while you were at it. Half the games I bought back then were from me just going to stores and seeing what was on the shelves.

Literally everyone reports game and console sales in shipped numbers because of this, the only time you can report in actual sold numbers is if a game is digital only.
