when are we getting a spiritual successor?
bump
I am surprised to see a Children of a Dead Earth fan on /v/. That game is quite simply my favorite depiction of space combat in a videogame. I don't believe it is likely we'll get anything with the same level of technical depth for a long time, but COADE has had a noticeable impact on the niche of hard science fiction space combat. As somebody that has appreciated Hard-SF for a long time, even before COADE came out, it's interesting to see the aesthetic changes that game introduced into its broader ecosystem. This is particularly true for the increasingly common depiction of realistic space warships as being roughly comical in shape, and with blunted or flattened noses. Additionally, the depiction of the kinetic projectile component of space warfare as a stream of arcing projectiles was rare before COADE.The closest games we will get to Children of a Dead Earth in the near future are Spacefleet: Heat Death and the game Deep Field. Spacefleet is currently released in early access while Deep Field is very much in development, but both are on steam. There is also the game Alliance Space Guard, which I eagerly await. That game is probably the closest to Children of a Dead Earth in terms of a realistic emulation of all the systems that would be necessary for a combat spacecraft.
>>737305405>I don't believe it is likely we'll get anything with the same level of technical depth for a long timehonestly i though the module-design aspects of the game were both extremely over-simplified in terms of the underlying tech and too complicated for a combat game.imagine if counter strike asked you to design the guns you use to the poine of fine-tuning the allow of the receiver and shape of grooves in the barrel. i get spacecraft technical 'tism but its too much there's clearly 2 seperate games in there.i think a CHOADE-like space combat game with no component design (maybe very simplified KSP-like design or just ships with 'modules' you can select like switch between ) but with more pretty and visually detailed ships, more world building (big stations, orbital cities, massive orbital scrapyards, space elevators...) would be cool. maybe even 'in the black'-like for small short range skirmishes and ChoaDE-like for long distance/planatery scale combat.
>>737306192What I would prefer is either a 4X game but with orbital mechanics and realistic combat (think of a more realistic version of Terra Invicta's combat, but without the other tedium present within the game). Perhaps the strategic movement and combat would be on separate layers within the game to more easily convey a sense of the scale of strategic movement relative to tactical manuevering. I would still prefer if the broader movement in the solar system and the combat between ships (or ships and stations) all occurred within the same layer of gameplay, even if certain aspects of the game's orbital mechanics would have to be made less realistic.Failing that, I would be willing to settle for a space trading game in which you control an individual ship, but with a realistic orbital mechanics and a space-based economy. Ship interiors would be an absolute necessity for the game in any event.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_JWqtuGHOcwas fun af but dead nowhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53WTdvr-lOcis available now i thinkmy dream game is some kind of a combination of boundary+in the black+ CHoaDE. maybe like a campeign where you go from a guy with a gun to a fighter pilot to a fleet commander
This guy needs to make a cinematic already
>>737308069this?
>>737308205well yes but more than just a minute or two
yea thats the stuff
>>737302903the setting seems so interesting sadly there doesn't seem to be much story.if this had a huge interesting space opera or at least a plot like some ace attorney series or gundam level then i feel like it would gain alot more fans
>>737308262truealso imagine CHoaDE but the ships are this detailed with working telescopes, radars, spare fuel tanks....>>737308362i feel like the expanse dramatized a few fights between spacecraft somewhat well. that show was a shitshow in other aspects tho i stopped watching when they said theyre kicking out one of the actors
what is this type of realistic space military ship genre called?
>>737308605space game
>>737302903
>>737308482>the expanseI'll never forgive them for stopping where they did.Seasons 1-3 and a bit of 4 were insanely good. Only minor changes from the books and they even made them better in some regards. And then they fucking drop it when the biggest shit of the galaxy is about to hit the biggest fan in the universe.
>>737309279which one is that
>>737309351I don't know the source, it's just one of the images I had in my ships folder.
Any actually good space games?
Wish BD armory wasnt so fucked when in zero g
>>737309763ive been playing ΔV: Rings of Saturn latelyvery fun job-sim type game but you can get into fights/action if you want to.>>737309793nah never touching that game again i hope the mod scene in KSA is as big as KSP's was in the 10s.
