As somebody who couldn't really get into either, JA3 is a very sovlful modern take on JA2. There's a lot of funny interactions and while it's not as 90s-tastic, it's more like modern XCOM. I think you'd just have to get used to it being 3D and not isometric/pixelated.

That's the one thing that turns me off from it. I hate the isometric 3D look to modern CRPGs for some reason. I miss the old 2D isometric style
