Honestly, I actually liked it. I made it hard on myself by choosing Arch but this was my genuine experience in switching to Linux. Everything just works now.
Installed cachy on a different PC and had 0 issues, it just worked out of the box.
>>737329252
It's definitely real. Scummy as shit.
>>
That's the "beauty" of Linux in the end. No matter how hard will people complain about Winblows, at the end it's expected to work out of the box to satisfy people who just want to use it for work and business. Linux is just a free hobby OS so users are expected to just tinker and jump through tons of hoops while trying to fix basic issues.
Sorry to say this, but in order to have an actual "windows replacement" such a OS would need to be paid. Because people paying for their system would result in ACTUAL demand for it to be ready for everyday use without much effort.

I updated my linux system using the automatic update manager and it broke my gpu drivers which means my computer gets stuck on a black screen at boot up. Uninstalled drivers, reinstalled drivers. Still broken. Not even chatgpt knew what to do other than suggesting I install different drivers than the ones previously working just fine.

I hate microsoft and will never use it, but I won't pretend linux isn't held together by hopes and dreams.

As an average windows user who only cares about retro vidya and one or two current games, why should I use Linux over Windows?
When people say "you have more control" or "more privacy" compared to windows it means absolutely nothing to me because those are things I usually don't really put attention on
Why not just use windows and have everything running right of the bat?

Arch is insane to me. Not as a concept, I actually like it as a concept and it's one of the only relevant community run distros which is based. But having to do everything manually is ridiculous. You will miss things, misconfigure things, etc that other distros would simply do for you automatically.

It's very easy to get a basic Arch install up and running. Configuring it securely is a completely different beast.
I bet most Arch installs have effectively no security, simply because the people installing Arch have no real concept of any of this.

How is Endeavor? I was thinking about giving it a shot since Debian's leader is now a woke Indian woman with no technical ability whose only platform is DEI.

Shouldn't have fallen for the stupid Arch meme. Mint worked out of the box for me just fine. Now, did I screw it up repeatedly using chatGPT and trying to fix performance issues with my games? Yes absolutely. Does my machine still have some bizarre issue where it "overheats" while idle and shuts down on Linux compared to my Windows install? Afraid so. Do I find myself back on my Windows install most of the time lately because I need it to play my pirated h-games? Also yes.

But it did work out of the box when I started with it.

most of the popular ones are good for what they intend to do, it's just they're suited for different use cases. if your use case is "i want stuff to just work" then use fedora kde or mint or any other popular basic-bitch distro; they're all good for that purpose. if you have other needs that extend beyond what those offer, there are other options out there, but you don't need to look into them if you don't want to.

If you don't mind using Windows 11 then there's no real reason an average user would switch off. Linux is for power users who want the power to tweak every little thing exactly to their liking. Or people like me, my machine doesn't have a TPM chip and I am not buying new hardware just so I can install Windows 11, which I know I hate using because I already have that shit on my work computer.

The problem with Arch is that it was never for new users to install on their home PCs. Arch was meant to be a way for power users to build a custom OS for their specific use case, and it works amazingly for that.

People that say Arch shouldn't have an installer are correct, but usually for the wrong reason. The real reason is it isn't meant to be a daily driver OS unless you know enough that you need and can build your own custom Linux build.

Anyone that actually wants to use Arch was always better served by using a downstream distro like Endeavor, Garuda, or the current hotness CachyOS. And to answer your question, Endeavour is okay, but everything it does, CachyOS does better.
>>
>>737327926

Can you give examples of this? I'd heard Cachy did a bunch of optimizations for gaming, but I don't game anymore and the laptops I'm looking to install Endeavor/Cachy on are old. The reason I bring this up is because I'd heard Cachy makes changes that might target newer machines, and I was concerned these changes might not be ideal for my old (12 years, 9 years) laptops.

People really overcomplicate arch installation. Most of the stuff on the arch wiki is extraneous. The important bits are actually quite digestible and not at all intimidating.
1. Format
2. Install base packages
3. Install bootloader
Done. Then you can boot your brand new arch install and go pick whatever programs you want on it. Install a window manager, install steam, install your game. Install your browser. Find your h games aren't rendering moon runes correctly and go configure your locale so that they do. etc etc. There's a learning curve, but it doesn't need to be front loaded into the live cd environment where its all foreign and ephemeral.

Even archinstall covers pipewire and there's no such thing as "a game needs driver update". You don't have to set DNS unless you set up static ip for port forwarding (literally the same on Windows). Meanwhile wine/proton:
>Puts EAC inside a container unlike on Windows where you have to remove it manually
>Puts all the shitty nonSteam launchers inside a container
>Supports 16bit stuff
>has gamescope that can spoof monitor resolution, aspect ratio and Hz.

I admit you're right about that. Windows works better for turbonormies who just accept whatever slop they're fed.
But if you want actual control over your own PC, Linux is genuinely easier to set up and maintain now and has been for at least a couple years.
>Linux is just a free hobby OS so users are expected to just tinker and jump through tons of hoops while trying to fix basic issues.
That hasn't been the case outside of arch and gentoo for almost a decade. Well-maintained distros justwerk. It's on you if you choose a distro that requires you to maintain it yourself.

Closest is probably Bazzite for feel and immutability.
GNU/Linux is the operating system, the distros are just what it comes packaged with. They are all basically the same, but have slightly different use cases.
Whatever you pick will be mostly familiar to the Steamdeck desktop experience if you use KDE Plasma as your environment.
This is what people don't quite understand about linux. They think each distro is its own OS, and get paralyzed by the choices. Just pick any, it really doesn't matter.

3 seconds from BIOS to Grub, 2 seconds to login screen, 2 seconds login, browser open within 4 seconds.
Windows on the same SSD takes at least 10-15 seconds to get past its bootloader. Then it wants to always scan my hard disk for errors which takes 5-10 seconds. 2 seconds for login screen and 5+ seconds of login time. Opening a browser takes about a second longer than in Linux.
GUI wise it's identical to normies. Oh, and now Windows updates that break the system.

Give it to me straight, as someone that's still on Windows 7 on a PC I bought about 11-12 years ago running on a GTX 970. I want to get a second PC for more modern needs, what do you recommend if I want zero spyware, zero bloat and a quick and snappy OS that's as efficient as Windows 7 and gives me just as much freedom? Is there really no version of Windows 10 that just works? I used to be on it briefly when I bought an Oculus Rift all the way back when it first released, but that OS was complete shit and fucked up my PC in more ways than one so I upgraded back to 7. I assumed after all this time there'd be a more optimized, more privacy-oriented version of 10.

I meant there's no such issue on Linux lol. If all your OpenGL and Vulkan extensions are there then shit works. Weird. At that point I would rather reinstall the OS to see if that fixes it.
Speaking of audio trouble, whenever I'm listening to something on youtube the volume level for that tab goes from 100% to ~74%. Even when I manually set it back, the moment I even touch yt's video player it puts it lower again.

What the hell is up with that? It only does this on youtube.
>>
>>737356734
It doesn't. As long as you keep your boot partition is separate nothing will happen.
Lastly, it's not about the order of installation. The Windows bootloader is unable to see or boot any Linux OS. It has nothing to do with anything besides that fact.
>>
>>737331034
>>737331195

And this is another reason in the long list why Linux will never be a legitimate option for a normie. Once you start waging you need a PC that just works when you press a button, not something that requires hours of research each week to make sure you're not walking into some self-destructive trap the amateurs who larp as programmers wrote up.
Linux could be good if instead of 100 distros there were 2 or 3 actually functional ones.

Mint or PClinuxOS if you use nothing but a browser (former is generally recommended as a starting point for linux in general AFAIK)
Arch/Gentoo if you don't mind fiddling with shit
Debian if you don't want your shit to break (or devuan if you specifically hate SystemD)
Bazzite or the dozens of other gaming focused distros like Nobara and Pop_OS! for vidya
SteamOS if you only use steam
Q4OS or some other lightweight distro if you're using old as fuck hardware
Kali Linux or Qubes if you're a privacy schizo

you can just open up a built in repo on linux and install most emulators directly to your start menu
when it comes to vidya the only real disadvantage linux has is in the awkward spot of shitty jank japanese pc ports from the mid to late 2000s, those usually had to be hacked to shit to work at all on windows xp and 7 and linux doesn't stand a chance. It's faster and less bloated. A normal distro like Mint is basically plug-and-play for most games, including retro ones. The single game I haven't been able to get running on my Mint install are the Gothic games, and that's because of the specific directX sound implementation they used that doesn't have support in Steam's Proton or Wine. That's the absolute exception though, it's never happened with any other game.
>>
>>737380079
When I used ZorinOS on my old desktop I had zero issues. It really did just work and that was in 2019. I recently got an old HP Laptop and out Mint on it. KDE Plasma is unironically the thing that could get Windows users to switch if they try it. But it's only almost there, in spite of the fact of how customizeable it is. There's still a few little niggles like how something in full screen is always drawn in front, you can't drag a window in front of that full screen without setting up rules.
>>
>>737392162

Yikes. I can see how that could be interesting if you go into it with the intention of learning your way around customizing the UI, but that sounds like the opposite of something that'd make getting work done any easier. At least not until you spend time wrapping your head around how it works first.

Sounds like good practice for programming in general, though. Christ knows I don't do nearly enough of it as it is.

I assume this thread is dead and I should ask in /g/, but how does TinyCore and Alpine manage to be so fucking small while having a fully functional UI?

I know they both are a little fiddly and esoteric but like, can I achieve something comparable with Arch?

I have an i3w install (via archinstall) that only takes up like 250mb, which may well be more than good enough but it's just really neato to potentially have say a host OS that's tiny and then run VMs (like Windows with GPU passthru for gaming) and/or a "daily driver" Linux in another VM and have the safety of knowing that Linux VM can get borked by retarded shit but it won't bring down the underlying Host
>>

>how does TinyCore and Alpine manage to be so fucking small while having a fully functional UI?

No, not at that scale.
My fresh Arch install with KDE plasma used 1.3GB of RAM. With all the system services added that I want it ballooned up to 3GB.

>>
>>737395465
The thing about desktop operating systems is that people subconsciously expect a hell of a lot more to "just work" than simply having a functional point and click UI. This requires various extra services running in the background. Micro-distros omit much of this to have a system that runs on a toaster.
An Arch install can't really be squeezed into Alpine's size, since Arch packaging prioritizes functionality and sane defaults over memory economy.

What I never understood about Linux is why does there need to be 1000000 different versions (distributions, whatever) of it.

Why isn't there just ONE fucking primary "use this because it fucking works retard and everyone keeps it supported"

Is there even a "primary just use this one" distro?
>>
>>737409748
The short of the long of it is that because it is an entirely open source system, nerds are like "okay, but I don't like this thing about x distro, so I am gonna make this distro that doesn't do x for myself and everybody else that doesn't like x." Or "I would really like a distro that does x, so I am gonna make a distro for myself and everybody else that does x"
There is no "just use this one" distro because people have different priorities.

>>
>>737409748
There is one primary, it's called GNU/Linux. Every distro is just what it is packaged with.
You have 3 main parent branches:
Arch - Rolling release, always gets the latest updates as soon as they are available.
Fedora - Stable, recent updates, but not as fast as arch
Debian - Stable, slow updates, always uses the most stable and tested versions.
Every distro is based on one of these (for the most part, there's more but they don't matter.)
Each is packaged with different things for different use cases.
If you don't want to have to think about it, get a debian based one. It is the "it just fucking werks" one. It is always behind, but it is well supported. If you just want to download things off the internet like you do on Windows, a debian based one is for you.
Fedora is backed by Redhat, they have a vetted interest in keeping it both stable and as up to date as possible. Ones based on this are a good middle ground between support and updates.
Arch is the "bleeding edge" it always gets the latest kernels first. If you like to tinker this is for you.
As a gamer, you should consider:
Debian: Linux Mint.
Fedora: Straight Fedora, Nobara or Bazzite
Arch: CachyOS or Endeavour.
All of them are GNU/Linux and they are all the same thing.
>>
>>737409748
There really isn't. There's just different software tacked on top of the kernel.
