PS1/2 Silent Hill games are so weird.
The protags are in the most horrific nightmare universe hell full of abominations but they never actually sound scared.

Heather is plenty scared, she even constantly cope to herself that she's dreaming. Harry is pretty disturbed after the first Air Scream encounter. Only James and Henry are like (._.) the entire game. But they mostly leave the reaction FOR THE PLAYER. Team Silent understood that the protagonists are just avatars for the player; that the players experience the game as if THEY were there, so they don't react in the behalf of players. Perhaps you're too used to modern zoomer "horror" games where the protagonists won't shut the fuck up and are constantly gasping, screaming, and telling the player how scared they are in walk-and-talk sections.

Harry gets spooked sometimes but he mostly braves the experience due to his determination in saving his daughter. Heather is initially scared but eventually gets tired of the bullshit. But yeah the SH protagonists aren't constantly reacting

James not being scared at all is a big part of his character and makes him a lot more interesting. Initially it's weird and quirky, but can be hand waved as an extension of him being filled with self hatred and possible suicidal tendencies, or how he says "I guess I don't really care if it's dangerous or not". But after the big twist it's almost like he really has been the one to be afraid of the entire time.

God of War 2 (crazy late release for a PS2 game), Silent Hill 3, bunch of racing games. I also like Fatal Frame 3 even though it's not as high fidelity the lighting and character models look nice.

To this day, seeing the intro to MGS2 at a store demo, being rendered in real-time with all the lights and the rain and the reflective raincoat and DOF and motion blur, is the most impressed I've ever been with the graphics of a game.
