Is mirror technology really that important? or just a novelty?
It's a test to see how skilled or thoughtful a development team is.
It must be interesting to come up with, because boy is it all inferior looking to just doubling the models like 1996 RE1 mirrors.
omg. ;_;
>>737338676How would you use the scene-duplication technique to do a mirror reflection on a transparent surface like in the OP?
Parasite Eve had fully working mirrors. No one claimed it was impossible or even difficult until nvidrones tried to justify their gimmick tech
>>737336719For most games it's a novelty, a neat one but hardly important.Games like Condemned 2 and Hitman series actually have it impact the game besides a cool visual.
CUTE
>>737340238i dont know
>>737340238I think you'd have to render it with its own depth buffer and composite with alpha blending. The alpha blending would probably be the complicated bit to get right.
>>737336719>wigglesWhat did she mean by that?
>>737344490modded?
>>737336719Every graphical technique beyond simple 2D sprites is a novelty. All games can be done with like 4 colors and a bunch of large squares.
>>737344490Why is this more aesthetically appealing than many recent games with far better graphical fidelity
Man I'm like 2 hours away from finishing the game but once again, I don't want to do it. Every new game I play, once I get close to the end I can't beat the feeling of just stopping forever
>>737348935Because no smugy fake-x-anti-alias. No smugy motion blur. No fake frames. No global illumination tricks. No stupid gay-tracing gimmic shit. Pure stencil shadows. Pure artistic direction and objective. Video games is a fictional media, an escape from real life but dumb ass modern devs and """artists""" thinks hyper-realism is The Shit, it's literally just shit. Im a old school mapper spent alot time on UE3 mapping, i love those static baked lights, i take them over shitty overblown dynamic lights.

>>737336719>anon's out of body experience
Details like this blew my mind from a decade ago. Now all mirrors need to look like as if someone smeared glue all over it.
>>737353153How did they do it?
>>737353153game?
>>737336719depends on the game really. It works pretty good in survival horror because you can do spooks with the reflections, or set up cool shots like in RE1make in the mirror room showing you zombies from around the corners.
>>737348935because it was a graphics tech demo first and foremost
>>737356425far cry 1 best far cry
>>737336719If you make it a center point then it is important. We wouldn't have all these memes about lost technology and fake mirrors otherwise
>>737350015based
mirrors are a litmus test to see if the devs are brown or not
>>737336719Look at her go
spooky
>>737336719Crazy how not a single game surpassed this mirror moment
>>737363183header...
>>737336719I liked it in the blue archive event that mirrors worked. It was such a cool small detail, they could have skipped it because it's a chibi style game, but nope, they did it.
>>737336719If you are trying to make your game visually realistic, it is damn important, yeah.
>>737336719>or just a novelty? How can it be a novelty when games 3 decades ago had working mirrors?
I remember swat 4 had mirrors.
What I want is animators and scenes in games to play out more naturally FUCK i hate every game these days is just>standing>walk to position>stop>sit down>stand>crouch to inspect>hold out hand and that's it for the entire fucking game. if AI should be able to solve something its creating believable one-off animations that add character to characters
>>737336719
>>737336719It is important, but modern devs are obsessed by "doing the REAL way", and as there's no good way to do em "the real way" you get SSR shit. And no, it's not "super heavy and impossible to run twice".It's literally a fucking window with transparency over it.
>>737366160>if AI should be able to solve something its creating believable one-off animations that add character to charactersTLOU 2 did that already, with an llm. I hate that game but got to give it to them, they used an llm based animation before anyone else was talking about ai at all at the time.
Deferred rendering killed graphics engines.
>>737363183>see something fucked up happening to your body in the mirror reflection wondering if it's real or notvery underused horror trope
>>737368185>ray tracing is for reflections guys>ray tracing:
>>737368101It's that way for a story spoiler reason, the laziness was just a bonus for the devs
>>737338676I used to do that on my shitty cs 1.6 maps. It actually looked better than expected.
>>737369003>2035>devs still can't figure out mirrors
>>737368185>see, it's FOR REAL THIS TIME!>the planar reflection looks exactly like it but it's another room!>boo!
we need to kill nvidia
>>737366350>glass cracks>it stops reflecting anything at alluhh not really how it works, leaves
>>737368185RE Engine is a huge piece of shit and so is any DX12 game you play.
>>737368185Next in the line: SUPER DUPER ULTRA TRACING Featuring Dante from the Devil My Cry series on every reflection
