Did people really buy these just to play DVDs?
>>737350914No, it was a bonus. Kids wanted a game device, parents want a dvd player. Might as well buy the item with both
Yes absolutely. They were one of the cheapest DVD players around at the time.I used mine primarily to play DVD's. If i wanted to play games i had a neogeo MVS, GBA, Dreamcast and a Gamecube at the time. The PS2 was strictly for playing dvd box sets of HBO shows, Simpsons, Futurama and anime.
>>737351028how expensive were DVD players back then
people unironically bought the PS1 to play CDs.
>>737350914God it's such a sexy and timeless looking system. No clue what they were doing with the ps5 which looks like a toy. But I never knew anyone thay had it only to play DVDs. Even if people would do that half the time they turn it on
>>737350914yep, tons of people knew the PlayStation brand primarily as a DVD company. It was kind of that way with PS3 for a while too but PlayStation is mostly a premium streaming box
>>737350914Yes though if a you have a PS2 anyway you'll likely get some games too. It was cheaper than other DVD players at the time and since it's a Sony DVD player it's actually quite a good one.
>>737350997Pretty much. It was the perfect combo to convince your parents to buy it. Games for you and movies for them.
only to watch movies? no. was more like bonus feature like another anon said.dvd player prices went down after 2000. by 2001 you could get one for under $150.
>>737350914No I* bought it to play PSX games, but being able to also use it to watch movies was pretty cool too*by 'I' I mean my parents.
>>737350997My parents fucking hated consoles and videogames and always refused to get any for me, and even they eventually got me a PS2 just because they wanted to watch DVDs on it.
>>737350914everyone i knew just played games on it and had an extra dvd player, but i was also a toddler when the ps2 came out so idk.i also feel like i always had a shitty experience playing dvds on consoles, i just remember my ps2 and xbox 360 always skipping and freezing when i tried to watch something. discs were probably scratched to shit though
>>737351053About $100 for a cheap one, PS2 was $300 so no it wasn't a cheap DVD player.
>>737351373so it was like "well, I guess I can use this too we'll buy it" and not like a granny seeing a PS2 commercial and saying "I got to get that new DVD player"
I never met anyone who used a PS2 to watch movies. It wasn't until two years after buying my PS2 that I discovered it could play DVDs. My friends, who also had a PS2, freaked out when I told them. The Gamecube had a DVD version, Japan only, but never released outside of japan due to poor sales. Discontinued in late 2003 for the same reason.
>>737350914No. I bought mine to play games in addition to playing DVDs.
>>737351053$100~150 already in christmas 2000< $50 by mid 2002.
>>737350914No, it's a lie perpetuated by tendies to hide the sheer fact they got absolutely bodied
PS2 and Xbox were used for both. I played video games on it after school in the living room and on Friday night we'd watch movies on it. It made the GameCube look like shit since it could only play a fairly limited selection of games and no movies.
>25 years later and the eternaly buckbroken gamecubefag still trying to force his revisionism about PS2 (the console with the biggest game library in history) beating his nogamescube exclusively because of muh DVDSad
>>737350914no but i did watch the fuck out of some kino comedies with this bad boy
>>737352161Yeah, nobody was buying it just for the DVDs. It was the PlayStation, it's pretty unambiguous what it's for, parents had no idea that this thing was a DVD player. Having Blu-ray on the PS3 was also nice.
>>737351965Gaming was well and truly goyslop by this point.
>>737352302The difference is that while everyfuckingbody was buying a DVD player, few people gave a fuck about Blu-ray
>>737350914So being old as fuck I had one of the early dvd players before getting a ps2. It was expensive as fuck and like brand new out of the box it would regularly overheat before finishing a movie so you'd have to give it like 30 minutes to cooldown in the middle of a movie or else it would just freeze. Around launch they were slightly more expensive than every dvd player on the market by that point but they just fucking worked. Which was a big ask for dvd players back then. We went through 2 different dvd players that both had overheating issues before getting a ps2 and that fucking thing still works today.
No. I bought it because I had a massive PS1 library that it would play right out of the gate followed by the PS2 games that were to come. The DVD playback was a nice bonus
>>737351065PS1 as a CD player sucked donkey ass.Why would you buy an expensive and big ass CD player that required a plug and a TV when you could have a portable discman?
>>737351965>movie games, slop, sports, fucking shadow the edgehogevery good game on that list was also on pc which tells you a lot
by the summer of 2000 DVD players were already at around $200 USD. only poor retards bought the PS2 as a living room player.
>>737350914It was almost 50% less money than the cheapest dvd players on the market (I bought dvd player on a huge sale for $300 in 1999 but that was an extremely rare price) and going from vhs to dvd was a bigger quality increase than going from SD to HD
>>737350914Its the greatest console ever made; with amazing library of games with addition to PS1 which is also a great console.Sony really hit the homerun here back in the day with the backwards compatibility.
>>737351065>>737352831Depends on the model since early ps1's had a really nice dac inside of them. They're a bitch to find now though and with lasers now dying from just age theres no real point.
>>737350914It was a big selling point. You didn't need to buy a DVD player. It launched right when DVDs became popular.
>>737353065raped tendie cope
>>7373519652004 was far better, pic related
>>737351028>Yes absolutely. They were one of the cheapest DVD players around at the time.this is a myth revisionists made up to cope with how poorly their console did.
>>737350914i tried playing DVDs on my PS2 back in the day and it would not read the disc half of the time
>>737350914I put one random DVD with some series into mine once and it didn't work for some reason, that's it
>>737350914Some people did that for the main reason yeah, if you were in the market for a DVD player why not get one with the added benefit it can play PS2 games too? not like it was an expensive option at first in that market. I mean even if you didn't play PS2 or even have kids, if you had younger family members or something why not get that so they could play games too? There was a regular remote you could buy so you didn't have to use the controller.
>>737350914No.We already had a DVD player.
>>737351028Dreamcast and Gamecube niggers still coping to this day
>>737351768revisionists also cope by saying dreamcast and gamecube sold poorly because it couldn't play dvds lol
>>737351373why didnt they just get a real dvd player then? sounds like your parents are retarded
>>737351965>dmc 3>re4>gow 2still the holy trinity of action games to this day. crazy that they all came out the same year.
>being surprised that the NPC's who now buy E. V. mobile crematoria and movie 'games', bought a video game console to play capeshit DVD's on
Want to hear something even crazier? People bought PS3 to play games.
Bruh its crazy i didn't know there was this many unc on 4chan
