Playing an ultralib run right now. I'm debating on if accepting Everart's bribe and helping his quests is in the spirit of my character or not. Hustle, make that money, a grift would match that perfectly, right? Taking his giant cheque and doing quid pro quo jobs seems in the spirit of capitalism, does that outweigh the diametric opposition to communism his faction represents even if they aren't actually practicing those ideals specifically over standard capitalist business practices?
>>
Contrary to what /v/ insists, disco elysium is largely pro communist. It's the only ideology that is genuinely taken seriously and given real critique. The devs are also red blooded hardcore commies and proud of it.
Game is entirely built on a communist framework. For communists Fascism is just a tool that capitalism employs to crack down on socialists. This is very blatantly what we see in the game, where a highly fascist merc group is bought to strike break the dockworkers.
Fascists are largely portrayed as easy to manipulate losers and retards who really believe they can't get a girlfriend because the commies killed the king 100 years ago.

In this the game is absolutely right. All you Trump tards got played by the biggest capitalist in the world pretending to be on your side and convincing you that your lives sucks because leftoids are importing niggers and not because rich assholes like him are exploiting you so he can rape children on Epstein's island. He already broke literally every promise to you. He started a new foreign war and he made the economy even worse directly through his actions.

The ultra lib route is also displayed as fucking retarded because you're poor, and being a poor ultra lib is fucking retarded. It's fucking yourself over for no reason. The game even calls you a retard if you go ultra lib.

>Be lifted into a large regional great power because of communism

Ftfy, the Soviets never really had that much global deployment capability. Also their standard of living Warsaw pact vs NATO countries was very lopsided. Just eastern German vs western Germany was a wild comparison.

But literally any nation state in under any system or government can be a great power with that much land, that large of a population and with most of its regional rivals either caveman status (the stans, Mongolians, Chinese just went through a civil war, etc) or de facto colonies (warsaw pact).

Socialism bellyfloped when economic growth required intensive growth not just expansive growth...they already hit dim returns with the latter

What's impressive is the British on that small island was able to become a global power at one point.

did y'all play Esoteric Ebb, I'm 3.5 hours in and while I'd never suggest politics weren't a major focus of DE, I feels like this is the only focus of this one and maybe some meta jokes about DnD mechanics realized in "a real world." Then why does it trip over retarded xitter shitlib sensibilities? It's like that moment with deserter where he feels the need to point out that gommunism was down with homosex before the moralists.
>>
>>737379184
I didn't say that you dumb nigger. You can criticize something but still respect it. DE criticizes and respects communism. It clearly treats communism with way more nuance. Its a generosity it doesn't afford to the other ideologies.
Also real commies 100% support slaughtering class traitors. The pic you posted is like saying fascist are being criticized when they're depicted committing genocide. Fascists love genocide, it's not criticism to them.

>>737379343
I have no idea what you mean, but that probably doesn't matter. Internalizing the fascists thought is an active downgrade to your character and makes him take mental damage for saying fascist things because it's that retarded. You're called a retard for being an ultralib and its entire quest is about showing you how dumb you are for being a poor ultra lib. Moralists get depicted in a slightly more positive light, but are ultimately still boring cowards.
And like I told the other guy. Disco Elysium is still critical of communism. But it does respect it and depict is as the only truly correct choice.

Anon, it's a game that thinks Communism can solve all the world's problems. It believes Communism is, ultimately, the idea that things can get better. Communism, in the book, literally forestalled the end of of the world. I cannot stress more about how the game loves communism. Even if the game is also about Harry and his coping mechanisms, it is also a large sloppy suck on Communist ideology.

Yeah, it does do that. It does say "Communism has issues, and it's really hard, and it might never even work because humans are just so shit at everything". But you know what it says about literally every other ideology? Either raucous laughter or all-consuming resentment. Or both.

Nah it's also the system of stable governance (king didn't have much power compared to other monarchies and legislative bodies are value stability) and ability to rapidly adapt to economic and technological changes due to going back wild on free trade and having strong property rights laws where some noble couldn't just butt ducks a merchant/businessmen. Strong contract laws.

Cope nigger. No idea why the deserter pointing out that commies have actual ideals and the moral-intern only allowed homosex after it became profitable is somehow a bad thing according to the game's own politics.

>>737380280
Not entirely. In game communism has been tried and it was fucking fantastic till foreign super powers came along and obliterated it with high power artillery fire. In DE communism really is the solution to everything, the world really would have been a utopia if the coalition wasn't so but mad about it.
The Clairs aren't really a communist. They're a social democrat. The communism quest even spells it out for you. The only real commies in the game are the commie quest students and the deserter.

I just found its arguments for moralism lacking.
>we are studying how to make things better, it will take time. Plus change should be introduced incrimentally to not upset the balance of how things are now
That sounds very reasonable. Bemoaning "aww its not happening fast enough!" Or "bro we need change now!" Is a non argument when you either don't know what change is needed or how to get there is equivalently less than obvious. Moralism by definition uses status quo as a baseline, so its self evident that moralism means not radically changing things away from what they are now, but it just seems like "baby out with the bathwater" if our options are to radically change or to keep the status quo and make NO changes. Moralism isn't saying it would do nothing, it just had no deliverable results ONLY BECAUSE the results that changed things to what they are today isn't considered moralism, yet its the same as the change that was adopted coming out of the conflict era.

>>737381164
>ignoring the intrinsic nature of a game
They made the game have mechanics for a reason, anon. It could have just been an animated short story, but they wanted to tell a tale that involved player input. Well, player input says being a communist is rad and that you will never fail with communism at your back. I even played on the ""Hard"" mode.
>>
>>737381147
The ultimate revelation for moralism isn't that it will "Take time" for things to get better, it's that the future will never arrive because Moralism sells itself on that very future. The horse can never get the carrot.
>>
>I play adventure games to WIN the BEST way!
Bro, do you play Sierra games like this too because of the score?
>>
>>737381042
>>737381525
This game literally prides itself on the fact that some of its most interesting content is locked behind *failing* skill checks. You swinging your dick around over those couple extra levels really doesn't mean shit in the grand scheme of things.
>>
>>737381820
Only the Red skill checks let you progress while failing, actually. All the white ones can still simply lock you out of progression on optional content. Red are essentially impossible to fail, which is why they wrote good content for both.
>>
>>737381591
I'm fine being stuck in a Zeno's paradox because, if the system is working for good, the lack of obvious change happening is a sign that change doesn't need to be, and likewise incrimental change implies only so much change is needed. The US Constitution's preamble states
>"We the people, in order to form a more perfect union..."
"More perfect" is an oxymoron, if perfection were achievable it would be a binary state, you are either perfect or you aren't. So to be "more perfect" is to appreciate the good you have now and to creep in better and better, but its also to acknowledge we will never be finished and content, we will never reach an acceptable definition of "perfect". So is it that the horse will never get the carrot, or the horse slowly has reached enough carrot to take tiny bites out of, and at this point the horse has eaten enough of the carrot to the point where crumbs remain?
>>
>>737381940
Do you feel like a particularly satiated horse, anon? Do you think most people feel like satiated horses?
>>
>>737381820
>tried to run from Garte when he spoke about my tab
>failed Savoire Fair check
>almost hurt Lena crashing into her
>Garte then gives me the discount on the drinks
You just have to know what is and isn't going to happen through trial and error, though common sense helps a whole lot of it. The game let me try to intimidate Cunoesse with Kim's gun when I was about to try to shoot down the corpse, so when it let me make a physical instrument check in targeting and firing at her, I assumed passing would let me barley miss her ala a warning shot to be the ultimate form of intimidation and failing the check would he that I actually hit her. It was the other way around; missing made me miss and she laughed at me, succeeding the check was an instant game over for the murder.
>>
Is the commie faggot who made this piece of shit game still stuck at the loony bin?
>>
>>737382186
That check is a red one, it is impossible to fail. He gives you the discount either way.
>and then in this subversion
You shot a child you dingbat. Why would you think succeeding at "Shooting the child" would do anything but shoot the fucking child?
>>
>>737382072
When we discuss such opinions, what do we compare it to? I feel blessed to be with abundance of food, water, air conditioning, a selection of career choices, education, entertainment, and a restrictive but still existant healthcare system. I could expect more, but I also could live (less happily) with less. Do others have what I have? Do those people who have less, would they be content if they had what I have? Will a human ever be content?
I'm very happy my current protests and change advocacy are related to big tech lobbiests and the government trying to strip away our privacy and dick consumers with anti consumer practices. I don't think those elements of society today are acceptable, but my answer to your question could and probably would change quickly if we compared that to an era of slavery in the nation, for example. It's not perfect now, but the changes and betterment we experience today is marginal and incremental compared to the changes that needed to take place yesteryear. A lot like graphical improvements in games over the generations; many argued that 3d graphics peaked gens ago and we're just adding more tris and resolution to monitors, games are becoming bloated and inefficient causing rendering needs to astronomically tax GPUs harder at an exponential rate but for disproportionate returns.
>>
>>737382851
Policy isn't graphics. Policy doesn't inevitably slide towards some goal of good society. Policy gravitates towards the least that can be done to prevent opponents from gaining power.
>will a human ever be content
I don't know, Notch has 2 billion dollars and seems pretty content. Your comfort level has been raised mostly by technology, not policy.
>>
>>737382295
>Why would you think succeeding at "Shooting the child" would do anything but shoot the fucking child?
Devil's in the details.
If I recall that option is preceded with telling her to shut up and loose your cool. Using the gun for intimidation is your way of trying to regain control. It stands to reason then that you wouldn't attempt to genuinely attack the child, but are trying to do something dangerous to reach your goal of getting her to shut up and nothing more, so one would also imagine fucking up this very dangerous idea would have fatal consequences. Harry is being immature and temperamental, I would not assume he completely loses it and intends to commit armed assault, let alone on an innocent child.
>>
>>737383048
Anon you are Harrier Bubois, deeply mentally ill cop. You are his brain. What you tell him to do, he does. Threatening a child with a gun is already fucking unhinged, even if the child is some garbage can psycopath that deserves to die.
>>
>>737381042
>I ended my communism run with like 9 or 13 or something extra levels.
You're exaggerating. Per the wiki you could get up to 5 extra levels by picking every single communist option in the entire game. But you already lose a point each in 2 different skills by taking it, so it's really a net gain of 3 if you commit to pure min maxing. That also ignores anything taking alternative dialogue options would give you. Meanwhile you take the fascism thought and you get +2 to all physical skills the moment your lips touch a beer bottle, and in exchange you take some occasional, easily heal-able morale damage.
>>
>>737383192
Oh, I had extra help. I also didn't much need the skills that it negatively impacted. I'm not exaggerating, I think I also maximized gain from the "Look at shit" skill. I cannot stress enough that three extra skills is three rerolls where it matters, not just three good rolls. Hell, I repeatedly reacted to red rolls by just boosting them through the roof with my bonuses.
>>
>>737383156
True but hitting Cuno to get him to shut up is also unhinged, but yielded good results. The loading screen literally hints to you "cops can get away with so much compared to the average guy, try some crazy things sometime". Like I said, sometimes what Harry will do and what the player is reading and being alluded that he will do aren't always the same. I remember the white check with Joucr where Harry literally can't think of what to articulate but is trying to ask about reality, " reach out to nothing and ask 'what is this?'" or something. How the fuck do you know what he's going to do then? Do all passing checks lead to good outcomes? No, and that's what makes Dean Domino so great in Fallout New Vegas, but in these contexts if failure is apparent (holding a gun at someone) typically the fear is the failure would be worse than the success.
>>
>>737383780
I think literally only shooting the child in the face leads to a particularly bad outcome. Also trying to kiss your wife. So only OBVIOUS TRAP OPTIONS.
>>
>>737383983
kissing her didn't give me a game over, she just didn't respond at all. I don't know if that is what caused the Reptilian Brain to tell me that I will have this dream every night or not.
>>
>>737384064
It's not a game over, it just leads down a rougher path. I never got the worst dialogue from her, I assumed that was because I didn't go in for it. It was a mildly awkward and uncomfortable confrontation.

>>

Already perfect. I like when failing a skill check doesn't content block you, but gives a different outcome. The karaoke is the perfect example.
>>
>>737380154
Haven't really thought about it and haven't read the book, but to be fair, communism is kind of just a word for when serfs get tired of being abused by their rulers and think they can fix the situation. Maybe in an ideal world they could fix it by redistributing a little wealth here and there, but usually it ends with trigger happy psychos in charge.
>>
>>737385716

Nothing. He needs you to finish the case. You only get the bad end where Vicquemare tells you you're off the force and they abandon you if you completely fuck up and act like an unrepentant sperg through the whole debrief.
>>
>>737385927
That is actually something I dislike.
I actually felt punished for missing out on stuff by doing it the 'correct' way and planning out how to pass checks.
One of the simplest examples is getting the body down.
If you look at that and say that's too hard I'll come back when I have the red skill to get it down, you miss a whole series of dialogue and even a thought perk.
or another right at the start of the game, if you don't try to run away because you know you'll likely fail to you end up paying more money unless you take the even more bizarre option of threatening him.
There isn't much room for a sorry cop.
