Sonic is the game series I grew up loving over all else, but I consider Generations the informal end of the franchise. Yes, the 2000s games were mostly shit, but at least they were interesting, fun, appealing shit, which none of the 2010s or 2020s titles can even remotely attest to being. Lost World and Forces were sub-mediocre. Frontiers is one of the most embarassingly poor pieces of entertainment media I've ever blown my life on. The one glimmer of hope, Mania, turned out to be nothing but a sub-par "best of" game crippled by poor creativity and a critical lack of design focus. I couldn't even muster up the energy to try Superstars because it just looked so generic. It's been clear for the last 15 years or so that the main element of the series is no longer the games, but the memes, movies, and random branded merchandise. Those things keep the character popular and relevant, but they represent the series' stuffed corpse:forever present and available, but with none of the life that made it good in the first place. Fuck Aaron Webber, fuck Twitter, fuck Hollywood, and lastly and most importantly, nuke Israel.

The easy answer is everything has gotten worse. The hard answer is we're all older now and "same game but #3/4/5/etc" gets dull. Yes some series try to reinvent themselves to appeal to the next audience and fail miserably because they don't get kids or kids just don't want Dad's hand-me-downs. And we can easily identify that as the series got worse. But the inevitability of time is the biggest reason our old toys aren't good anymore.
