However, its achievement in visual effects, that were absolutely vital to its story working, and on a comparatively tiny budget, was worthy of the award. Same reason it was right to award Godzilla Minus One the Oscar for VFX, maybe you would find MORE visual effects and more high end, high budget visual effects in GOTG Vol 3, Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning or The Creator, that year, but as far as achieving great effects central to the film on a mere 10-15 million (estimates vary) budget, it is an incredible achievement. Mad Max Fury Road is one of the best action films of all time, and ought to have won more Oscars at that ceremony, particularly Best Director over that flimflam Inarritu. However, as terrific as the visual effects were in Fury Road, I had no problem with them awarding it to Ex Machina, the work there with limited resources was superb.

Literally, since the latter kinda bombed. A24 are a studio that can take risks on weird or not very commercially friendly projects since they keep budgets mild. Like giving Ari Aster free rein on Beau is Afraid, they must have known in advance they were basically throwing money in the trashcan and audiences would never be on board with what he was gonna make, but they still went for it. They produced all of Garland's films since Ex Machina except for Annihilation, so I can see them being happy to give him free rein on Elden Ring too, even with their largest budget ever riding on it, since it does have a brand name that's gonna be worth something on a marquee, and can offset it being undoubtedly R rated and probably pretty bizarre.
