how good was this dashboard?
Bloated. Achivements and etc bullcrap are pointless, the game should just instantly start if there's one inserted. If not it should just start from digital game selection with zero fluff
>>737377741Soulful, but not as good as the PS3's.
>>737377741I loved it.
Mogged by xmb
>>737377741Very bad, but that is because I am not a gay sexual.
>>737377741Blades were good.
All everybody did is bitch and moan about how terrible the blades were until they were changed and then everybody missed them.
>>737377861this, I stopped playing consoles because of their stupid landing pages. If I wanted that I'd use a fucking computer.
It was OK.
>>737378027the only thing I miss about PSP
>>737377741og xbox had a cooler dashboard
>>737377997Yeah functional wise it was dogshit and confusing having everything stuffed somewhere. But it was soulful and unique adding a lot to the Xbox brand. The next iteration is comfortable to use before they reredid it to shove ads everywhere later
an order of magnitude better than the not-a-mii powerpoint ui later
This was the best one, and the one I think of when I think 360
>>737378136>soulful UI>soulful console designif it wasn't for rrod and AA battery powered controller the console would beat and bury snoystation
>>737377861>the game should just instantly start if there's one insertedThat's idiotic. There were digital games.
>>737378069Bought a brand new PSP in 2011, maybe 2-3 years later the battery went pillow mode and I've not touched it since.
>>737377741I never noticed how much wasted space was on the sides with this UI. Its still the most soulfull of the 360 Dashboards but i can see why the changed it.
>>737378283Which I addressed.
It only ever made sense on the short period of time where games were still disc only, once XBLA and GoD started it became a nuisance getting into your digital library.
>>737378365360 came out during the transition from 4:3 to 16:9. Prob was built for 4:3 in mind
I really miss getting hate messages.
>>737378361the games themselves were downgrades of proper console ones, IDK why anyone ever wanted to have a PSP as their main shit
>yfw never had an Xbox so never got to enjoy the cool system menus Playstation was cool but the ui was always very sterile. Even though the ps3 allowed custom icons and wallpapers.
>>737378251Someday sony will need to go back to AAs when the EU declares internal batteries that cant be easily replaced illegal in controllers like they have with cell phones. Those controllers having internal batteries is an admittance that the build quality is shit, they damn well know the controller will fail before the battery.
>>737378593I have my PS4 gamepad for 7 years now and it works just fine
>>737377741It didn't lag. It got so bad in the later UI, that you could even play mp3's anymore.
>>737378775*couldn't
>>737378503> IDK why anyone ever wanted to have a PSP as their main shitpsp wasnt really for the casual crowd. they went more towards the ds so the people buying psp's werent using it as their main shit
>>737377741one of the last soulful dashboards before they all became quite fucking literally the exact same thing.
>>737377741It was great but only because there was a relatively limited amount of information to display. It wouldn't hold up today. Also a ton of wasted screen space because loads of people still had 4:3 displays back then and it had to support them.
>>737378593I heard that the legislation only mandates that the battery is easily replaceable with a screwdriver which already is true, i replaced the battery of both my DS4s last year with brand new chineseum stock ezpz.
>>737378892PSP was used as a multimedia device perhaps even moreso than the PS2 was. And game-wise i aimed mostly for the weeb crowd, especially at the end of its life.
>>737379659It's just a shame how storage hadn't quite gotten cheap yet considering all the things it was good at. Video squished down to the native 480x272 resolution was pretty light on filesize, all things considered, yet 2GB and 4GB cards were in the hundreds of dollars price range. Felt like a weird mismatch that held the PSP back until late into its lifespan.
>>737380073sony was just really jewish with their storage formats. nowadays you can just get a mircosd adapter and it works well. it's really neat seeing how much potential the psp has especially when you mod it
>>737380403Psp was cool, it's issue was always the library. Pretty much just scuffed non canon sequels to ps2 games by c tier devs
>>737377861The default setting (at launch) for both the Xbox and Xbox 360 was to boot into whatever was in the disc drive.
Controversial opinion on this board but achievements and gamerscore were cool for the first couple of years. I remember replaying levels and feeling really great getting a higher gamerscore as a kid AND Microsoft had a discount program thing if you hit certain milestones. It was a cool idea.I think they just overstayed their welcome like who gives a fuck post 2011, and most devs don't actually make cool achievements that you have to go out of your way instead just putting in complete chapter 1/2/3/4 filler shit or just use a weapon in a way that it's going to pop by just playing like headshots with a sniper rifle or some shit
The 360 along with the blades dashboard were an immediate asthetic downgrade compared with what came before
A truly underrated feature of the 360 was it's music player. Worked while playing games and you could start it right from the guide menu. Being able to plug your iPod in and shuffle your whole library felt pretty futuristic at the time. It still works with modern android phones
>>737381570Yeah I used to have 3 day grace and Green Day play in the background while I farmed in borderlands. It was so easy too with zero subscriptions. Shit is uniorionically is more of a headache now than back then
>>737378248console UIs peaked here
>>737381570I used to just buy CDs and rip them to the console and have my TV output to my Sony stereo from the coax out on the TV into a coax to rca adapter I got from Radioshack. I rarely even used the CD player in the stereo.
>>737378459I had a 4:3 when I got my first 360 in 2006 and the UI fit perfectly. You didn't see the gray space.
>>737382284I remember my family getting us a used original Xbox for christmas one year and the previous owner had ripped probably 30-40 CDs to the hard drive. All the old Kanye albums, System of a Down, 50 Cent.
>>737382496I remember dead rising 1 being unplayable for so many people from th text being so fucked if you didn't have an hd tv
>>7373817807th gen started with the most feature rich consoles ever. So many features that most people don't even know exist. The 360 had a whole media suite with a winXP matching UI. PS3 could connect connect to a regular office printer and print things from the HDD or any of the media slots. The Wii can output 240p for Virtual Console games when playing on a CRT. Lots of neat stuff that got forgotten, buried in menus or straight up removed.
>>737382596I did that on my OG Xbox too but only a select few games let you have a custom soundtrack. That was such a fucking cool feature. That was one of many disappointments going from 7th to 8th gen for me.
>>737382868Being able to use your music for entrance themes in wrestling games was the best. Me and the boys still once in awhile get hammered and throw on WWE13 and do 30man Royal Rumbles. We have an ever growing roster of custom wrestlers. When someone comes up with a funny character/celeb + entrance theme combo, We add em.
>>737377741Looks horrible
>>737377741the only thing i can remember was it felt quick and the shit they replaced it with got slower and slower as time went on
>>737381570Ps3 had the same thing and was based
>>737383389Unfortunately only a small list of PS3 games let you play music while in game. Meanwhile you could play your music over every game on the 360. OG Xbox games worked too as long as you started your music before the game.
the blades dashboard could have been improved in some areas but i would still say that did a very good job with it. I would have preferred if it hadnt drifted so far away from the original XBOX dash aesthetic, but i still like it a lot. it had soul, was unique, creative, implied a certain level of thought and effort went into it, and in a similar way that good architecture has a positive effect on peoples mindsets, seeing something like this improves the user experience even if people dont actively register or notice it happening. if you claim to hate or dislike the blades dashboard and think what we have today is better, you are a corporate apologist, low IQ, or simply a contrarian. perhaps all of the above. The UI matters and its like having a nice car that drives well, with a nice interior you see every time you operate it. its part of the finished product. even if you usually are looking at the road, you still see the interior every time you drive the car. only someone super fucking autistic and psychopathic would want a car that drives really well but doesnt care that the entire inside is uncovered metal, or white lawn chair plastic. which is essentially the quality of UI we have had for the last decade+.
>>737378248this is like a 6/10. its not the worst thing ive seen but to say this is memorable or excellent in anyway is nonsense. this looks like some kind of corporate multimedia center, and thats exactly what xbox was pivoting towards with the brand instead of focusing on the games first. this lacks any sort of identity and just looks generic. its too soft looking. blades dash by contrast looks more in line with a powerful piece of hardware and something to take seriously. but i can see it being too aggressive looking for some soccer moms i guess.
>>737381146achievements were really cool at the time for a couple years but i think the problem was the total lack in quality control in how they were set up. what killed it for me was a game having a bunch of total bullshit retarded ones that were unreasonable and just seems like a total waste of time. or something that require a shitload of luck you didnt have much control over. no quality control. a good example of an achievment in mymind was the one for beating deadspace 1 with just the plasma cutter because it really is a sign you got good at the game, but its not that hard. it just requires you to get good. plasma cutter is versatile enough that you should be able to beat the game with it despite some challenge here and there. an example of a retarded achievement would be something like dead rising 1 when you have to kill 53k zombies manually in one playthrough requiring you do get in a truck and run zombies over for hours.and a unreasonable one would be halo 3, with the 2 for 1 achievement. where you need to play in free for all, pick up a spartan laser, charge it up, and in one shot kill 2 players. you cant do it in a team based game so that means you need to just hold the spartan laser and wait for 2 people to get close fighting and hope you can somehow get them in the same blast. how many fucking rounds will you need to play trying to find a spartan laser? will you even have time to switch to it and charge it up or will you miss it? maybe the players will shoot eachother and not try to melee? maybe someone will kill you right before you do it. its just retarded.
>>737378248xblades and this one are my two favourites.
>>737378251I fuggen love the design aesthetic of 360
