Fun only up/getting over it style game with interesting movement mechanics. There's perfect jumps and a glide system with a nice amount of nuance to it. Level design is nothing to write home about, but the character is fun to move around and mastering the movement feels great. Not bad for the price.

I'm like 15 hours into Divided Reigns now and not sure if I feel motivated enough to finish it
Mechanically it's pretty competent, but also has kinda gotten old with nothing new being introduced other than party member shakeups
So basically asking you if there are some interesting mechanics coming in the next 40-50 hours, or if you think the story is super worth seeing through to the end (I like some of the characters, but it hasn't super gripped me either, I find the MCs backstory kinda weird/vague at this point, like how are you as a Captain both instrumental in destroying a country and at the same time pretty much oblivious to the harm you caused until the campaign is over)

Lovecraftian horror-metroidvania with godtier atmosphere, utterly hardcore difficulty, and with no generic le tentacles. If you liked ESA, La Mulana, and grew on NES, you'll probably get into this one too.

Dark jrpg in vein of Dhux Scar and Seraphic Blue, with custom made combat and decent story/chars. For those who are into RPGMaker stuff from its golden age.

Atmospheric jrpg in Laplandian horror setting, the sprites are somewhat wacky, but the atmosphere and the music are top notch. For those who like paranoidal subtle horror vibes like Lavender Town in Pokemon etc.

Story driven platformer with godtier artstyle, cheap 3 frame animations, and weird clunky combat. The dialogues alone written by a lonely Lithuanian schizo dev make it worth playing.

The story isn't the greatest in some parts, sure. I'd say the enjoyment came from exploration and the amount of equipment opportunities you had, although admittedly the body part-focused combat system became a bit grating over time. It was nice to be able to equip someone with a bow or sling over a sword so they could fuck up birds, for example. You should get a boat soon and then an airship. I need to finish it too, there's honestly a lot of content.

Story becoming a bit less linear and letting me explore more freely is actually also kinda motivating, I'll keep going a bit then

whats the point if you can't fugg them bro...
also, rogueLITE, it is nothing like Rogue
>>
>>737436045
>also, rogueLITE, it is nothing like Rogue
Mystery dungeon games are indeed roguelikes. It's a turn-based grid-based RPG where the player and enemy turns are resolved at the same time. Also has the randomized level layouts (complete with the format of square rooms of various types connected by hallways) and a focus on item manipulation. Permadeath and ASCII text graphics are tertiary aspects that don't define the gameplay of roguelikes. Though this game also has elements that simulate some of the gameplay concepts of permadeath, such as the player character reverting to level 1 upon leaving a dungeon.
>>
>>737436663
But you control multiple characters, thus, it is not a Roguelike.
>>
>>737435898
Seconding this, though I haven't played the sequel yet.
>>
>>737436905
They function similar to how pets do in Nethack, which I'm sure you also consider a roguelike. You cannot control your party members directly, though you can change their AI behavior modes and restrict which moves they're allowed to use. In the sequel you can also request them to use a specific move on the next turn. Otherwise they move and act on their own while trying to follow the player.
>>
>>737437103
Alright, you win. I concede. I'll argue that it's conceptually a roguelike.

Puzzle game where you invert gravity. Lot less about platforming compared to VVVVVV and more just puzzle solving. Not sure why this one's so hidden considering there's a decent crossover between weebs and puzzle game lovers. The concept isn't anything new and it's not that hard, but it teases your brain enough and puts a smile on your face with its upbeat atmosphere. Solid weekend game.

You definitely need to appreciate difficult platforming to enjoy it, but I don't know about precision; it isn't tagged for that on Steam, and with the hardest 2D platformer on my resume being DKC Returns I haven't felt out of my element in the first ~60 levels.
Figuring out level solutions typically isn't complex, grabbing the collectibles along with it can be. I've had to skip a few because I couldn't figure out the order of operations.
As someone who loved Donkey Kong '94 but wanted more of a challenge, it's scratching that itch well.

Translation is very engrish in 2 especially, but the game is pretty straightforward to understand. If you haven't played any mystery dungeons or traditional roguelikes before, expect to receive a little bit of a booty paddling though the remaster of the first game is quite a bit easier than it's original version. Biggest challenge is going to be coming to terms with unidentified items once you reach the first dungeon that has them. Just don't be too hasty with equipping lots of random gear you find lying around since sometimes they're cursed. You lose all your items when you die, but if you talk to the insurance bee at town you can put insurance claims on your gear which lets you recover them for free after death. You also always revert back to level 1 upon returning to town even if you didn't die, but your friends keep their levels. Expect to find many foxes in your pockets.

Have fun and enjoy the monsters. And I almost forgot, be sure to set the difficulty to "roguelike" in the remaster. It sets it to "casual" by default for some reason, which is piss easy and removes some of the gameplay mechanics. 2 has a difficulty selector before you start. You can also hold the "next page" and "previous page" keys together (I think they're A and S by default) to unlock hard mode if you wanna be a badass. I don't think the remaster ever tells you this.

>>737463014
going into loop is only necessary for a couple of achievements and for chasing high scores. simply beating the final boss is enough to go up a gear
the jump in difficulty for G1 is real though, you're going to have to deal with the bosses always having their loop attack patterns during pre-loop, which gave me a bit of trouble when I was starting out against the not-Throne.
in my opinion it's always worth doing a loop once you beat the final boss, you get access to your character's final upgrade which is usually stupid strong as a final upgrade before the game aggressively tries to kill you in loop.

that's one of the not-crowns that you can equip if you want, in my opinion doing a run with it is the hardest achievement to get (even the realism badge isn't that hard when you realize that boosting and turbos lets you break through the lethal walls). But getting a gold medal on some of the achievements are significantly harder, but that's if you want to go above and beyond.

You might enjoy Time Break Chronicles or Splintered if you're looking for more along the same lines. Personally I didn't really like Splintered since the classical Dragon Quest style gameplay didn't transition over well to a roguelite, but you might be different.

And also, I know a fair number of people who get filtered by the art style for the game. It's a shame because I think it legitimately looks good when you're playing it and see how cohesive it actually is in practice.

Loved this shit. I dont know why all female enemies were anthros witj big tits but i wont complain. Wish the belly dancers in the hub world did something.

Only two issue was that the merchant that you can trade your unwanted weapons for upgrade materials, didnt knew about him until halfway into the game. The other issue is that the game needed to be longer, the ambiance, the weapons, the enemy design, all great but the game is over super quick

Road trip to a safe place during the apocalypse with RPG elements. Solodev.
Pros:
- Cool concept and executed well
- Lots of systems that interact with each other
- Driving is surprisingly enjoyable just don't expect a driving sim
- Some apocalypse related events like corpses falling from the sky or gates to hell (you can get in)
Cons:
- Looks quite ugly
- Lots of jankiness especially the user interface and its controls
- No online coop
- Not a lot of POIs and random gen isn't varied enough for the length of the game (2000km to travel)
- There's a few abuseable elements that make it very easy to snowball at which point the game becomes a breeze

There's a big update coming "soon" apparently.

>>
>>737480824
Not him but my personal cutoff for hidden gem status is about 200 reviews or lower.

>0-50 reviews
literally no one else knows about this game
>50-100 reviews
people in highly specific communities might be aware of the game
>100-200 reviews
the game is starting to branch out from said community but is still hidden

Wonder Boy in Monster World on Mega Drive was one of my favourite games as a kid, it was the first game i played with what would be known as Metroidvania elements and it gave the world this feeling of wonder, like there could be anything out there... I should replay some time
Or just get that game, but i hate that art style, i need pixels
>>
>>737480970
Review numbers are a factor of awareness. If you had no clue about the existence of Terraria that wouldn't suddenly make it a hidden gem. Otherwise everyone will just post popular shit and call it a hidden gem, rendering the thread useless.

Agreed, though I wouldn't say hard cutting off at a specific number is reasonable, it's basically forcing a particular range of popularity to become even more ignored than the actually super hidden games. Would a sequel game with 300 reviews be considered a hidden game if the first game had over 1000 reviews? It's too subjective a topic to be arguing about it with purely objective metrics.

>Would a sequel game with 300 reviews be considered a hidden game if the first game had over 1000 reviews?
I think so, actually. It's not uncommon for sequels to come out and for no one, not even the fans to see it. Soundodger for example was a reasonable success, but none of that transferred to the sequel. Same with Gunlocked to Gunlocked 2.

This isn't really to put an objective measurement on the review range but rather that people really should think more about what they're gonna share as a hidden gem.
>>
>>737481668
I saw it happen with Freedom Planet 2, but the game costing 25 bucks might've had something to do with that. The developers also refuse to lower the price even four years later, which is kinda retarded.

i liked it mainly because of the art and the atmosphere, the developer is very talented in this regard
i didn't enjoy the combat very much though, i prefer brainless steamrolling, this game requires you to use your brain a little bit and be careful, i'm not a big fan of that
still a good game though, strongly enjoyed

So I finally got around to this one and it's surprisingly good, I don't know if anyone else has tried the combination dating sim and detective novel thing.

You have to tread a fine line because women are naturally manipulative but some are just lusting after an older man, while others may be deliberately trying to seduce you to throw you off your investigation. Still others might not trust you with certain details until you flirt with them a bit.

Maybe staring at someone's breasts is the right move in certain circumstances, or maybe they deliberately took their shirt off to draw your eyes away from something incriminating. Both occurred. The first time the game asked me if I wanted to ogle some breasts I figured "Why not, it couldn't hurt?"

I got suspicious a minute later though and reloaded to check. She had been attempting to distract me and looking at her breasts mean you miss some evidence sitting in plain sight.

So yeah, the better detective game that came out this month, I think. The other one I played was Moses and Plato.

>>
>>737484970
It's not coomerslop. The game has no sex or nudity. It's a horror game that has some sexy costumes and that's it. The dev is also very passionate and he's releasing a free DLC soon.

One of the successes, every so often I pull it off and a demo I enjoyed and attempted to talk about actually caught on around here. It was neat because you could read the developer's blogposts and a sudden random wishlist spike corresponded with the exact day I made a thread that got to the bump limit.

The game itself did extremely well for a solo developer, he made hundreds of thousands of dollars he doesn't have to share with anybody. The sequel hook at the end of the game might end up being real. Or maybe he was just going to do a DLC to explain it I forget.

As if I'd give a fuck what a review says. You ever read those things? They're retarded. No no no. I only trust my own evaluation of a video game. Nobody else's. The review quantity is strictly to indicate how many other seekers have discovered the gem I found.

Usually the reviews are whining about the difficulty, or they've done some dumb shit like purchasing a survival horror game and throwing a tantrum about tank controls. Or the foreign language reviews are overwhelmingly negative because of nonsensical drama I don't give a fuck about, as occurred in Tokyo Psychodemic.
