Whats wrong PRAD?
Don't you like the story rich experiance, PARD?
>>
the dragon quest movie had a cool twist on that, but fumbled it midway. the ancient evil was basically a destructive rogue ai (revealing the game's world was a simulation). something whose mere existence was far beyond the characters' comprehension, unimaginably powerful. felt like a better representation of ancient evil then just "bigger monster with higher stats." the movie was pretty cool up to that point, and the big bad's entrance was really cool. but then it awkwardly broke the fourth wall and resolved itself poorly. I wish it would've just played it straight.

That's not what Paradise Lost is about. That's what people who never read Paradise Lost and are just guessing think it's about. I wonder if a trope exists for people who misrepresent PL and think Milton wrote Satan as an antihero. On topic though: zombies. Just zombies in any way shape or form. Stay away from that shit as a writer it never goes anywhere good.

When the game is trying to set up some form of “oh my god you did evil thing” but doesn’t have any way around it but then acts like it got you. Like I was playing far cry 5 and there was a part where you shoot one of your friends as part of a story beat while you’re rushing through an area, but I realized in time and kinda just sat there and tried to find ways to not do it, and couldnt so I basically had to kill him.

Then the game did the stupid “WOAHHH HAHA WE GOT YOU! YOU DIDNT EVEN NOTICE IT WAS YOUR FRIEND HAHA, YOU JUST FELL FOR OUR TRAP YOU STUPID!” Like I fucking hate when games do that. It’s astounding to me that even fucking call of duty (BO2) of all things managed to give you a way out of your were smart enough

There's no traditional internet, therefore there's no traditional form of information transfer. Anon, you have wireless comms and wirelessly hack enemies in the fucking tutorial. Traditional forms of information transfer and the internet absolutely exist, just not the World Wide Web.

The reason you're not haunted down immediately is because the chase at the start was basically just for the sake of appearance. Everyone involved knows you didn't do fucking shit and the second you took too much effort to scapegoat on the spot everyone focused down on the internal turmoil and figuring out what to do with the corporation losing its founder.

VC4 did this right, because the protag is your average japanese beta male, but at the very end of the game he's ready to nuke everyone to shit, and then HQ tells him that the enemy surrendered and he no longer has to fire the warheads. But he's lost everything to war already, and he even sent his best friend (and a NPC soldier of your choice) to death, so he barely stops himself from pushing the button. But he knows that his rage will consume him eventually, so he quits and leaves before he does something stupid, like starting a revolution and dragging more people into a stupid conflict.

Not entirely related, but Minecraft does this, if I remember right.
(I always have keep inventory or some grave / death chest mod on, and I'm keeping that on until Mojang decouples item despawn distance from render/simulation distance. I get sick of my shit disappearing ages before I get there just because I'm playing on a decent PC / handheld.)

Still though, letting enemies have access to equipment outside of their norm is always a risk for a game to implement. I remember either Titan Quest or Grim Dawn (probably both?) having a system where enemies use what they'll drop (if applicable) and sometimes you'd just get one-shot by a random enemy just because the nigga spawned with The Fuck You Sword of Instant Death + 9999999999, or they barely take any damage because they're wearing some helmet with 9999999999 defense and 9999999999999 HP regen.

This trope is okay if the MC gets completely FUCKED for trying to be a good boi hero, and then spends the rest of the game murdering the shit out of any other villains.
I will even accept a redemption arc at the end of a story like that where the MC does realize that there's some value in mercy again.

So what? If those are optional you just unlocked yourself a new challenge. Like I said you don't fight them naked because they aren't even in the prison anymore.
It would also mean the game itself has a lot of bullshit in general where all the power comes from items. Depending on how far into the game that event would happen it could also not do much.
Not a problem if dev play test their games.

I think he was moreso referring to the secret main villain being some random NPC you saw once once one scene 50 hours ago that smirked a bit oddly and said "oh?" when you mention the Power Shards of Light near him, who you then never see again until the end of the game, not a villain that randomly appears out of nowhere. At least that trap sounds reasonably dangerous. Some games have random enemies ambush you and it's the same shit you've been fending off the entire game. Half Life was the worst. They should just shoot you in the head afterward instead of leaving you in an easily escapable trap because I'm done playing that shit either way

Like I can kind of understand the "Oh, we thought it was just a legend." thing to a point. But if Blularg the Rape Demon actually killed millions and turned an entire city into a crater, you'd think some historians would make sure to remind everyone to keep track of that seal.

Most writings get eventually lost or are only preserved in fragments. Also ancient tenets get reintrpeted, recompiled and retranslated, so the meaning can get lost or misinterpreted.
>>
>>737418837
That's not what happens at all
Necron isn't "evil god", he's Death
FF9 was always meant to have "Death" as the final villain. This is even more obvious when you find out that Hades was the initial final boss of the game, but was changed to Necron in development. You can still fight Hades in the final dungeon.
The game's central theme is all about death. Dying, moving on from death, accepting your death, accepting someone elses death, etc. Of course death is the final boss. It was never going to be anything else.
You can dislike it, that's fine, but calling him literally who just shows you're illiterate and didn't pick up on any of the games themes (and he does elaborate btw)

The sequel did a lot to redeem Ilias just by showing the losing side of the war in heaven. They managed to avoid being shown in the first game by virtue of being the sealed ancient evil that Ilias didn't want to set free just yet. In the sequel they're out and not only are they significantly more evil, they're also incompetent hypocrites who smugly go "all according to plan" as things fall apart around them.
>>
>>737423564
You're never going to avoid every trope, and these things become common enough to be tropes for a reason.
You're better off trying to understand why these things make people irritated than just trying to avoid them at all.

The real stinker is how games/stories present the fact and the implication that fate is already known, the future is already written.
In more authentic world people would treat you like a complete madman if you thought about yourself as some sort of hero, chosen by the gods.
This is this how stories are written in books for little children, only evil people lie, evil people cannot do good things. Black and white, no nuance. In the end you want to get immersed into the experience, once suspension of disbelief stops working you stop giving a fuck.
>>
>>737424404
I'd add that this is also because fantasy stories usually have more definitive sources of authority. Modern culture is also used to scam artists who hide behind vague spirituality.
For "realistic" chosen one stories, there would be a lot of doubters and frauds.

True, because of how interpretations of the story change over time. The culture from which the work originate create an imprint. Common fears, hopes or questions, of the author create themes.
Many of those don't simply exist anymore.
In the end you mostly remember interactions between characters, sometimes mundane on the surface but they will resonate with you somehow.
In the most basic form the hero is someone who takes altruism to the extreme, in modern society it would be considered at least stupid.
A lot of people would take advantage of a person like that to their own ends.
Rarely games show once naive bright eyed hero turned into cynical disillusioned one, because of all the malevolence he experienced along the way.

>Inquisitors exist that hunt them
>They're just regular men and women from the church who have volunteered to fight them
>The Inquisitors are LE BAD btw
Why can't any depiction of the church be positive? They literally have the most dangerous job and the most noble goal in the world, yet because they're religious and are associated with "inquisitors" they have to be bad
>>

I remember playing some low budget anime game where humans and demons are trying to have a truce, and there is a big church run by a pope who HATES demons and wants to KILL all of them.
However, every faction is depicted as reasonable (for the most part), and even the pope is treated as a tragic figure who genuinely wants to help people.
She's also one of the romance options and has huge boobs, but that's irrelevant.

God I hate this shit. I hate when it happens to protags, too. Like there's some NEW threat(tm) that MUST be 1000% more powerful than the last one and it's so good it instakills the old protags. Or when it's some NEW good guy(tm) that's 10000% cooler than stinky old protags and he just bails them out for free like 3 times and then takes over completely because he's just THAT cool.
Fucking kindergarten level writing.

Far Cry always has some insane ludonarrative nonsense. Like every game you slaughter a dozen guys on the way to pick up a coffee, then a cutscene hits where you black out and wake up to find that you killed a handful of baddies and the MC goes like "I am... such a monster..."
>>
>>737420960
The funny thing is that the very first Dragon Quest game did this, but with the distinction that the Dragonlord had basically already won. The world was conquered, and the only things that could defeat him (the Orb of Light and Erdrick's Sword) were in his direct possession. As far as he knew, he didn't NEED to do anything but sit in his throne room all day. Modern demon lords swan about like they won already after conquering a single city.

You can't have it both ways. You can't set it up as the ultimate threat while also letting us fight it and seeing that it's not so bad. If I can beat the ultimate weapon, but struggle against 4 grunts at th same time, then that means 5 grunts probably have a pretty good chance against the boss also

A world with wizards that is constantly at war would weaponize magic often and steadily in a big arms race.
Every nation would have state necromancers and sorcerers.
Knights and Paladins would be embedded with enough runes and protections to never pass a single anti-doping test.
Muskets and other long range weaponry would had been easily invented even if initially they were wands with a a single use fireball in them, hell, pirates used to carry seven pistols with them because they could only fire each once.

Imagine the state of absolute paranoia since every message could contain a brainwash curse or a death spell. Picture the Infinitely wacky forms of warfare magic enables.

The stupid thing is noncombatant villains are a solved problem and have been for decades. If the villain's skillset isn't fighting directly, obviously just have them fight indirectly. Nobody thinks Wily or Robotnik can't be final bosses because they can't fistfight or shrug off bullets. Once there's nothing between you and them, the game is over. That's how you fight a physically weak villain, you trash his shit and chase him down.

The trick is they need to react accordingly. There's no reason to make them smug when you reach them because they literally already lost. Even dumb scrimblo Rocket: Robot on Wheels figured this shit out. It didn't know how to do bosses but the villain starts trying to cut an increasingly generous deal as you progress through the final level which makes it way more satisfying than it would be otherwise

Because some people self insert as the villian not because he is "evil" because he is a victim who tends to get revenge or hold power over others. So its the ultimate power fantasy for some people, that is why some people side or even love the vilian because they see a part of themself in them. So when a villain has a tragic backstory that justify all his shitty fucked up behavior its like crack to these types of people. The key to all of this is if the villain had a tragic backstory. If he was evil dickhead to begin with its harder to justify his actions but if the villain is a victim then its okay to be on his "side" in the moral dilemma question. That is why these type of people hate "evil guy is evil" villains because they don't want to see themselves as evil or morally in the wrong but justified. Because it might remind them all they times that they have hurt other people and don't want to be the "bad guy"

This is armchair psychology but I think people forget that humans treat fantasy stories as real events in their head. In fact we are doing it now.

It’s gotten so bad that a story played completely straight is now considered the new “subversive”.

There's a reason they had a whole issue with subway rape when theoretically you could just go "woah hey this pervert is grabbing me!" and get some help and attention on a crowded train.

That's pretty stupid if you anon. You didn't need to personally have her as a favorite, the shock and despair is that a desperate father would do such a thing to an innocent little girl and dog, each his own and loved. She believed in her dad and instead she gets her life ripped away from her to live as a freak, not even fully understanding what's wrong. You also find out he did the same to his deceased wife, you aren't meant to value her as a character either, just understand that what transpired was fucked up.

Borderlands 2 but I'm sure others have done it. Also if we're all on the same side anyway why wait to give me something helpful? Is it mystically bound by dramatic timing?

>Like I can kind of understand the "Oh, we thought it was just a legend." thing to a point. But if Blularg the Rape Demon actually killed millions and turned an entire city into a crater, you'd think some historians would make sure to remind everyone to keep track of that seal.
Idunno man we got flat earthers and moon deniers. I think if we had a contained ancient evil people would eventually say it's made up bullshit. It'd be like that cheesy horror movie trope of "oh come on, there's no way this Infernal Blood Dagger will *actually* open the rape dimension if it draws blood from a virgin, let's try it haha"

Whenever you or a party member gets captured in a cutscene by a mook or group of mooks they could easily beat in regular gameplay.

He shows up several times in the main plot, explaining Aer Krene, the Entelexeia, the Adephagod and even lends Yuri his sword for a while as early as part 1. He's a central figure and on a journey much like Yuri is to try and solve the same issues but comes to a more extreme solution.

it's an easy plot device to justify characters loredumping the MC and having him gradually learn about the world with the reader in tow.
same shit with isekai.
it's a sign that you're most likely dealing with a terrible writer.

This is an interesting point though. Ass Creed doesn't need to lore dump because it takes place on earth and every player knows where Rome is. In a book, you just sort of follow along and it's not a big deal, you'll learn in time. In a game though, the player has to act. They can't just follow a MC who *does* have the knowledge... So how do you teach a player about a very different kind of setting without lore dumping enough info for them to make decisions? They have to understand what they're deciding, and often quickly, but that means a lore dump and those aren't very natural feeling.

Sorta just an interesting question.

What games do this well with settings that are very different from the real world?
