what do people think of basic hdr 400? my whites are always too bright and look shit so i turned it off on my tv

Just got a mini led tv, it's pretty good, can barely notice any backlight on the blacks around light stuff and don't have to worry about burn in

I bought a cheap but top end mini led from Costco on sale a few years ago and about a year ago I upgraded my pc to a hdmi 2.1 gpu and bought a long ass hdmi cable and play at 4k 144hz on the tv. HDR on tv is incredible with crazy brightness over 2000 nits and stuff. It made me then want to buy a monitor with HDR and I did but monitor HDR tech fucking sucks right now. Dont buy a HDR monitor just buy a tv.

I've had an HDR OLED for years now and I still don't know what settings to enter sometimes. I've also never been happy with how it looks when it comes to movies and TV either. When the stars align you'll get the best looking image you've ever seen in your life, most of the time though it's underwhelming or looks worse than it does without it. The set up and implementation desperately needs to be automated and unified.

I'm pretty sure burn in has largely been solved by now. It definitely used to be a problem basically all my OLED devices that were made before 2019 or so got burn in, but it hasn't happened to me with anything newer.

I got like the best VA monitor from last year with 2000 nits HDR performence and 1152 dimming zones, blacks are almost OLED deep but when present next to bright elements you can see the haloing, subtitles in particular can cause bad haloing. That's simply the trade-off right now - amazing brightnes and deep blacks but with blooming versus precise perfect blacks with a dimmer to much dimmer image that you get from OLEDs.

what's blooming and how is it different from the natural "bloom" that happens in any panel (including OLED) when there's bright white against a black background?

Modern day full array local dimming TVs are like 98% as good as OLED when it comes to black levels and while blooming may never fully go away till micro LED becomes mainstream, the tech is at a point where there are no longer trade offs between better picture quality and blooming. For example the upcoming RGB LED TVs use RGB backlighting so even if hypothetically a small star is smaller than the zone that needs to illuminate it, if the star is like red or something for example, the blooming will also be of a red hue rather than a white glow. So better picture quality actually comes with the complement of less noticeable blooming.
