I am wanting to get into the genre. Which one should I play? The original janky XCOM but with soulful designs or Xenonauts with qol features bug ugly woke looking designs?
Original Xcom, of course. There are lots of mods to make it less janky thanks to OpenXcom. I'm sure you can find something cool. I haven't actually played Xenonauts.
>>737414167There's zero reason to play any vanilla Xcom game when X-Piratez exists. It fixes all of vanilla Xcom's problems.
>>737414438Don't like the setting.
>>737414438>X-PiratezWTF did I just Google?
Either XCOM 2 or XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Any other answer is factually incorrect, unless you specifically want DOS-tier gaming jank. And if you do there are better DOS games to play. Not many but some.

>>737414167The original XCOM is hard to get into, because many of its design elements are very cryptic. But it's a great game, once you get the hang of it. The end game can be a slog, though. Also, the research tree is completely busted and once you know the meta, the game is too easy even on Superhuman. If you want to play it, then get OpenXcom, since it fixes many of the bugs and provides QOL options. Also, read the instruction manual. It won't give you good tactics or strategies, but it will explain how to play the game. Can't comment on Xenonauts, since I've never played it. If by wanting to get into the genre you mean getting into XCOM-like games, not games that are specifically very very similar to Ufo Defense (like e.g. Terror From the Deep and supposedly Xenonauts), then the Firaxis XCOM games are probably a better place to start. You can play vanilla Enemy Unknown blind on Ironman and it's very well designed to make that a good experience.

>>737414706>>737414757>>737414549What level of autism do you have to have to spend 100s of hours making a mod for a 32 year old game that only 1000 people will play at most?
>>737414713Does Open XCOM fix the balance?
>>737414891Polish autism, IIRC.
>>737414167OG xcom , Terror from the Deep (xcom2) , Xcom Apocalypse , everything else afterwards is not canon.
>>737414891It isn't autism, it is just basic familiarity. people in tech do this a lot.
>>737414981No, it only fixes the bugs and provides QOL options you can toggle on or off in the settings. It also provides a convenient platform for mods. The game isn't badly balanced, it's just that it provides you with a ton of different options and many of those options are either useless or have better alternatives. And certain crucial points on the progression path require doing very specific things. But it's a part of this game's charm to "trial and error" until you settle on things that work. If you get too frustrated or get stuck, then with this game it's not a crime to look it up, considering just how cryptic it can be at times.
>>737414167Play xcom without mods, is not as janky as it looks once you understand how it works and is the only game where smoke grenades are useful and shots are something physical. What I mean is that the projectile interact with the world as if it was a real shot, you shoot at someone behind cover and it doesn't have less change to hit him, it has a change to hit the cover, the shot miss? It may hit something behind alien, you can shoot in the dark too, so you can have a pointer and a sniper on the other side of the big map can land a hit even if the sniper can't see the alien. Is a legit good game. Mods are also hard as ball or make the game 6 times longer so they aren't the best starting point. In any case, use open xcom because that still fix some bugs and has some QoL.
>>737414506Rosigma is also fun.
Its frankly embarassing that Xenonauts looks much worse (especially its UI) than games released 30 years ago, to be fair most modern indie games have a terrible presentation>>737414549Greatness
>>737414576There are no better games made for DOS than the OG Xcom, none, System Shock 1 comes close but no other.
>>737416362anon, i wanna say AAA games have wors UI/UX than games released 30 years ago, but quite frankly fucking EVERYTHING has worse UI/UX nowadays. often by design.
>>737414891i didn't realize mods needed mainstream consentgo back to minecraft
>>737416443Star control 2
Xenonauts 2 and Phoenix Point are the best i played so far
>>737414891you are the gayest faggot on this site right now
>>737419407Thanks
>>737414167Sounds like you're already made your decision. Why even bother asking?
>>737414981The fundamental problem with XCOM is the ability to act on enemies beyond line of sight:>psionics>blaster launchers>scout/sniper tacticsIf you do it right this lets you win without giving the aliens a chance to act. Psionics should require LOS to function. Blaster launchers should be upgraded rocket launchers with no pathing option. Firing beyond LOS should give a huge accuracy penalty and alert the target to your position. Maybe some of these can be fixed with mods. If you can fix all three then the balance wouldn't be so bad. There's still some smaller problems:>hyperwave decoder breaks the detection game and is far too easy to access>dedicated manufacturing bases break the economy (this would be easily fixed by making it unprofitable)>stat training applies per action, encouraging tedious grinding (would be better as random upgrades once per month for every soldier who saw action)
>>737414167Original UFO and TFTD with OCXE. Then X-Piratez or X-Com Files.
>>737421009Also:>fighting night missions is always a misplayThis is especially disappointing because night missions are the most exciting ones.
og xcom is better. just get openxcom
>>737414167Absolutely start with the original XCOM UFO defense. You'll always remember your first terror mission.
