>How GTA San Andreas Pushed the PS2 Beyond Its Limits

Is it really a technical marvel when they did it by making it look like absolute fucking shit?
>>
>>737417987
That is not CJ's topology. WHY YOU LIE?!
>>
>>737417987
I get you want to shit on the YouTuber's talking point, but by not linking it, now I have to research the video.
>making it look like absolute fucking shit
How so? Keep in mind we are talking about PS2, not the Xbox/PC ports which were gimped by comparison due to limited shader utilization.

kids on nu vee literally have not a single idea how any ascpect of a video game is made.
>>
>>737417987
San andreas has the biggest and most open world of all ps2 / og Xbox games doe

Yeah but you also can't really go inside many buildings in San Andreas. Compare that to Morrowind where basically every door has an interior you can go into.
>>
>>737418548
>Yeah but you also can't really go inside many buildings in San Andreas

Honestly we should go back to this. The part that sucked was the loading times, but we're all on SSDs now. What's the problem?
>>
The whole reason GTA got popular in the first place is because Rockstar was like a generation ahead of the competition in terms of tech, people take open world games for granted now but back on the PS2 it was borderline impossible to pull that shit off, most devs literally did not have the technical skill to do it
>>
>>737417987
I'm also amazed GTAV ran decently on the PS3, if at all.
>>

>Yeah but you also can't really go inside many buildings in San Andreas. Compare that to Morrowind where basically every door has an interior you can go into.

Morrowind was a PC game and an absolutely miserable experience on the original Xbox, the loading times were insanely long because the literally had to reboot the entire console just to free up memory. GTASA not only ran on the vastly weaker PS2 but it also ran way better.
>>
So weird seeing zoomers talk about some average game from the past like it's some sort of ancient artefact left behind by a more advanced species but I guess it makes sense since you're all braindead
>>
>>737418779
Yeah, to me GTA5 on PS3/360 IS the technical marvel pushing game. San Andreas looks damn ugly (if I guess maybe stylized) but it's continuing off some already damn ugly games like 3 and VC.
>>
>>737418632
GTA 6 is going to have lots of unique interiors supposedly

Shenmue 1 and especially 2 are far more impressive 6th gen games and ran on debatably weaker hardware. Far better and more detailed graphics, 800+ unique NPCs that are fully voiced with thousands of lines of spoken dialogue, in Shenmue 2 you can go inside almost every single store and building and there are even apartment buildings with a hundred rooms each and you can go inside all of them purely for immersion, I could go on. All of this in 1999 and 2001. Sure it's not a seamless open world, the maps are divided by loading screens, but any given area is several times more detailed and impressive than anything GTA or pretty much any other game did that gen.

Theres still nothing like shenmue which is crazy because it should be easy enough to do something like it with todays technology. Not even Shenmue 3 properly recaptured it.

GTA 5 was a really good looking game for 360/PS3 - personally preferred how it looked on PS3 over 360.
>>
>>737417987
This was a popular vidya topic back in the day in 2004/5.
I remember my older brother and his friends discussing this.
Same topics 20+years later, isn't it funny?
>>
>>737419303
That does sound impressive. I think the major selling point of GTA:SA is how much was improved over GTA 3 over such short time, and it's hard to believe they're both on the same console.
>>
GTA SA is objectively an ugly as fuck, sub 20FPS boring open world game. People played it as toddlers and think it's a masterpiece, but in reality it's just not a very good game. It also has atrocious sound quality and zero atmosphere.
>>
>>737419303
Shenmue is a glorified point and click adventure game, while GTA are action games.
I will bet my left nut you haven't played any of these titles you're yapping about.
>>
>>737417987
Still didn't get the point of the turn wars mode, or there wasn't any to begin with.
>>
>>737420615
It's less actiony but it has fights with a real good combat system.

no the fuck bruh they fucking werent, gta games always looked like fucking dogshit until GTA 5
>>
>>737420738
which all happen in an isolated level/space, removed from the actual overworld. In GTA it's all pure sandbox that takes place on "one" big map.
>>
>>737420738
Shenmue barely has any combat and it's so sparse that you can't even really fuck around with your options (which often leads to just trying to mash through the fights and it feeling boring).
>>
>>737417987
GTA V on PS3 seems more impossible tbqh

GTAV mogging IV on the ps3 in terms of both visuals and performance was more impressive tbqh.
San Andreas was too foggy and ugly, fun game tho.

On that tangent, people throw a lot of shade on Bethesda today but them getting Morrowind to work on Xbox without shitting itself was a technical marvel all on its own. It's just, while Rockstar continued to innovate Beth stagnated after the creation engine's release. Compare how well GTA:V fit onto the PS4 to how Skyrim eventually corrupts you saves if you play too much.
>>
>>737422146
Rockstar games are always well optimized. It is the reason GTA 6 will do well, despite the quirky/faggy writing.
>>
>>737418632
>>Honestly we should go back to this
GTAV did this and its map was awful. A large part of that was that interiors were almost entirely gone, and the few that were left have nothing to do in them.
>>
>>737422813
b-but in skyrim corpses don't despawn and items stay where i put them... i love having the framerate shit itself and saves get corrupted so that i can put apples anywhere and they'll stay there its so innovative... no other open world game does it bro...
>>
if you compare GTA 3 to GTA SA, its honestly fucking amazing.
>>
GTA 3 and Vice City had short loading screens between sections of the map, San Andreas was completely seamless while being bigger than both combined.
>>
>>737419303
Yeah but shenmue is boring as fuck. That's the important bit, people actually also like playing GTA
>>
>>737418779
decently? it ran at like 22fps with drops.
>>
People who glaze GTA: SA sound like this guy debating Jack Thompson. In this case Tony was right
https://youtu.be/pEYufivO7ZU
>>
>>737424094
the average ps3 game ran at 15 with drops, you took what you could with that piece of shit
>>
>>737422021
He's right about it being ugly and having terrible sound. That was always true
