The game also now hands out a pretty sizable amount of gems for free from the book, the reactions tutorial, various domains, etc; none of which were available at launch. It's not going to get you that final ascension but it's enough to deal with a handful of characters who get ascension materials from a dual gem boss without needing to grind excessively.
